I'm liking the F828 less and less... :-(

you're welcome :)

those comparative shots would be really great :) because i dont get that kind of blown out colors, and i really like to understand how problems occur, incase i might find myself in that same situation, it's also good experience for the next camera/printer we will own :)
Merci, mon ami!
Will post some soon: From the original digital photo and scanned
print of the same photo.
Heh! Thanks!

Well, let's hope with another flash it doesn't occur anymore... I
wouldn;t want to be so sure until I've shot another 1,000 pics!
to take things positively : i'm sure that a least you'll be shooting those at any chance you get :)
I sent the photos out to print: Fuji FDi Station and Fujifilm
paper. Will scan in the print and post the original photo as well
soon...
maybe the guys at fuji station make some kind of post processing before printing them ? you know the kind of batch autoprocess... click on one button, it will process all the pictures of a folder and print them... ?
anyone got insider info on this ? :)

Yes, some will think you unreasonable, but I dont blame you. It's hard coming out here and saying bad things about the 828 with all the zealots running around here, but someines you just have to call a spade a spade. It's a bummer that the 828 didnt work out for you, I remember how excited you were when you first got it. Good luck.
They couldn't fix that weird 'interlace effect'...
http://tigadee.fotopic.net/c104081.html

Even the replacement cam had it, worst in fact, as I snapped 25
pics and 7 came out with that problem! :-O

I have also gotten 100 prints back and all those with either
green-blue or red in them have blown out colors! Even the blacks
have lost details in them!

I am very unhappy with Sony this time and I am going to ask for a
refund! And plase don't label me a whiner or as being negative - I
am a long-time Sony user, as well as using my F707 for more than 2
years and know the F-series inside-out. PF and noise I can live
with, but this defect with either the CCD or firmware chip or
whatever it is, is just too much! > :-(

I took to the F828 quick and well enough, I knew it had new tech in
it that may need some time to be worked with, yet I did not expect
it to let me down so badly! :-(

Sorry guys, I think I'll be going with something else. Maybe the
D70 or an S2 Pro if I can find one...

Hey Rich,

Well, it's been a wild ride and the F828 while having some dissappointments has been an otherwise good camera. I'm glad at least that Sony Malaysia has been very reasonable and accepting that a problem occurred and they are investigating whether it may be a camera defect.

Their offer of a new camera from the next batch that arrives or a refund is also very reasonable and I'm glad they see the sense in that. Thanks, EE.

Apparently has L optics sitting on that body, even includes a flourite element which is really only used on the high end L class teles.

sorry about your plight, but how is it Sony's fault that your flash doesn't work with their camera? I wasn't able to load the link you posted so maybe it's covered there, but I just don't get it.
A good cheap bounce flash that served me well through three other
digicams (Fuji MX2900Z, Sony D770 and with some modifications, on
the Olympus C2100UZ aka Uzi)...

Fast recharge time although seems to be a bit darker with the F828
than the other flash I've used: Metz Mecablitz 28C.

With the Metz 28C it does not happen, I think because it is
stronger and brighter but for some reason recharges very much
slower on the F828, even though it is actually a very fast charging
flash... :-(

That's very interesting. Does it happen with any external flash or

I did the same as you and returned my Sony 828 after 48 hrs for a refund !

I have been reading about the Sony 828 since last summer thinking that it would be the perfect camera for me so on Thursday I picked up a Sony 828 knowing all the potential problems together with the positive aspects the camera gives after reading STF.

I took about 30 images with the camera and one of them did not look right on the screen so I printed the image at A4 size. I was very surprised to see a lot of purple fringing which was not obvious on the screen. The image had a tree in the background and the edge of the trunk showed PF, and also some laurel leaves were purple. To me this is totally unacceptable and I have returned the camera to the dealer for a refund.

One of my main uses for the camera is taking images of Hang Gliders (a lot of which will be printed in a magazine). Inevitably they have the sky in the background so I envisage a lot of Hang Gliders with purple leading edges !

I have read in STF that you can use Photoshop to remove PF - only problem is that I do not own this software and am unlikely to do so as it costs about £ 500 in the UK.

Another concern is that the residual value of the Sony could be poor because it is not exactly getting a good reputation. This is important to me as I have been replacing my camera every year. From Olympus C2000 to C3030 to C4040 then Minolta 7i which I sold last October. I have a Pentax Optio 330GS which means that I have not been 'without' a digital camera while waiting for the Sony.

I shall now wait and see - I am not interested in the 300d because I need a 28-200 mm lens and do not want to carry two lenses and would be very expensive.

I can probably wait until April before buying a new camera so I will see what is available then. Maybe the 8m Minolta ? If not I shall probably buy the Olympus 5060 as a stopgap camera - present UK price is £450 compared to £700 I paid for the Sony. I am not interested in the 717 as I need a 28 mm lens and also I have several Compact Flash cards and a Hitachi 4 GB microdrive courtesey of a Muvo.

I do not know how to post the offending 828 image on STF - I do not subscribe to any photo sharing site. If anybody wants to see the image I will be happy to e-mail it direct.

You did what's best for you. At least you have the option now of the A2 or Powershot Pro.

After reading Phil's review I was sitting on the fence in regards of buying the 828.

