Fill flash maybe? Although I like using it for outdoor portraits, it does tend to make the skin colours slightly different. Also, the photos were taken in the evening, when the light can change within seconds.

Here is another pic, taken at about the same time in the evening but totally different lighting conditions (overcast sky). Different colours here too:

I like this shot alot, except for the excessive lipstick. On the
other hand, maybe that's part of what makes this particular girl
herself.
-
Hahahaha, Victor, she's only 9 years old! She doesn't wear
lipstick....that's just her natural self.
If you have a look at "Summer Sky" it's the exact same kid...the
shots were taken just minutes apart....and she has the exact same
colour lips in that one too. Definitely no lipstick....I'm her mum
and I wouldn't allow it.

Hi, Roberta, the Fuji forum runs with anonymous entries.
It would be much easier than their system to set up.
I envisage everyone submitting an entry and maybe taking a number.
the trust system would have to be applied at the end of the challenge.
Woops ! dinner calls i will finish this later .
nic,
I agree with your idea of having anonymous entries. Do you know of
any challenges that have a format for anonymous entries? I'd like
the names attached after the voting. It would be very interesting
to vote on the images without knowing who created them. Just like
the teachers who graded the papers without knowing who wrote the
piece until after the evaluation was complete. I think there is
something to be said for this format.

At work, we participate in architectural contests quite often. These are usually done anonymously. Here's how it is done: A number of our own choice is put on the submitted material. An envelope containing the translation between the number and our identity is sent to a third party. Applied to these challenges, it could be done like this:

For each image submitted the submitter chooses a unique number as an ID. This number and "real" ID is emailed to the host. Host reveals the real identities after voting.

I would take you to task there Karl.
The gallery should not be called Exhibition in the first place.
It should be called Open because that is exactly what it is.
And by definition it should be harder to win than the Eligible.

Also it is meant for those who do not want to host the next challenge and I personally would limit the entries to a similar time frame as the Eligible!
Challenge Length:
I think this challenge was too long.

Voting Period:
When the challenge is done, for two days. weekends or not doesn't
bother me.

After putting these together, it came to my attention that I had
picked three Alekas pics. shrugs Wasn't really expecting to
keep picking out ones by the same person :)

I am sure some simple method could be worked out.

it definately would not mean every entry having to bombard the convenor with emails but it would mean at the end of the challenge that the place getters would have to submitt their I.D. via email address and I am sure that any disputes regarding whom owns what could be sorted out quite quickly .I would reckon the best way could be to have the original complete with details sent to the convenor.

lets face it most images go through some processing, so submitting the original would not be that difficult?

ELIGIBLE:

4 pts Homeless..... by Vikas ( http://www.pbase.com/image/25480409 )
  • I am really impressed with your work in general and this portrait
in particular. Life has had its toll on this man, but he still has
his pride and humor. It is all there for me to read in his face!
Technically top-notch, as always from you.

2 pts Blue Me by j trujillo ( http://www.pbase.com/image/25022179 )
  • Technically top-notch. Perfect compositon, dramatic lighting,
amazing for a self-portrait!

2 pts My Beauty by Robert Bruce ( http://www.pbase.com/image/25098102 )
  • My judgment on this is probably affected by the beauty of your
beauty, but I like this one a lot. The colorful scarf adds
personality to the subject. Nice use of empty space.

2 pts Peek by Angela Johnson ( http://www.pbase.com/image/25181474 )
  • In my comments I said that, as a portrait, I liked "Shy" better,
but I have changed my mind, this one has more character! Still
think this one is the one that should have been entitled "Shy".

Yeah, I thought about that too, after I had posted above. Maybe a unique number for each participant (instead of each photo), and maybe only the eligible gallery needs to be anonymous?

What about the comments though? Would they have to remain anonymous as well? At least if the submitter replies to comments on his/her photos, it would have to be anonymously.

Hmm, I don't know what to think of this anonymous stuff...

Can I be 007? Can I? Can I?

Seriously though, I'd love to see anonymous entries. It makes the playing field a bit more level....and I have a theory.

My theory is that the "better known" photographers (for want of a better term) get more attention simply by putting their name in the title. It makes one click on the thumbnail for a closer look, whereas the newcomers or lesser known people may simply get a passing glance and a lot of the time, the thumbnail doesn't do justice to the bigger picture.

Also, I think comments left may be more honest and maybe more constructive. So far I have refrained from leaving any comments in this challenge, although I am a "super-comment maker" in the CTF challenge.

The reason being is that I am very new to SLR photography and don't feel I have a lot to offer those who have more experince than me. Maybe if I didn't know who took the photo, I would be more inclined to comment.

One more thought.....it might very well make those who have a definite style, step outside the square and develop in different areas, just to keep the rest of us guessing! (And some of us are gonna have to find different kids to photograph!)

We didn't have time to look at many of the pics. in detail, so have voted based on the thumbnails. I know this isn't fair, since many photos have fine detail that isn't seen in the thumbnails. Our shortlist had at least 20 in it, and many more great photos left out.

http://DPChallenge.com

All entries are anonymous and are revealed when voting is completed. Their website was designed that way.

If the CSLR Challenge wants anonymous entries perhaps the best solution is a dedicated hosting/voting site that can handle it. Does one exist now? Not to my knowledge.

BTW, the more I'm involved with the challenges the more I feel that anonymous entries is deisrable.

I don't get this. As long as voting for each gallery is separate, each is just as easy to win. Odds of winning are a function of how many entries there are, statistically, and it's not obvious which gallery will tend to get more entries.

Perhaps you mean the Exhibition gallery is harder to win because any picture in the Eligible gallery could also be in the Exhibition gallery. I'd counter that just because it could doesn't mean it is.

Or maybe I just missed the point.

I hate to cut off the discussion, but the Voting Thread is rapidly getting filled with non-voting posts. We are rapidly approaching 150 posts, and we need to reserve room for remaining votes and any related follow-ups (e.g. clarifying questions from me, incorrect votes, etc). I ask that this discussion be taken to a different thread.

Thanks,
Joe

I hate to cut off the lines of discussion, but the Voting Thread is rapidly getting filled with non-voting posts. We are swiftly approaching 150 posts, and we need to reserve room for remaining votes and any related follow-ups (e.g. clarifying questions from me, incorrect votes, etc). I ask that tangential discussions and 1:1 comments (e.g. thanks) be taken to another thread or another vehicle (e.g. email).

Again, I hate to cut off reasonable dialogue, but the thread is filling up and this is making it very difficult for me (and Denise Wall, my friendly auditor) to track in-bound votes.

Thanks,
Joe
