I'm curious which photo of fishermen in the fog that I made yesterday that people prefer.

The first picture is pretty much what came out of my Olympus C-2100UZ, except I cropped it down to 800x600 (from 1600x1200):

The second picture, I did not crop some of background clutter out, but I applied ImageMagick's normalize action, which uses a histogram to punch up the colors, and is sometimes useful to make a picture pop (though often I find it does the oppisite, and I prefer the natural photo from the UZI), and then converted it to web size:

My vote is for the second, as well.

smoother tone. almost painterly. great quality to the light. A great shot!

second has too many post process artifacts - & too many (distracting?) visual elements - just lacks the punch of the top shot.

my 2 pesos...

You've got your UZi workin'!

The first one, it looks so real and I love it.
The second one just looks like it was made over and not a real image.

Again that first one is a real dandy, I like it very much, the colors are so smooth and very good.

...but I like the unprocessed look of the first one. It would be nice to see the 2nd one unprocessed, and as Lucy said earlier, with some of the bottom cropped.

Either way, both are excellent images!

only one and for me it's shot 1.

You have done a great job considering the conditions, it is a very atmospheric photograph.

The 2nd looks somewhat artificial by comparison.

Hi Michael,

I really prefer the first shot here. It's simpler, no visual distractions, and the low contrast suits the foggy scene very well. Your second pic exhibits too much contrast for such a foggy scene, and just doesn't look quite right to me. It also is a bit too cool (blue) for my tastes- I think the more neutral greys of the first shot are more natural.

Kind Regards,
Brian

I must admit that the cropped but un-normalized picture is more true to life, but even so, there is something about the un-naturalness of the processed one that reminds me of an oil painting (sort of around the time of Van Gogh), which is why I kept it. However, it is nice in small doses, I tend to be more in the realistic school.

Any way, there were some requests for the large and originals. I have uploaded them to my tmp directory.

Here is the full size version (1200x1600) of the processed picture: http://www.the-meissners.org/tmp/fishermen/pict1-large.jpg

Here is the original (1200x1600) version: http://www.the-meissners.org/tmp/fishermen/pict1-orig.jpg

Here is a 800x600 crop of that picture without the normalization: http://www.the-meissners.org/tmp/fishermen/pict1-mod1.jpg

Here is the same crop with the normalization: http://www.the-meissners.org/tmp/fishermen/pict1-mod2.jpg

Here is the original version (1600x1200) of the cropped picture: http://www.the-meissners.org/tmp/fishermen/pict2-orig.jpg

I got to agree ... way overprocessed....he now has links to the originals...the second one uprocessed and cropped diferently would make a great picture
Bob
Bob,

I made my choice before reading Michael's comments about the two
pictures. I just think the second picture looks to be
overprocessed.

Cheers
Steve
