>>> Challenge 12: Light - Voting Thread <<<

I suspect that the habit started because of the voting thread. It's quicker to make votes when can you see the photographer's name in the title of the thumbnail rather than having to open each one.

I also prefer to have the first impression from the thumbnail be without my name (FWIW).
Everyone has their own agenda when voting, and you are not alone in
having little time.
My votes are cast for the 5 photographs I like the best, and that
best fit the theme. I don't vote for obvious Photoshop
composites....others seem to love them. I also don't cast my votes
based on who's been around for a while/won a previous challenge vs
new entrants. It's the photo that counts. For me, it will always be
about the photo and not the photographer (or the camera, for that
matter).

Gayle :-)
you TOTALLY misunderstood / misread what I was saying about no name
on the image, etc.

Here's my point:

Voting is VERY time consuming. I happen not to have alot of this
right now
(time)

I have spent a great deal of TIME, looking at all the images and
their rep image thumbs for day, commenting on MANY of the images!

Now it was time for voting.... and I didn't have a lot of time on
my hands....
so I focused my attention on the images that I liked that HAD the
artist name readily handy / available / under the thumb image,
where it SHOULD be.

This did NOT mean I didn't vote for someone I didn't "know". In
fact I was making an effort to vote for someone NEW who's image I
liked......

everybody deserves a chance

Ok? I hope I cleared THAT mistaken meaning up for everyone!

Markjay
The comment you left in the exhibition gallery voting booth has me
wondering. Why did photos without the photographers name on the
thumbnail NOT capture your attention? Are you casting a vote for
the photo or the photographer?

I never put my name on the thumbnail......I want my photos to stand
on their own merits. Does that mean that you never consider my
photos when you are voting? Do you even look at them?

I am interested to know....I am sure that the other photographers
who don't add their name to the thumbnail are also interested to
know why their photos didn't capture your attention too. Some of
them are superb.

I'm assuming the error shows up in the bottom left of the browser status bar and you need to double click it to see the details.

About the object expected part: is there any more? Or does it just say that? It's odd that the rest of the form works but only this part doesn't.

Try once more to vote normally.

Now that we are using the booth (the Jury is still out on this, I know, though I'm aware it makes the job a lot easier for the host) is everyone still fully reviewing the galleries before voting, or are you using only the booth thumbnails?

I only ask because there are some images (one of which may, or may not be one of mine!) that look so different at fullsize to the thumnail - hidden depths or features that may turn an apparently ordinary image into a really quite striking one.

It's very difficult when there are so many images to review, but I'm concerned that some images may be being unfairly overlooked because they're not being fully viewed.

Any comments?

Phil I have used the CTF booth for many months and love it. Once the bugs have been ironed out, I think this will work well.

Throughout the challenge period, as photos are being entered, I look every day and check out the new ones, revisit previous ones etc. When it comes time to vote, I have 2 browsers open......one with the galleries, and another with the voting booth. Usually by then I have a fair idea of my choices, but check the images again in the galleries before casting my votes. It's faster and more efficient than voting in the thread, and saves a lot of copying, pasing and typing.

You can view the larger images in the booth by clicking thumbnail or by selecting the correct link for it.

I may also make it pull up the medium size thumbnail for the entire booth instead of the thumbnail size as an option.

It's still slower than navigating via pbase using next/previous.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think the booth is great, it could just do with being more tightly integrated (easier said than done, I know).

Why not keep on doing that then? I find it's the best way also.

Just select images like you used to. Presumably you browsed the galleries and selected your favourites, or put them on paper, or on notepad and then keyed in your voting thread on DPreview.

I always browse the galleries in one window, and the voting thread in another.

Now I have the galleries open in one window, and the booth in the other. I don't vote on the booth thumbnails - just the PBase originals.

In fact, in the CTF booth, the thumbnail option had been there for about 12 months and I had never used it! Now I just find it makes things easier to locate in the booth but it doesn't change the way I vote.

Ok, I will try to vote normally again.

Your assumption about the error is correct a small icon on the status bar that you have to click to see details.

If I get it again I will quote it again. I wonder If im doing something wrong? I have been able to vote in CTF challanges just fine.

Can I just ask that whoever wins this challenge please pretty please pick a tighter topic?

We've had a few in a row now that have been very very open ended, and in my opinion, not enough of a challenge. A challege to take a very good picture yes, it always is, but not enough of a challenge to take a picture that is on theme.

I'd really like to see something tight and restrictive, something that really makes me look for something to get into the challenge. I'm sorry, but complementary colours, patterns and light are simply too broad.

Of course, this is just me, and whoever wins gets the final say.... :)

Cheers,
Karl P

Here is a copy of the error. I had to type couldn't cut and paste:

Error: Object expected
Code: 0

This is all that it says in the details box.

....if I win this challenge, I promise I'll choose "Monotrenes" as the topic.....that's about as narrow as you can get ;-)

I tend to agree with you....as much as I enjoy an "open" challenge occasionally, I also like shooting to a defined topic. I think that's why I enjoyed the "Liquids" challenge so much, although at first I had my doubts.

I really stretched my abilities in that one and Joe's portraits challenge and felt I learned a lot from both. And I will never live down my statement that "portraits really aren't my thing".

It's difficult to choose a topic that suits everyone. I have now hosted 3 CTF challenges, so I know how hard it can be. I have also participated in many, many more and enjoyed some very much, took part in others with less enthusiasm. The previous CTF topic was "Lights Out" (which I won) so I was a bit disappointed to see "Light" chosen as the topic for this challenge. They overlapped by a week so for 3 weeks now I have been trying to shoot "light" related photos. I need daylight!

Camels.

In the interests of broad participation, I suggest we open it up to both dromedary and bactrian varieties. So, if the question arises...

Q: One hump or two?
A: Sure, why not.
