EOS-1D Mark II sharp, no worries here

Nice collection of images there JM PHOTO. I'm very impressed by the colour renditions captured by the 1D MkII. Further more I love the very natural (film like) background blur in the out of focus areas. This appears much more pleasing to the effect that I usually get on my 10D even with the L series lenses I have - 200f/1.8, 70-200f/2.8 & 17-40f/4. Looking forward to getting some hands on testing soon......

Having just started to evaluate the Mark II I'm surprised to read
questions over this camera's sharpness.. There are a few important
points to remember:

1. The image processing for the 1D series apperas to be different
(to a higher standard) than other EOS digitals, tonal transitions
are smoother, sharpening artifacts virtually non-existant.

2. An eight megapixel sensor is going to pick out any sharpness /
resolution issues with the lens and focusing. A good lens,
accurately focused and with the correct DOF is needed for 1:1 pixel
sharpness.

3. This is the most important point - The default sharpening on
the EOS-1D Mark II is a very conservative level 0 (zero), this is
the same as the EOS-1D and 1Ds. It's a much lower sharpening level
than most other digital SLR's and provides you with noise free and
sharpening artifact free images. HOWEVER if you prefer your images
sharper out of the camera just increase sharpening to around level
2.

I went out on my first shoot with the camera the other day and
before even starting created a parameter set with sharpening level
'2', I'm pretty pleased with the results.

The images below are 100% crops from some 1D Mark II JPEG images.
Lens used was the EF 28-70 mm F2.8 L.

PS. Please don't ask me when the review will be posted.

Phil, I have absolutely no issues with sharpness of my 1D MKII. Since Fed Ex fouled up my delivery today and after chasing the driver down on route and then having no time to even set the camera sharpness and other settings that I normally use, I was able to get Sharp images with the 1DMK II with literly less than 5 mins out of the box. I only think it will get better as I tweak the camera to my tastes. As far as processing of the images goes, I did not find it that much different than what I normally do with my Canon 1D. I agree with you that the quality of glass you use with the 1D MKII will make a significant difference.

I chased my UPS driver down in August of 2002 when I was waiting for my Epson 2200 delivery. She knocked on the door and took off so fast...I threw on my shoes and hoped in the car and chased her down and made her come back! :-)

I think I was referring to the 'look' of the images, in that there
are almost no sharpening artifacts and textures a clean and smooth
yet detailed.
I remember looking at a crop from a motorcycle, full of detail with ZERO noise. It was the first digital capture I'd seen like that. I'm glad this is still important.

Oh, you do not know the half of it. When the Fed Ex driver did not show at the time I am used to, I called in to try to get an idea of when he would be coming. I was told we cannot get a hold of the driver in the truck. This is an absolute lie!!! Let me say that again, This is an Absolute lie!

So I requested they call the Fed Ex center in my area and have someone call me from there. It was about 12:30 and two hours had gone by, and I did not receive a call back. So I called back on the toll free number and asked why I had not been called back. When they looked up my tracking number they told me that their records and computer indicated that my camera had been delivered at 10:05am and left on the front porch! So why I had them on the phone, I walked out and checked my front porch and no camera! I told the Fed Ex representative that I was on the phone with and they put me on hold and called the local center. In the mean time I walked outside to see if my camera had been left at one of my neighbor's homes by mistake. Again no package! Then Fed Ex tells me that the Camera had been delivered but to the wrong town! So the guy aon the phone asks me if this is the first time I was informed of the misdelivery? I could not believe this was happening! So then the Fed Ex guy tells me they are trying to reach the Fed Ex Driver in his Truck but the two way Radios are not working because the repeater is down. ( See above where I was told on the first call that Fed Ex said they could not reach the driver in the truck). Then the guy on the phone said that he tried to call the driver on his cell phone but the driver was not answering. Fed Ex gave me the drivers cell phone number and then asked me for a little time to try to reach the driver and I agreed. I hung up the phone and then used MapQuest to see if the address even existed in the town they told me the 1DMKII had been delivered in. Mapquest came up empty so I call the police dept in that town and explained what was happening and asked them about the address. The police dept said that the address did not exist in their town but suggested I call the county sherriff's dept because they would have a more complete listing of all the streets and addresses in the county. When I called the Sherriff's dept the only address they could come up with in the county was mine.

