Hi all

I'm a new owner of an F700. I wanted something to take around on my ski-ing and walking trips that was more "luggable" than my Canon EOS 10D and the F700 seemed to meet all criteria. So far, I am very pleased with it (see my first photos from a recent ski-ing trip to Utah at http://ardpix.co.uk/photos/4images/categories.php?cat_id=4 ).

What I would be interested to see whether anyone has any web-based photo galleries showing the results from this camera.

Hi Alan

Very nice sharp good colour and well exposed pictures, certainly seems an ideal pocketable camera.

Good shots. Did you go with Auto, or turn up the EV a bit given all the snow?

In terms of F700 galleries, I know raist has a large one, as does phill ( http://www.philnoir.com ). Also search on pbase under camera database. I haven't posted any yet.

I think you are the target user for the F700. Someone this SLR/dSLR backround who wants a portable camera without sacrificing speed or creative control.

What is you impression based on your shots so far. Do the F700 shots seem to soft, or need much postprocessing to get them to what you are used to?
Good luck.

I like your shots but some of the snow shots look overexposed to me. What kind of light metering were you using?

Seems like a notch or two down the EV scale would have put them "in"... Dynamic range should have kicked in here :-) Probably it did. Probably my Canon would have had a harder time.

Hi raist

Thanks for the comments and the link - loads of great photos on your site which I'll look at in more detail later on this evening. Are they all taken with the F700 as I see you now have a F710 (I think!)?

Regarding my snow being over-exposed, I set the camera to 'P' and used an EV compensation of +1 which I thought was generally correct for snowy scenes. I let the camera then get on with it. Perhaps the error came when I gave the photos a quite blast in Photoshop to sharpen them up a bit and sort out contrast.

Maybe in my case "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"?

Thanks for the link, Phil. Some great photos on your site which confirm to me that the F700 is a good camera capable of producung some lovely photographs. I cannot understand why it got less-than-enthusiastic reviews on both here and slightly better at http://www.steves-digicams.com . The British digital photography press seem to love it!

I envy you living in Santa Barbara; I have stayed in the area on several occasions on vacation and it is one of the few places in the USA that I would love to live!

Keep taking the photos and making me jealous.

Thanks, TK. I set the camera to P and gave +1 to the EV. The shots looked good straight out the camera in terms of sharpness but I gave them a sharpening tweak in Photoshop, especially as I alway compress the photos before posting them to my web site. I'll pick a favourite and print it out A4 to see what it is really like.

Thanks for the gallery info.

Thanks for the comments, Mike. Yes, overall, I am very pleased with the results form the camera, espesically when I only had done limited research into a second camera and went on the press quotes from the Fujifilm advert on the back of a digital photogrpahy magazine I'd taken to read whilst on holiday in the USA!

One of the biggest criticisms of the compact digital camera is in shutter lag but this seems to be not noticeable on this camera.

I enjoyed your pbase site; some great images there.

Best wishes

Note that the still life shots on Phill's site are at ISO 800!

Imaging resource and DCResource both had very favorable reviews. the main proble seems to be its initial high price, maketing as a true 6MP cam and all the overblown hype about the SR sensor- it helps, but is not as revolutionary- in the F700 application- as fuji claims.

It's all F700. The F710 is not out in the market just yet, not even in Japan I think or maybe "just" got there. The F710 so far unfortunately Fuji US says "won't be here" but I am sure that will change... the question is how long it will take.
Regarding my snow being over-exposed, I set the camera to 'P' and

I would say next time in that situation try bracketing with +1 and -1. I thought maybe a -1EV or +0 EV would have been better, but I could be wrong. I am still growing in photography and the knowledge you just mentioned is new to me so I dunno. Something to try I guess.

Hello,
What I would be interested to see whether anyone has any web-based
photo galleries showing the results from this camera.
I've got a scattering of F700 pictures on my two photo sites (one is colour, one B&W). I bought one several weeks ago for my brother. I liked it so much I went and bought one for myself. My main camera is a Panasonic FZ-10.

Colour: http://tripping.seeto.com/
B&W: http://luke.tymowski.org/

I don't identify the pictures by camera though. (I know which is which myself, but that won't help you.)

I find the metering more accurate on the Fuji than on the FZ10. The FZ10 tends to overexpose (or maybe I just have a wonky one), which doesn't bother me because 99% of the time I shoot it in full manual mode (to learn). With the Fuji if I have the time I shoot in manual mode, otherwise if I don't have time to fiddle with the buttons I leave it on P.

The Fuji I set to soft and in Photoshop Elements I sharpen using 500%, 0.3, and 1 as my sharpening settings. The FZ10 I use 300%, 0.3, and 1. Both cameras are set to soft, but the Fuji images are softer than the FZ10.

I also turn off the LCD on the Fuji because there's enough of a delay (tiny but it's there) for me to lose the picture if something is moving.

I find that while the images don't look fabulous at 100% on screen, the prints are brilliant (biggest I've done so far have been 8x10s).

The camera works well in low-light, but only if the subject isn't moving. The lens isn't bright enough for that (it would need to be a 1.4 or 1.2). So indoors I shoot wide open. I've had useable pictures all the way to iso1600. With my FZ10 useable pictures start at iso 50 and end at iso 100. No substitute for a dSLR with a 1.4ish lens, but then you can't stick a dSLR in your pocket and go.

Here's a sunset (full manual) from the other day - the one day in 2 weeks where we had a sunny day.

It's a brilliant little camera. I'm delighted with it. I just wish the JPEG compression wasn't so damned harsh - but that doesn't affect prints too much. I might change that statement if I tried to size them rather big - beyond 11x14.

Luke

Doesn't +1 over expose by 1/3 stop? I am thinking you would want to go -1. I could be totally wrong though.
