CF card problem? Can you read your card in a PC? Try to format it in the PC. I've seen XXX once too when I had a problem with my 4GB microdrive.

Find someone with Windows XP and a card reader and format the card FAT (FAT16) NOT FAT32.

If I put a FAT32 card in my 7HI I get exactly the same thing - the camera can't even re-format it. Need to use a PC.

True - but only if the card (or microdrive) is less than 2GB. If bigger it must be formatted FAT32 otherwise the A2 will not read it. I speak from experience here... I wanted to use a 4GB microdrive in the A2, and in a Sigma SD9. The Sigma works only with FAT16 - including the "unofficial" 64k sector size XP puts on a 4GB disk. The A2 will not read this format at all, but works just fine with FAT32. So I have to reformat the microdrive between FAT16/FAT32 on the PC if I want to move from one camera to the other. Some of these FAT issues are not as clear-cut as you might think.

Rado, I suggest you buy a card reader for your PC, they're not expensive and a can be very useful if you have problems of this sort.

I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago on my 7i. The camera wouldn't read the card or format it, so I formatted it in xp which didn't help, xp would read and write to the card but it still wouldn't work in the camera.

Anyway I got it sorted by taking it into a camera shop and they formatted it in a Nikon coolpix(can't remember the model) and now it works fine. I read about doing this somewhere on the internet and it turns out that xp wiped some sort of file that the camera needs. Most camera's will add this file when formatting but the 7i doesn't, this could be different on the A2 though.

I am no expert on these things but this was my experience and thought it might help.

Hi Rado,

if formatting doesn't help: try to rebuild the partition table. I already had the problem that formatting didn't help because the partition table was invalid (strange: a Sony F828 could use the card, but the Minolta seems to be more sensitive). I did the job with Linux, but Windows' fdisk should be able to do the job too - you only have to pay attention, not to modify the pc's table ;-)

BTW, I'm not surprised, that 7Hi doesn't understand FAT32. If I remember right, the camera is older than 2GB+ cards.

Cheers & good luck
Andreas

^bump.

Ok, I yesterday I had the same issue. I took my A2 for at least 30 minutes of shooting in a bright hot day when I visited a safari park in Bahrain. The camera (especially the handgrip) got warmer for this kind of temperature (this heat happened twice). Sometimes I turned it off to cool down for a while.

Just before leaving the park for a couple of last shots, the LCD displayed red XXX in the bottom right corner and couldn't take a pic. I chose playback mode and it displayed "Unable to use the card". FYI, I was using Hitachi Microdrive 4GB. I turned off the cam and went home.

After about an hour while on the way to home, I turned on again the cam and it WORKS normally as before.

In my conclusion, apparently this problem occurs due to the heat of extended usage, moreover when the temperature is quite high. It was at least 40 degree Celcius here in Bahrain... it's always hot... just ask our friend below... ;)
