A request for the newcombers to this forum ...

Maybe someone could ask Phil for a Nikon non-newbie forum and have a test to get in it based on general knowledge and data-base use...

Thanks, Owen, for pointing the obvious that I missed :-). I guess the problem is that so many folks, me included, often forget to "whack out" all the bits which are not pertinent to our response. I'd sure like to say that I never make that mistake, but the "glass house" thing comes to mind.....

I'm leaving all the text in this time because it is short and pertinent :-).
Richard, I have actually never understood the requrest to not top
post and when I have asked for the rationale no one has given me
any.
The reason for posting an answer at the bottom and leaving the text
is so people can follow the questions/answers in sequential order.

That said, I actually prefer top posting.

...or in fact was it really directed at anyone. It's just that these threads always waste as much time as what you are trying to cure. If you do not want to read a thread then skip it.

Look at the first page of this forum and you will see people asking which lense to purchase. It's not even a lens forum. Redundant messages are and always will be a fact. Other than Phil's storage space cause or cost nothing.

I repeat myself but these threads bother me more than redundancy or posting in the wrong forum.

Everybody’s got their favorite pet peeve I guess. Mine is flaming people that don’t agree with you. I did not use profanity or their initials to communicate my point.

It is policing the forum if you request, instruct or tell people how to be or do.

How many rules have you broken?

Commercial advertising - Commercial website linking or advertising is not allowed, if you wish to advertise on the site contact us. This rule includes webmasters of other digital photography websites promoting themselves on the forum. You will be banned and have all of your messages removed.

Be civil - anyone being abusive, calling names or generally trying to stir up trouble will not be tolerated. If you think someone is wrong it may be because they are new, don't jump on them, think first. If you are repeatedly abusive you will be banned from these forums.

New posters - Before you ask a question please check to see if someone else has asked it before, ask our search engine first.

No Off Topic - Please keep all off-topic messages to the Open Talk forum, that's what it is there for. Off Topic messages may be moved to Open Talk or deleted if posted in one of the main forums, repeated posting of Off Topic messages can lead to a ban.

Site questions / comments - Please check our Site FAQ first, you may have a question which has already been answered. If not, send us feedback, don't post site questions in the forums.

Question for the webmaster - DO NOT POST "Question for Phil" or "Phil,..." messages, the webmaster doesn't have time to scan through or respond to all the forums.

For Sale - We don't allow for sale messages (at all).

SPAM - Anyone posting the same (or similar) message more than twice in any of the forums. No single user may start more than three new threads in any fifteen minute period, this helps to limit SPAM and wasteful cross-posting.

Flame / Attacks - We do not tolerate abusive, malicious, personal attacks or self-promoting messages. See first rule.

Trolls - Anyone deliberately antagonizing other forum users by posting 'flame bait' type messages are not welcome. See first rule.

Bashing - Deliberately and repeatedly bashing the same brand, product or company will get you banned. If you have a complaint or comment to make then make it once and make sure you have facts to support it. See first rule.

Bumping - Deliberately 'bumping' your message back to the top of the forum with no new content.

Posting several pictures - If you're posting several pictures post then all in one message or post a link to a gallery. Posting several messages with just one image in each in a short period will be treated as SPAM - deleted.

Glamour / Nude / Bikini pictures - Please do not embed such images in your messages, while we understand that such pictures (tastefully shot) are a big part of commercial photography we do have a worldwide audience and wide range of paying advertisers. If you wish to bring a gallery of such images to peoples attention then please just post a link. We will not allow nude / semi-nude pictures of children or links to such galleries.

Voyeuristic pictures - We do not allow posting of voyeur pictures.

Harassment - If we receive complaints about users harassing other users either by forum message, email or by other methods you will be banned immediately. If serious enough we will also contact your ISP and report the matter.

Software piracy - We do not allow the posting of serial numbers, cracks, warez links or anything related to the piracy of software.

Legal ownership - Each message posted is owned by and the opinion of the original poster. Neither dpreview.com nor its owners or webmaster are legally responsible for anything posted on these forums.

I for one don't mind peoples questions, even if they have been asked before.

What Phil should implement, is at the top of each forum a Top 10 or 20

most often questions asked be listed. This would be a logical place for new members to start.

