Okay. This is my first attempt at uploading some of these photos...the first two from late yesterday taken with a 50 f/1.8 clearly exhibit the color shift. Two from this morning from 70-200VR at f/2.8 seem not to. You decide. These were not retouched, only resized to 680 pixels.

The last picture is from this beast that wandered into my yard as I was shooting and started growling at me as if he owned the joint! So I decided to shoot him :-) I did USM this one...

Dan,

I understand that the first two are underexposed...maybe I should go out with my 50/ F1.8 and try and get better exposure with the current "bright" lighting condition. I understand it is difficult to run into a situation where you would actually need this shutter speed under normal conditions at ISO 200. I am not here to complain, I am merely trying to show that as reported, there is an issue.

However, this shot below is also underexposed but does not exhibit the phenomena and I am very pleased with the results. Trust me, I am not trying to feed the trolls, just trying to show that, yeah, it may be an issue, but, then it may not. I love the camera and wouldn't return it even if this remains an issue. I honestly don't think that I will ever spoil a photo because of it.

Of course the effect is visible in DSC-0018. It seems that this color shift is really about drastically underexposing and once you use a proper exposure it disappears. As I recall back in the dark ages when I underexposed film I also used to get some poor results!
Just my opinion

I agree...I just went out and shot a few with the 50 f/1.8...I think you will like the results :-)

Craig,

I didn't think you were feeding the trolls. I think you were reporting the facts - a good thing, IMO.

My D70 should be here by Wednesday, so I'm pretty committed at this point. I expect that the D70 will not be a perfect camera (they don't exist). The best we can hope for is that the camera meets our needs and gives us the pics that we want with minmimal hassles. I'm just trying to understand if there is an issue and the extent to which it exists and under what conditions.

Based on the evidence that I've gathered so far, there may be an issue under the following conditions:
  • 1/4000-1/8000 second shutter speed
  • 200 ISO
  • Underexposed
  • Firmware 1.00
My interest is proactive - how we can move forward. With more information, we can determine if the issue exists with later cameras (because of later manufacturing or firmware version), or at different ISOs, or at different exposure levels, or at different shutter speeds. This helps us define workarounds, potential fixes, etc.

My D70 will also be a US unit. When I get mine, I'll try to repeat the tests so that we can compare results.

I much appreciate your efforts.

Best regards,

Dan.

...and they aren't all that great :-(

I stepped out and shot 3 pics...all using 50 f/1.8 wide open, all ISO 200. First two at 8000 SS and not at all underexposed. The color shift is evident, at least slightly. D@mn!

Third shot at 5000 and no color issues evident...hurrah?

As I said earlier, this is my first dSLR, been shooting film for 25 years with various Canon rigs. I bought the D70 so that I would have a "real" camera as my first foray into DSLR. I still think I made the right choice...especially when paired with the 70-200 VR (this beast just begs for a subject to point it at!)

Here are the samples with EXIF...

I see the grid on the 1st 2 images on the left side.
Okay...I think I see it, very faint "grid" pattern in the sky, lower left...do you know how to do a 100% crop in PS6 and I will post it from the original NEF? I don't really know how to do this and save as a jpeg...I am a newbie at this sort of stuff.

If I zoom in on the NEF it comes and goes as I go from 25% to 200%...is that not just aliasing from the pixel resolution to screen resolution? It really shows up at 75% but goes away at 100%, then back again at 180%. I really don't want to start another "oh my god" thing if it is simple rendering artifact. It looks kinda like pixelization.

photogs,

I am really worried after seeing your pic!!! Your pic exposure looks fine to me, and those pictures are prob some of the pictures that I would take. Shooting into the sky or portraits using F1.8 under bright lighting. And the grid!!! I am worried... cuz so far I haven't seen any explaination yet and can only sit and wait.

Even for your wind chime pic, I sort of see the color shift on the top. I dont know which vertical way you film this, but I see it.

I travel a lot, esp to beaches locations. I dont want to end up with shots with color shifts and go home jumping ups and downs! I haven't bought it yet, but I have been anticipating this highly rated cam... I am gonna hold off for sure!!!

The wind chime picture sure looks looks fine to me. This shift in color mentioned below sure looks lools a pretty accurate depiction of the way that the sky changes in color as it goes from the horizon to the zenith overhead.