Your experience gave me the final push, and I decided not to upgrade to 828. I'll stay with my 717, until something that I like will come out. I can wait, and the money isn't burning a hole in my pocket.

Thank you for your assistance,

Yehuda

Well, I don't know if some may look kindly upon my 'assistance'. I myself like the F828 but it hasn't endeared itself to me the way my F707 did.

Still, gotta love:
That body (solid and built like a Merkava tank!),
manual lens (remember the D770?),
sharper EVF (for once I can manual focus accurately!!),
CF (my 2GB holds 1000+ 5mp fine photo!!!),
hotshoe (finally I get to re-use my collection of external flashes!)
battery life
faster AF (lots faster than the F707)
fast playback, review, etc
better efficient menu/controls system

Lot of good the F828 has but the few bad is making me grow into it slower than did the F707. At least the F707 only had the blown reds and BFS (initially and then fixed by firmware update) plus the minor ergonomic deficiences I encountered (that's just me).

Stay with your F717, you won't find all the improvements of the F828 that useful for your kind of photography (unless you really need the extra speed) and wait for the 838 or 939 or whatever is next end of this year! :-)

Meanwhile, you can also read Imaging-resource's F828 review. It's quite enlightening...

Facts so far:
-------------------

1. Several ppl have complained about this lines problem, with internal flash and in my case with external flash

2. The flash works on other cameras fine (it is a new one, I had another exact same one earlier which I sold with my Uzi)

3. Direct (frontal) flash does not induce the problem, only bounced and in orangey low-lighting

4. True, the problem does not seem to occur with my other flash, but the other flash seems to recharge very slowly on the F828 when it is actually very, very fast (I'll worry about that problem later)

5. Two cameras with the same problem, both from the same batch that came in before the end of January, 2004. Another Malaysian F828 user also complained of this problem, detail I do not know as I got this info 3rd hand from my photographer friend who was in the store and overheard the user complaining to the clerk about the problem

6. It may or may not be Sony's fault. As some have said, it could be the flash, but even the head of tech support admitted that it was serious enough that they'd send the pics to Sony Japan for evaluation. they'd have sent my camera too except that the replacement they offered me produced more of the problem than my original F828!

Once again I have to ask if this is with all your shots or just the ones with the external flash? The power from the flash can be doing so much harm to the camera that it has screwed everything up.

Also I would send some picture without the external flash for printing if you don't have your own printer, also use another company as the people at the fuji machine might not know what they are doing.

You need to try other options before you can say it is a camera problem.

Just like with my computer situation in my previous post you need to trouble shoot before claiming problems.

Good luck

Rick Niles wrote:
If your problem only happens with a particular flash than it really
isn't a camera problem right? It is a flash problem. I would not
blame the $1000 camera for the problems of a $100 flash. Its like
if I but a new video card for my computer and it makes the computer
run unstable crashing all the time, I don't take the computer back
to the manufacture, I get a different video card that will work
with the computer.

If you like the camera you will get a new flash. Most digital
cameras can only handle newer flashes with out risking the internal
electronics, I believe the flash you are using is to old.

But the main thing is get a new flash if you like the camera not a
new camera to go with your flash.

I'm also a 10D and L-glass owner. Let's face it - the 10D with L glass delivers technically-superb images - period. But it is a bulky system that sometimes begs to be left at home when I want to just roam around with a light load. I really wanted the 828 to work out, but I'm sending an 828 back tomorrow, not because of CA/PF, but mostly because of noise, and the related limited range of light that I can shoot in handheld. Plus I don't like the EVF. But I haven't given up, especially in light of the A2 and some of the other 8 MP cams being introduced in the near future.

Best of luck to everyone - this forum has some great photographers on it.

Doug
I on the other hand come from consumers to prosumers, so I think the image
quality is acceptable (and I hardly print larger than A1 sizes) and even the
CA/PF can be dealt with or else ignored most of the time.
I'm a bit different than some others, I'm reversing my direction. I
started with consumer digitals and moved to prosumer and then DSLR.
I have a Canon EOS 10D and a bag of lenses that I'm selling on ebay
for lack of use and thinking of replacing it with a prosumer
digital (828, Minolta A2 or Canon's new one). While I like the
image quality of the 10D I much prefer a prosumer with a good zoom
range and EVF for the live preview and the ease of use.

Carrying the equivalent of the 828 (and others) in the 10D around
on one of my photo hunts can be a chore. Often I've left the bag of
lenses locked in the car and gone walking around only to wish I'd
had them with me when I found something I wanted to photograph. Or,
worse, I've lugged the lenses around with me for hours and never
took the main lens I use off the camera.

So, I started leaving the 10D at home and taking the Minolta D7i.
After months of watching the 10D collect dust I decided to sell it
and get a higher resolution prosumer.

I LOVE the way the 828 feels in my hands and the samples I've seen
in this forum are just GORGEOUS. If PMA weren't next week I'd have
a 828 but since there's other cameras coming out soon I'll wait
just a bit to make my decision.

The 8mp Powershot Pro1 from Canon should be announced soon, it's basically a G5 (i.e. G8) with a 7x optical zoom range like the F828 and A1/A2. Its lens is even like Canon's L lenses - with a flourite element in it, whatever that does...
