First of all, Welcome to all the new or future users of Nikon DSLRs or SLRs and a warm welcome to this great forum.

This forum is really the key to knowng a lot about Nikon and their history and how to use the Nikon equipment a little better and more efficiently.

I just have one quick request for everyone ...

Before opening or posting a new thread, can you look and seek in the search engine on this forum. Many many threads are already answered and repetitive where the answer can be found quickly thru the searching engine.

That's all,

Welcome all ...

........as an example of wasted bandwidth two threads at the same time wondering if the D70 will be at Best Buys....a search would have shown it has been discussed many times before.

Thanks for the post Yves. I know many people logging onto these forums may not have known about the search feature. BTW, here are some photos I have taken recently that I like. Granted, there not nearly as good as yours (I'm still new at this), but I like them. They were shot using a Minolta G400. I'm already seeing limitations with this camera, like dof. I'm looking into getting either a Nikon D70, or 8700. I know those cameras are totally different styles, but I can't decide whether to go DSLR or Prosumer. These forums are helping my decision, though.

I don't mean it in the camera snob way...it will help isolate specific questions for new users and it won't push down threads for long time users. Just a better way to organize things in my opinion.

Perhaps you can write to Phil and ask if he can do something about the overload on the search-engine.

I sympathise with your request but if this overload issue remains, most forummembers will post a new e-mail, that's for sure!!

it's one of the rules of posting on this forum! But we all know how it is with people reading instructions first...

But just in case there's anyone new here that may be interested, here they are:

Also, it is imcumbent on everyone to select and use suitable "subject" lines - so the usage of the search facility is more effective

Some really good hints and tips are buried in threads which have a completely different subject, and so may be missed even after performing a search.

I have to say that more than half the times I've tried to use the search engine it has been unavailable (due to "loading" issues) - so newbies will still post before being able to search if this facility isn't improved.

there are some severe limitations to trying to search old posts which can make it quite cumbersome to find information. I have tried to research several topics here (and other forums) with limited success. I tried to find information on exactly how to use the Pringles cap and there were so so many references to it that it took wading through several pages of posts before I found a suitable "how-to" for it. I've tried searching for tips on sharpening D100 pics when sending to a lab for processing with minimal luck and recently for information on a 24-120 non-VR lens with a D100. With this last one it was impossible to exclude the VR from the query so finally gave up after wading through several posts about the 24-120 AF-S VR.

Yes, I know that some of you will be able to type in exactly the correct term in the search engine and find the answers in a few seconds, but oftentimes I don't know enough about the topic and terminology to put in those exact words - and the only one query every 60 seconds gets frustrating when a search return no results.

Don't get me wrong - this place is fantastic - I've said so several times, but I just understand that as a newbie it can be quite cumbersome to search through 1300 pages of posts!

I agree with Yves, welcome aboard, I hope you will find this forum as useful as I have. I have picked up quite a bit of information since I have been a member. Of course the forum also caused me to spend quite a bit of money on new equipment also. The least expensive item was Yves Pringle cap. Lenses, cameras and lighting equipment were at the other end of the spectrum.

I want to add a comment about another forum policy that is often ignored. Some members list their equipment in the signature block that appears at the bottom of every post they make. Here is why this should not be done.

Anything that is in this block will also show up in a search. Don't list your equipment in this area as it causes MANY, MANY false hits when you do a search.

There is a section in your profile where you can list your equipment if you wish. Members can then access your profile to see what you have. Items listed in this area do not affect the results of a search.

should those who want to post squirrels and cats also check if they've been posted before?

I hope you take it as a sympathy joke.

When replying to a message, delete non pertinent type that was previous posted in the thread.

I for one get tired of having to scroll way down to see the new responses. The same goes for embedded images. Once an image is shown then every response doesnt' have to have that same embedded image.

Maybe this is just me.
