What is the best way of blowing a D2H pic in PS

Lanczos kernel is great, but not for each and every file. That is
one of the reasons for providing choices, apart from the speed of
algorithm.
True. Irfanview actually supports Lanczos, B-Spline, Bell, Mitchell, Triangle and Hermite interpolation.

All algorithms vary in appropriateness for a given image and speed, but I only mentioned Lanczos because it was the one referenced by the original poster and, imho, the best resampling algorithrm offered by either package.

Qimage and Irfanview are both nice pieces of software, but a lot of people would rather spend their $50 somewhere else than on an upsizing package.

Does Irfanview have Lanczos pyramid, micro detail interpolation like Qimage (it's a stair stepping method using Lanczos instead of Bicubic)?

That's what I thought: 10% increase of the original, as usual.

Thanks!
I was looking for something funkier ...
By blowing, I obviously mean interpolate to get a larger file to
eventually print a 20X30 picture out of it.

Step by step please, how do you guys do it ...

I have this camera there are really 2 choices IMO, I tried doing it in NC4 and CS using Bicubic Smoother , the CS render was way more detailed , and it is a great way to accomplish this task , the other application is PhotoZoom

Open the image with final crop in TIFF

To to Image/Image size and select "percent" and step it up 110% a few times !!! Keeping the BiCubic as a choice. What is Smoother ? I use PS7.0.1

I'm not familiar with Lanczos pyramid. It does support Pyramid, if that's what you're referring to.

It doesn't support Lanczos 'stepping', though I would think you could do that manually.

Hi Yves,

From Ron Rezniks e-book, he says the following: "To Upsample using the stepped methog using Photoshop CS's new algorithms, menu select Image; Image Size, make sure Resample Image is checked, and set the unites to percent. Set either dimension to 110%, select the algorithm you prefer for this image (e.g. Bicubic Smoother or Bicubic Sharper), and hit OK. Repeat as often as necessary to achieve the size required."

I hope this will help,

Gordon

The PS 7.0 doesn't have smoother Bi-Cubic. I need to upgrade

Sorry Yves

get CS my friend and forget about the 110% stupidity LOL, a throwback to when algorhtims were not as sophisticated as they are now , in CS there are options in the image size dialog area , bicubic smoother for Uprezzing and bicubic sharper for downsampling images ,

CS is the must have upgrade , the shadow highlite tool is much superior to DEE in NC4 , I use NC for all my conversions and CS for final editing

Reznik is just Wrong here , this is a debunked "myth" and one day I hope it is finally laid to rest LOL

1 step Bi Cubic Smoother then sharpen and you are done

A test in professional photographer magazine proved that one step is better than several small steps in ps (proved with images), not sure with other softawre products though.

Qimage takes the guesswork out of interpolatiion. There are at 8 choices for interpolation! Your blow-ups are only limited by the capabilities of the printer but it will span several pages if you want. The program is quite easy to use for your final printing although the interface is a little quirky. It even has editing capabilities including D100 NEF files, but not D2H. Its sharpening algorithms are super for printing including a sharpness equalizer which is phenominal. Once you use the program, you will never print from photoshop again.
Best Regards,

David
