If you could only have one lens...

For the 10D, which one lens would you pick for general, all around
use?
altho' I find I use my 15-30 or 20mm even more. However, if I could only have one, the 24-70L would be it. I started out with a Sigma 24-70 EX at one time, bought the 24-70L shortly after it was released and it is my most useful lens all round I guess. Since the 15-30 was really 'it' for wide zooms for the D60 when I bought it, I'm not sure what lens I would buy now for WA--and if it would more likely be my most useful lens (as the 17-40 or 16-35). Regardless, the 15-30 is probably my second choice for 'one' lens for my style--and my commercial work.

Everyone here will laugh at me, because this isn't an "L" lens, but you asked about "general, all around use". This is all I use for this purpose with my D-60. Upside -- lots of focal length range and fast to zoom. Downside, slow lens (f/3.5 - 5.6) makes it less helpful in lowlight; however, I almost always hand hold it, and shoot any almost any lighting situation. If the lens is too slow, I bump up the ISO. I've gotten great shots that have been enlarged to as much as 20 x 30. Other up side, way cheaper than an "L" lens.

Except it hasn't been built :o). I think you meant either the
17-40 f4L or 16-35 f2.8L
Oops. Of course I was referring to new Canon lens that I know because of my reliable source ;)

Actually I meant to write 17-35/2.8L. :)

But most likely would stick to some prime lens between 20 and 28mm.

I have the 28-135 IS , it is great, I also have the 100-300 IS and it is at best ok, after looking at Eastwoods examples with his 30-350 non-IS I was convinced on the L front, but this lens was not avialble until recently so I guess I will just have to save my pennies!

Of course if I could have a 50-500 Canon L IS that is a different deal especially if I could also shoot in the manual macro as well!

Your eyes can capture the soul, the camera just an image.

You could also consider a sigma 24-60 or 24-70 or a tamron 28-75, if you need to be budgety, they are not the 24-70, but they are cheaper.

Rather get a few lenses instead of only one... it's kind of one of the points in paying big money for a camera with an interchangeable lens-mount...

Been very happy with my Tamron SP24-135 for general photography. FOV equivalent to a 38-216mm lens on a 35mm (full frame) camera.

On the 10D I love the way 24mm lenses work. A little wider than "normal" but not enough to be obviously wide. This one focal length could easily cover 90%+ of my needs. I'd choose either the Canon 24mm f/1.4, which I own, or the Sigma f/1.8. The Sigma's close-focusing capability (18cm) is lots of fun. The Canon is a little crisper at f/2 than my friend's Sigma but at smaller apertures it's dead even.

then my 70-300mm IS and finally my 35mm f2.

just based on my use of them of course :)

For the 10D, which one lens would you pick for general, all around

This question comes up every now and then, and I don't think it has a valid answer for me. With one lens only I'd more or less quit photography, it would be too limiting. If I really had to I might keep the 100-400 and concentrate on nature photography as I enjoy this the most, but luckily it is only a hypothetical.

Most likely though I'd get a P&S that fits in my shirt pocket and sell the 10D, why lug around such a big camera when it is limited to one lens? It's more a choice between as small as possible or as competent as possible for me.

Actually I'm not sure I get the concept of "general, all-round photography". Maybe it means holiday snaps, pictures of your kids and pets etc... I don't do much of that. Most subjects I want to shoot have specific needs for lens choice, there's no one lens to cover everything well.

If you're asking because you want help picking a lens for yourself, only you know what type of photography you want to do. People often seem to answer 17-40, 24-70, 50, 35, 28-135... something in the "normal" range.

I agree, I use my 10D with a variety of lenses. I couldn't shoot with just one lens, I need the focal range of multiple with the speed (aperture-wise) you can't get in a 28-200 or so.

The one I would possibly keep if I really, really had to would be my 24-70L I think, but it could be my 17-35L too..

Thanks to all who answered this question. It's been a very interesting thread for me, and I hope others, to see the variations of lens' and comments. By no means was I implying only one lens for the 10D would be enough, but mearly asking for those, who like myself, who get the 10D at first, with no other previous lens', need to get a lens to start and in the case when you need to have one lens as a general walk around. Thanks for all your seasoned answers as this is what the forum is all about to me -helping and learning from others.

Have a great Sunday, and to all you fathers out there, Happy Fathers Day!

For the money, this is a great lense... Sharp ,accurate and quiet...

I have to agree. I just bought a 28-135 IS and I'm not 100% happy with it. The IS is great, but it's a slow lens and gets even slower as you employ the zoom. It's by no means a bad lens, but had I to do over again, I would have spent the extra cash and went with a faster lens

I was always taught that you should never use a zoom that was more than a 3x, short to long. I should have listened to that old photography teacher.

Gary, GREAT shots of the baptist church and the panda.

Please feel free to criticize, make suggestions, and edit my photos. But, if you don't mind, please be courteous and not pass off my photos as your own (or anyone else's!).

Currently, pretty much any photo I post will be with the Canon 300D and 35mm f 1.4L lens, but on occasion I may post from other cameras and lenses.
