Hi

I'm now on my second RS-21 remote and it seems to do exactly the same as the first one - nothing.

I've set the channels, tried bulb and MLU and nothing, not a twitch. Did anyone else have these problems, or am I missing something out?

We tried the first unit on an SA-300 in the shop with no response from that either, so either I am consistently doing the same thing wrong or I have got 2 bad remote controllers.

Any help appreciated.

SD9 - one day I'll work it all out

Have you checked that the battery is fresh and is inserted properly? A few years ago I tested an IR remote using some software for a palm pilot PDA that could monitor the strenght of the IR signal. So if you wanted to check and make sure that the remote is actually sending IR signals, this is an option if you have an IR capable PDA and hunt around the web for the software. The SD9 and the IR remote need to be on the same channel as well (1, 2, or 3), and the SD9 has to be in 'remote ready' mode too. Have you read the manual? Hope some of this helps.

I'll try some new batteries, I'm pretty sure I've covered everything in the manual.

Cheers

If you have an IR-sensitive digicam you can test directly if the remote is sending IR. You should be able to see the IR as a black dot on the LCD-screen. I did that to check if my Epson 3000Z could take IR pictures. It could and now I can use the camera to see the strenght of my TV-remote.

By the way, speaking of RS-21 - I think someone mentioned in a thread that he used the remote from his videocamera to control his SDxx...could that be right?

Is that the Infra-red remote control?

If so why not try a cable release?(electric version).....If it is because you think the IR one has longer range then this is not necessarily so as if you make your own you can make the cable as lond as you like.

I made my own cable release from a panel switch with a 1cm square red button, mobile phone hands-free kit, a BNC conector rubber sleeve, a small section of radiator hose and the tip off a silicon sealant tube!....Total cost was £6.73, around £23 cheaper than the Sigma version!

I bought an RS11 (old stock) and the batteries were dead, I'd check that first - due to this, get the feeling that the thing is powered up all the time rather than activated when you press the button like most remotes.. I'll have to run a check on it using a milliammeter

The long distance cable realease is a good idea, and I might just knock one up. I bought one of the canon ones out of a bargain bin for £5 or £6 so I could just extend that.

I wanted the remote this week (my first one died in december and I have been waiting for Jessops to replace it since then, i forgot and so did they), as my Mum is staying and wanted a full family photo, including me.

It can be done using the 10 sec delay, but having a 3 year old and 2 dogs in the picture means if I move then there is a good chance thay they will too!

The batteries seem a good starting point but getting CR1220's over an Easter weekend is a bit of challenge.

Ian,

Have you told the camera to receive the IR signal? I may be making a big blunder here (don't have docs in my hands), but don't we have to enable the camera as well? Seems to me I had to fuss with this.

Also, I understand the need for the wirelesss to work. However, in a pinch, I'll just set the camera in 2 sec delay and take a pic, like a landscape. I have louped images and this seems to be ok as I don't detect camera shake from the mirror using this method. Just mentioning for the whatever. I use this routinely. But not for self portraits of course. Dogs, kids, acts of god... I could have a 100,000 second delay and it would matter in that case.
