Upgrade Sigma Lens?

I am in the market for a 10D and sent an email to Sigma to see about updating my 75-300 f:4.5-5.6 with EOS mount for use with the 10D. They replied saying parts were no longer availabe and they would give me a trade in value towards a new lens. However, I see in these forums that people are stil getting lenses updated by Sigma. Is it just my lens or are they just trying to sell me a new lens?

It probably is your lens. I've had a couple upgraded by Sigma (each took over two months....but that's another story....) and a couple they said were too old to be upgraded. So it really depends on the age of the equipment. I had a 50 mm Macro and a 24 F2.8 Superwide II that could not be upgraded. They worked on the D60 though and the 24 F2.8 was an excellent piece of glass for $60.00. I was sorry to see it go.

Anyway, if you have a non HSM or EX series lens, the odds of being able to get it rechipped is slim if it is over a couple of years old. The two I had upgraded were a less than one year old 28mm F2.8 and a 400mm F5.6 HSM TeleMacro.

My lens was purchased in 1988 when I purchased my EOS-630. The lens has been flawless and like a good buddy to me. I hate to see it go. I feer that the additional lens expense might force me to drop back to the Rebel to allow for purchasing a longer lens.

If your old faithful Sigma lens starts behaving erraticly on the new body, then you can pretty much be sure it is the lens' chip that needs replacing.

You'll ususally get an err99. There may be others, but the camera will give you an error the the lens won't change aperture, if it functions at all. The 28 F2.8 didn't function (received the err99) and the 400 only worked wide open. The best thing to do is call sigma service if you're having a problem with a lens on a new camera body and they can tell you if it needs to be rechipped, or can be rechipped.

Michael,

You are better off to call them. Their email response is lacking. I sent them an email informing them they had shipped someone elses lens to me and they never responded to the email (sent it once per day for three days). Ended up calling them.