So I called Fed Ex back! I talked to the local agent again and suggested they look up this guys route because by their computer they can tell where he made his last delivery and his next pickup would be. So the local agent did that and called me back and told me he left a message for the guy to call in from his next stop which was about 15 miles from my house. After that I did not hear from Fed Ex for a few more hours. At about 3pm, I called back to the local center and asked to speak to the same agent I had spoken to but was informed that he had gone home. When I asked the woman on the phone why I did not get a call back when the driver called in her answer was, well as it turns out your camera is still on the truck and the driver scanned it and reported it delivered by mistake! The woman went on to tell me that the driver had overlooked my delivery and had left my area before he noticed what he had done, and that they had up to 5:30pm to deliver the package. After hearing this, I was not a happy camper and I explained to this woman that I had been waiting all day for delivery and her driver had fouled it up. She put me on hold and then came back on and said she reached the driver but he was in Decatur IL, which was at least 26miles from my house. I told her I was willing to meet the driver, so she talked to him and I was given permission to call him on his personal cell phone. When I talked to the driver he said he made a mistake but did not bother to appoligize for all the trouble. When I told him I would meet him, he agreed and I jumped in my car and drove to meet him. I finally caught up with him 45mins later and had the camera in my hands. I was supposed to shoot a soccer game that started at 4:30pm so I hurried to get to the highschool. When I finally go there, I had no time to set up the 1D MKII, so I just took it out of the box, slapped a battery in it, an SD card, a 4gig Hitachi microdrive, and a lens. I grabbed both it and my 1D and hit the field just in time to catch some of the game before it ended. Needless to say with all the stress of the day and the fact that I was basically shooting the 1D MK II straight out of the box without setting up the sharpness or other setting on the computer, I think the camera did quite well. I know its not my best work, but those who have said the camera is not sharp and has soft images are clueless in my opinion! The images are posted at the link below if anyone cares to look!

Melanie must be significantly more mellow than I in order to characterize your adventure into the world of FedEx a "fun tale."

Jason, I ached through your whole story -- perhaps that's because my 1D mkII is due on Thursday and I don't think my heart would survive what you went through.

I congratulate you on your perseverance and especially on the quality of the images produced on your first shoot with the mkII.
I really want to see the results when you get everything dialed in.

Well, it was fun because he got the camera..

FedEx, UPS, and the USPS all deliver my stuff to a similar street/house number one town over. So I can feel for him... but characterize it as fun...since he DID get it the day he was supposed to. Sometimes it's weeks for me... or never.

I've pretty much given up on ALL the carriers. If my shipment isn't overnite priority, I pretty much ask for it to be held @ local station for customer pickup. For Airborne/DHL I have to use THIER address as the Ship To: or they totally ignore the big red HOLD FOR WILL CALL on my boxes. They even lost it once going to thier own damn station.

"that package shows out on the truck for delivery."

"Yeah, and how the hell does it go out to YOU on a truck on a truck for delivery?"

"You know, that's a real good question".

"Yer joking with me, right? Put your manager on the phone".

Another benefit of ordering your MarkII from a local dealer. I knew thier FEDEX delivery hit around 3:PM, so I "coincidentally" happened to be getting off on thier I-95 exit when they called. (quite a coincidence considering I live 30 miles SOUTH, eh?)

Trust NOTHING to chance...

"Fun" my a* !

"Run-arounds" aren't on my list of humorous activities.

Way to keep after 'em, Jason!

Glad things worked out in the end. :-)

Hey Folks,

Just to tell you all, i piked up my eos 1d mk II and used it at a wedding shoot that afternoon, wot can i say canon have done an excellent job with the camera, beating the old 10D i used to work with. The images which came out of the camera where excellent and i ran a batch sarpening of all the images just to make them a little sharper. Skin tones are wonderful, and the TTL(flash) system works briliantly. In total i took about 600 images and the camera did'nt skip a beat! well done canon!
