Once again! Please Phil, split this forum..

Now that the D70 will shortly hit the streets and the D2X is going
to be announced very soon, I think it's high time to split this
forum into two seperate forums: D1/D2 series forum and
D100/D70/D100X(whatever?) forum. It's not the first time I'm
raizing this appeal to Phil Askey but IMHO now is the time. What do
you think?
Out of 122 responses to this thread there are only 75 individuals that have given their opinion, of which there is no unanimous concesus to split this forum.

It makes one wonder how many hits this forum receives in a week from other individuals that won't care to comment or even read this thread, and what percentile of all visitors to this forum the respondents to this thread really represents.

I'm always interested in new technology, Rick, and there isn't a
hobbyist alive who hasn't wondered if better gear might improve
their work.
ok Frank, I guess you are going back on your promise that the 5700 is the best camera ever made. Just wanted to check.

As for whatever galleries you are referring to, just so you know genius, I hardley ever use PBASE for anything jackass. Therefore, you've never even seen my work, oh brilliant one. You should have learned in detective school about gets the facts straight, which you thought you were doing. You'd probably end up sending innocent ppl to jail based on your cracker-jack style of investigation. Frank, you are predictable as always. Never seems to amaze me. hmmm....It's not you you kicked my dog or anything...

BTW: Perhaps you can tell my customers that pay for my prints all of your widsom and foresight...IDIOT!...I'd suggest that you stop playing detective and stick to creating tutorials.

Is the D70 starting to temp you suddendly?

notion. Thanks for helping me save some money.

lets have a seperate forum for "thebear" and all his moaning friends. What a load of rubbish. Just don't read or reply to threads that don't interest you. How hard is that???

I am sure that there will be some new D70 owners who
we can help.

If you look at this forum today
How many questions do you see
On
D1
D1H
D2H
D100
D2H

Very few

We do see a lot of pictures taken by Nikon DSFR bodies.
And the method of taking these pictures.

So for the good af all.

NO split

If there is a split it should be done by adding a "Nikon SLR PRO Talk" That is a more fair option, as there are many Pros that are using D100's and I am sure that there will be Pro's that will want to use D70's as a back up or as a step up to the next gen DSLR's. Lets not seperate people because of there equipment choice, but lets give an option for expanding the Nikon chat in a positive way.

If the forum is split, I for one will post on whichever one is of interest to meat any given moment. And screw any ego centric "pro" if he or she doesn't like it.

What is sorely needed here, and long overdue, is a page where all of the most repetitive questions would be answered, without an individuals having to make many posts to get. This suggestion alone (not mine originally), would quiet the critics, and without a doubt, immensely streamline the board. Of course, the SLR Pro forum would have very very little traffic on it, and would largely go unnoticed. All of these talk forums really need an FAQ page! I'm sure that many here would be more than willing to make their contribution to it.

The Nikon forum has tried something like this, where people pulled together some of the best tutorials and threads, because there are an awful lot of things that anyone with a new digital SLR in hand wonders about, no matter which one they bought. Comes to mind:

Sensor cleaning
white balance
capture vs adobe raw
getting the exposure right
what is hardwired and what isn't if you pick raw
curves, what you gain and what you give up
lens choices and what seem to be the variables
noise suppression
uprezzing images

Folks I know who've switched Canon to Nikon, or Nikon to Canon, have even felt that they needed to relearn stuff like this, or at least be reassured that what they know still applies. It wouldn't stop people asking (as someone who's taught a lot of different subjects in my life, I completely believe that the only dumb question is an unasked question), but would be a good shortcut for replies - "Check here, most of your issues are likely to be answered..."

Search function doesn't do that well here. We're crushing Phil's servers, search often returns a "can't execute" reply, and you don't often find the best thread without patience.

Hmmm. Would we be negatively impacting Thom's business? I hope not, we all benefit by someone that dedicated and smart pushing on inquiries.

Having watched opinions on topics swing wildly back and forth in the time i've been around here, I'm also certain that there'll be new things come up.

Make pictures, don't take them - it leaves more for others.

May I add:
soft images
AF quirks
flash quirks
sharpening

IMHO we would need an editor to put this together.

Maybe Phil could allow the 'editor' exclusive use, for a specific time each day, of the search facility to build up the data base.
Just an idea!

This is definately something that would help immensely on pretty much all of the fora here. Naturally, the big issue with FAQ pages would be that it is something that would require continuous work that Phil doesn't have at the time. This is why I originally figured that the forum split made more sense, as it is something that wouldn't need to be maintained - you just do it and the users can do the rest.

If Phil is open to allowing others to assist him in maintaining FAQs it would go a likely be possible - I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would be willing to help. The problem is that in the current setup it seems that Phil and his wife pretty well run everything on their own - thus adding in authentication and security for such a system could be a substantial task in and of itself. Running a system where you implicitly trust all of your staff is a lot more difficult than running a system with staff that need variable levels of access to the system ;)

If such a system was practical though I think it would do a lot for these fora - the search system is considerably overtaxed and usually doesn't work, so it is sometimes very difficult to find information even when it is plentiful. It would be a significant advantage to new users, veteran users and the site's servers alike - especially at this point, where a new low-priced camera is on the near horizon and is just about to bring many new users into our fold ;)

Naturally, however, this is up to Phil so he's the only one that can really respond with the practicality of implementing something like this. Hopefully he isn't sick of these threads and isn't just ignoring it ;)

I was just needling you for borrowing "my suggestion" (which I'm sure I stole from someone else) about putting camera IDs in subject lines.

I don't have any standing on the slr forum, but having gone through a painful thread split on the NTF, I hope your suggestion is given serious consideration, and that you guys manage to keep this fine forum intact. The common bonds of being Nikon dslr users and avid photo-hobbyists would seem to be more meaningful than the differences in build quality of the cameras.
