In Stock, Singapore ?

Congratulations!

Harap awak banga dengan D70 juga yah!

Henry Goh
Just got mine + kit lens few hours ago. I am in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Paid roughly US$ 1,300 for the whole thing.
I suppose Canon Singapore should in-sync wiyh Canon Indonesia
concerning D70 availability.

That's equal to USD $1,228. Add on U.S. customs duty and Nikon's questionable attitute toward international warranties, and it may not make sense to by it overseas.

Most sells the kit for S$2100.--. Yes if Henry Goh could help it
would be great.

Hi,

I will also be in Singapore in 3 weeks and I'll be picking up a D70
kit.

It would be great if any residents and/or D70 owners (Henry Goh?)
could offer some advice on where to pick up the camera at a good
price??

Does anyone know what price the kit is selling for in S'pore ?

This will be my first DSLR and I'm wondering what 'must by'
accessories I'll need other than a memory card ?

Cheers,
Lee

Where I live (South Africa) it will cost at least USD2000, maybe USD2200.

So I am interested in the Singapore prices, and yes, I will have to take a view on the warranty issues. The local Nikon agent won't support it - understandable considering their massive loss of profit.

But coming from other countries those sums may be different.

That's clearly understandable. You don't have to pay any exorbitant customs duties when you arrive home, I hope.

I second Cathay Photo, which is Singapore's largest photo store.
There are two outlets, one at Peninsular Plaza, the other at Marina
Square. Check out the website at http://www.cathayphoto.com.sg/ .
I was there this afternoon and heard that new stocks for D70 are
arriving this Friday. I'll suggest that you get an I-quotation
before you come to Singapore. If the price is good (S$2100 appears
to be the standard price), you may want to ask them to reserve a
unit for you.

Another shop with a website is TK Foto Technic at shaw Towers.
http://www.tkfoto.com.sg/index.html
Again, get an E-quotation for the best rates. The level of service
is quite good.

John 3:16 at Funan is not bad, but the small shop tends to get
crowded after office hours and on Saturdays. It does not open on
Sundays. The prices are in general slightly higher than Cathay
Photo's, though for the D70, it may be the same. MS Color at Ang Mo
Kio http://www.mscolor.com.sg/profile.htm offers pretty competitive
rates but it's a little less convenient to get to.

I would give the shops in Orchard Road (especially Lucky Plaza) and
Sim Lim Square a wide berth. Alan Photo is at Sim Lim Square, and
Henry Goh recommends that place, as do some other local
photographers and enthusiasts. Unfortunately, I've read that only
one person at Alan Photo provides consistently good service and
quotes a good price. This may be true, it may not be. I've never
had good experience at that shop, but it could be the
'hey-come-rip-me-off, I'm-a-young-female-photographer face'. LOL.
You might have better luck there!
I had the same good experience at Cathay Photo at Peninsula (this store closes on Sunday).

Alan Photo sucks and I always wonder why people would recommend it. The only reason I can think of is it's in Sim Lim Square, where the same people who would go to the IT shops find it convenient. I walked into Alan looking for a D70 last week and they guys (yes the bunch of them) there insisted S$2,150 and would use high pressure tactic like it's the last piece and selling fast to trick me into it. Every time I walk into this shop, I find the salesman there far too intimidating for any comfort. Also, I seeing in a complaint list where Alan Photo is one of them.

There are other shops in Sim Lim that are much better in service and yet price competively, Dynastic Audio at level is one good example. In any case, Sim Lim Square is not a good place for photographic equipment.

The customs duties are less when you bring it in personally, which I hope to do (I am going diving in Indonesia but will transit through Singapore). I should be liable for about USD150 in duties. A lot, but the sums still work. Unless I have warranty claims, of course. Then it all falls down - I will have to rely on my old SLR experience with Nikon - never had a warranty claim with three cameras and numerous lenses.