I also would like to see each particular Camera forum have a workflow forum which would give people a place to ask specific workflow related questions. We all know that Canon is different than Nikon which is different than Fugi and so on.

IMO this nikon forum has way too much static .

My message right here for example (:->

But just LOOK at the Canon forums. Nkon TOTAL has 350,000 and the Canon 10D forum ALONE has 850,000, just in ONE.

I'm not sure anyone over in the Canon forums actually use their camera's, they seem to be very busy posting comparisons, and discussing what is missing from Nikon AND Canon technology....

Ron
I think they should split the forum.
300D get its own forum .. I don't see why not D70....

I don't understand the 150 post per thread rule either. It has no logical use and is annoying when people are discussing stuff that is useful.

The D70 has so much in common with the D2H that IMO D2H users are likely the most valuable resouce a new D70 user may find.

I guess I likely qualify as one of those "bored old time users"....

I certainly will not be distressed by D70 questions.

I am however, not looking forward to the lazyness of new D70 uses who blame their equipment for poor quality images without even reading the manual. Hey, I shot this image at f11 at 1/8 second, and it blurry, nikon sucks....

We went through this with the D100 jpg curve and softness thing, then the D2H noise thing, and now it looks like it will be the D70 green thing....

Ironically in all cases, other users were/are posting great images daily with their camera's.

BTW, Not sure what an innocent newcomer is either? I'm not sure I've met anyone over the age of 12 that I would describe as "innocent"....

Cheers!
Ron
I totally agree: keep the current forum and let the bored old time
users entertain themselves in an old time users forum where they
won't get disturned by enthousiasm from innocent newcomers.

... put your equipment into your signatures, as it plays havoc with searches.

Instead, put it into your profiles. Thank you.

Just what on earth is a 'lense'?

There is absolutely no need to carry text, and, worse still, images especially when someone has posted say five of them, from one reply to the next.

All right, I have seen the images in the first post, and I don't want to have to wait for them to download AGAIN in the tenth reply. There are a lot of folk here who still are on dial-up connections. Think of them before you hit the "Post" button. It's also a waste of (precious) bandwidth, and it annoys me intensly when I see it happening here again and again. People should really know better.

And the same goes for text, and the endless accumulation of previous posts.

Excellent advice.

Let me just add one other possibility - which worked for me.

When I was researching the D100 before buying it, I browsed the whole forum. It was very easy - just kept hitting the button to go to the previous page. Subject lines here are very good. Any time I saw a subject that seemed relevant, I browsed the thread.

I found a lot of info that I may not have looked for via a search engine.

I just did the same thing for a new purchase - 24-120 VR. Browsed here and in the lens forum. Got a very good idea of what to expect.

(Lens is sitting on my desk, beckoning me to leave work early. Itwil get its first real workout on Saturday, at the local botonical garden.)

to be sure that they are posting a new squirrel, or cat, or
whatever...

Perhaps a visual pattern match search?

If each squirrel post contained a statement that the squirrel was caught, cooked and eaten, we would be assured that we were seeing a fresh one the next time. :-)

(Please tell me that PETA does not monitor this forum.)

Dude, I don't mean it like that. I remember when I got my D100 I posted some threads based on my own ignorance. I think with so many cameras and more forum members it makes sense. If you're truely a Nikon enthusiast (which I believe most of us are) a split forum can help bring more focus to certain discussions. I'm beginning to dislike good informative threads getting ignored. Also it will make it harder for trolls to trash the whole entire forum, I think.

It shouldn't be like the Canon forum though, it should be like this:

Nikon D70/D100 SLR Talk
Nikon D1 and D2 Series SLR Talk
First of all, Welcome to all the new or future users of Nikon DSLRs
or SLRs and a warm welcome to this great forum.

This forum is really the key to knowng a lot about Nikon and their
history and how to use the Nikon equipment a little better and more
efficiently.

I just have one quick request for everyone ...

Before opening or posting a new thread, can you look and seek in
the search engine on this forum. Many many threads are already
answered and repetitive where the answer can be found quickly thru
the searching engine.

That's all,

Welcome all ...

Also, it is imcumbent on everyone to select and use suitable
"subject" lines - so the usage of the search facility is more
effective
-------

A very good point that. Those useless and wasteful subject lines like, "Help", "I need to know", "What do you think", "Lens question", and . . . well I think you get my drift.
