Hi all,

I need a new digital camera which will be used primarily for taking closeups. I can either pick up a 995 in 'like new' condition for a very reasonable price or spend under $500 on a new camera (like the 4300)... Any ideas on which way I should go?

Thanks in advance,
Arjay.

I've seen some awesome closeups posted here from the 4500. Troll through pbase, and you'll see some 4500 close up stuff:

The 995 is also excellent for closeups IMHO, as is the 990, though I don't have one. I've seen great macros from both (and the 4500), too.

The 4300 is easier to use, but the 995 is a lot more camera, and particularly good at macros. I've upgraded to the 5700, but still use the 995 for very close work.

All Coolpixes are very good for close-up, but 995 IS the best.

Not the best you can do with it!

Best choice for close-up
990, 995 and 4500.

990 has flash on one side
995 and 4500 have pop-up flash

900 and 995 have 3.34 megapixels
4500 has 4 megapixels

That's sad, they do not made any more. Still plently used 990/995 at ebay/other forum or refurb 4500 at Nikon's website (better than ebay)

Because I viewed all the really great close ups on this site I was encouraged to purchase one of my own 5700's. How do you people get such great close up shots? You must be using the manual mode. Right?
Thanks, Meal.

How close? I use a nikon 4500. With a Raynox 4x Macro Lens on a 4500, we are talking low power microscope images. This shot is not super closeup (about 2 in.) with 4500; hand held:

I'm looking for a good macro Dcam.

Are you saying that the cp4500 will be difficult to use ? In which way?

I would like to get one, perhaps from Nikon Mall.(if & when they get them in again)

The best Coolpix current model for close-up is the 4500. The best ones are 990, 995 and 4500. The 995 and 4500 do not have much difference in terms of close-up photography. The 995 and 4500 provide you with a swivel body which is a very important factor when shooting in low or even ground positions. This design is much better than the swivel LCD design in terms of usability. The 4500 is a bit sharper than the 5700, and has a higher magnification without accessories. If you can pick up a like-new 995, go for it.

Are you saying that the cp4500 will be difficult to use ?
No, both the 4500 and the 4300 are new generation cameras that come with scenes mode selections. That makes them easy to use for new Coolpix owners. The 995 doesn't have scenes modes, and is more difficult to use at first.
