Looking for a good image tank solution that can understand raws and has a very fast (USB2 or FW) read speed from the inserted CF. Hopefully it would also be flash upgradeable to support the upcoming 1Dmk2 .CR2 format. Discuss!

I got the 40 gig version for Christmas (there is also an 80 gig version).
It has a large screen (though resolution is just so - so)
It reads my 10D and D60 raw files and is flash upgradable.

You put the CF card in a slot at the front and push a button. If it is not already turned on, it turns on and copies the files to its hard disk.
It connects to the computer with a USB typeII interface.
Will also play mp3s if you llike.

I would estimate that a fully charged battery lasts for a couple of hours of downloading and reviewing images.

I don't have the specs with me at work but I would guess it weighs half a pound with battery.
All in all I like it quite well -- sure beats lugging around a laptop on a trip.

I have the Image Tank 20 gig version. I was on a shoot and lost 1 CF card full of photos. The copy was corrupted. The Image Tank(Bank) does not have a verify function, so I trusted it and got burned.

Well the next day I bought this item:
Nixvue Vista from here:
http://www.jobodigital.com/products/digital_used_demo.htm
(Ask if they have any demo models-they are usually cleaner)

You can get the firewire attachment here:

I have the image tank. I haven't used it that much. The battery seems to lose charge quickly over time sitting by itself. I am considering getting another brand of storage that has a battery replacement capability. I will then use both as a back up.

Thanks for asking this question.....I wanted more info on this as well.

I use an iPod with a Belkin media reader. It's fast with the computer due to FireWire but I fund it slow from card to iPod.

I like it becuase when I'm not using it to backup my pictures I can listen to music on it but it's probably not the fasted device around.

I only trust something where I can verify that the photos are properly copied. I then burn a cd as backup.

Steve,

According to the spec sheet, with software version 2.1, images download with firewire technology. What version do you have?

I think the slowness Steve is referring to is from the Belkin media reader to the iPod which almost certainly uses the dock connector (Firewire transfer). Probably the Belkin cannot read data off the card as fast as the hard drive can read when copying to computer.

therefore he is not only intelligent, but he makes everything else look half-baked. Just teasing.

I like this solution and am moving toward using a file compare program to compare what I have just loaded to the laptop with what's on the CF card. I use a cardbus adapter and it has speeded up my loads by a factor of 5 (I think). Very fast.

Also, this is the biggy -- laptops are a mature product. Image tanks are not. So the laptops are well-developed for field use in terms of being physically stable. Laptops are constantly pushing for the outer limits in up-time. So you pick up a Dell and it has like 8 hours you can run on the battery (or something rediculous like that). When I'm shooting a wedding, I don't always have the luxury of being able to plug in. Being able to verify with a visual, and burn CDs is frosting on the cake. If you're hot to eliminate a single point of failure, TWO laptops should suffice (I'm trying to talk myself into it here). Or just stick one of those portable drives on it. Enough already.

All the best whatever you decide.

It takes a few minutes to download a 1 gig microdriev though using the mindstor pcmia card

I use a 10gig Image Tank, it works Ok but it's waayy slow, about 15 minute to download a 1gig microdrive and even slower uploading to my Mac. i plug it in when I get home at night after a race and the next morning it's done and I'm ready to go.

but does anyone know if you can buy any 4-in-1 adaptor so that you can use a SD card with it (thinking down the road and 1d2 using SD cards)?

Also, anyone know why the 40gb version costs less than the 30gb version?

Hi,

I prefer the all-stainless steel ones....

Sorry. Couldn't resist. ;)

Seriously, though, I use an IBM X30 notebook PC for this function. It has an 80 GB drive, so there's a lot of space. My main processing machine is an IBM A31p (dual 80 GB drives), but the X30 get used a lot since it's smaller and lighter.

Stan

Yea, the laptop would probably more stable and reliable. I just wish my laptop had firewire. It would be nice to have a reliable mini storage device in a hip bag when doing weddings solo.

Ozy is probablly looking for opinions from people he has grown to respect over time. If those people are here then I think it is the right forum.

Kyle

I would suggest you call them and ask (or better yet e-mail so if they say it will and it doesn't you have a bit more recourse). Here is a link for a 4 in 1 adapter.

The linked product might work, although it says only compatible with cards up to 256mb -- looking for something that will take a 512mb or 1gb size.
