I'd like to thank the participants of Challenge 7, "Portraits", for
a compelling set of images. Strong participation, a lot of new
names, great work by all. Voting starts now and closes in two days
(23:59 GMT ~ 6:59PM EST on Thursday). I will post the results an
hour thereafter. Click here to see the Close of Voting time for

Before voting, I beg your indulgence and seek your input. With
this iteration, I use the voting thread to get community input on
two points having to do with the timeframes for Challenges. The
questions should be self-explanatory. The Challenge 7 voting rules
appear in the section thereafter...

REFERENDUM

In some respects, the last two Challenges have seemed to drag on a
bit. At the same time, both have seen a surge of entries in the
closing days. A balance to strike, so, your thoughts....

(a) How long should a Challenge run? [Pick just one , your
"sweet-spot"]...
1. Cross two (2) weekends
2. Run two (2) full weeks
3. Cross three (3) weekends
4. Even longer

(b) Is it OK if the Voting Thread overlaps (starts or ends during)
the weekend?
1. Nope
2. Yep

Subsequent hosts will still determine the schedules. I'll just
tally your feedback and make it known to those that follow.

stuff in both, so please make the time.
  • You may vote for a maximum of 5 photos in each gallery, and you
have 10 points to use per gallery. Maximum points allowed per photo
is 5.
  • You do not need to award all 10 points, but you will likely

I think this is a bad idea if your goal is to learn. Chess players and pool players try to play against people better than them. That's how they learn. I think the same applies to photography. Furthermore, if you eliminate the best to make a chance for winning easier, that lessens the value of a win.
I think it's clear that there are some photographers who are a cut
above the rest here - shutter, iso3200, Joe reilly.

What I propose is that those people who win the eligibile
competition get promoted to an Elite competition - and the rest of
us less capable ( ;) ) photographers can bounce around in the
eligible competition. Hopefully there'll be enough supply of Fresh
Meat to keep the eligible competition going.

What do you think ?

As for the referendum -

A(1) Two weekends
B(2) Yes, as long as some working days are included.

This is the way I like it also... give two weekends but moves at a quicker pace than two full weeks. Ann
Challenges start on a Thursday. They run until Monday night after
the 2nd weekend (ie about 11 days), when voting will start. Voting
ends Wednesday night, when the votes are tallied and the winner has

Eligible:

Peek - Angela Johnson: 5 points (Just great eye contact and wonderful tones)

Profile with Grass Mat - Julio Trujillo: 3 points (Creative sandwiching, lovely texture)

Cold Thing - Jim Fuglestad: 2 points (Simple & effective)

Exhibition:

Professor Hirschberg - Paul Teixeira: 3 points (Great caricaturish style, so apropos!)

Fons Rademakers Dutch film director - Paul Teixeira: 3 points (Great film noir style, also apropos! :-) )

taz - John Brain: 2 points (Wonderful lighting)

Goggle Boy - Lonnit: 2 points (High impact headshot)

Too many to choose from.... my brain hurts.........

I like your scheme, but I'd have a hard time getting voting done unless there was a weekend day. Maybe I spend too much time voting, but I really don't see how it's possible not to spend a significant amount of time voting and be fair to all the entries. Supposing I spend 1/2 minute on each entry. It would take over 3 hours to get through all the entries this time round.
The way I'd do it....and this is just my opinion. If this is how
it's running now...I haven't been keeping a detailed track so
forgive me...but yes the past two have seemed to drag a bit.

Challenges start on a Thursday. They run until Monday night after

I agree with that... so instead, why don't we eliminate the Photographers name from the entries?

While some have a definite style, many do not. I'm not saying people are biased, but this would eliminate the risk.

Obviously, that causes problems announcing the winner - but each entrant could mail the host with the names of their entries as and when (means the host can't vote though).

Just a thought...
Phil

No votes this time,to many entries, all the same and not too many really taking any notice of the guidlines presented.

if this had been for straight out portraits then many would have got my votes but take out those entries and you would not be left with too many in the galleries.

As for the referendum......challengers run over two weekends would make it more interesting that gets my vote,i have no thoughts on the voting except to say that the sooner we can get to anonymous entries the better.

Again, thanks to the participants and to the folks who take time to
view the galleries and post their comments/votes. It has been an
honor and a privilege to host Challenge 7. While I will miss my
Challenge 7 "pen pals" ( sMiLe ), I must confess that I am ready to
pass the baton.

Thanks,
Joe
