Feeler: moving from Nikon to Canon

People switch camps all the time, why bother to know?
Because I am myself currently considering both Nikon and Canon systems. I care. You don't. Thank you for your valuable contribution to the forum, your message really helped me and others in the same situation I'm sure.

I found a camera store that had both the d100 and the 10d in stock. They were kind enough to let me bring in 2 cards and check each camera with the standard rccomended lens.

Both cameras were tested in their respective default settings. I shot the same photos with each camera.. mixed outdoors, shade outdoors, close up peopl and heavy backlighting.

Upon bringing back the cards I loaded them both into the computer and I new just from the thumbnails that is was going to be the Nikon.

After enlarging the images on the computer I was certain that the nikon won hands down!!

There are plenty of threads on this forum that can and will help you in deciding whether to buy Canon or Nikon. What people object to are those individuals who post a thread trying to sell gear which is agains the forum rules and or simply state that they are switiching to Canon.

Hey, whether you choose Canon or Nikon is your choice. Just don't try to be something you are not. This is not a forum to sell gear.

I was asking for one persons' view on his reasons for switching. I haven't found a thread yet that covers the OP's thinking. But then again, I haven't read all threads.

If you have a link to any thread that could help me deciside between Canon and Nikon I would certainly appreciate the information.

People objecting to the OP trying to sell stuff should reply to his message, not mine. I want to find out his reasons for choosing Canon over Nikon.

If it is not already obvious: I'm not trying to sell gear.

He's selling his D1X and D100.

He says the D1X was used for 3500 shots, the D100 for 1000 shots, so I think he finally realizes a Canon Powershot A60 will do for him :)

I am considering a move to Canon.
It would be interesting to know the reasoning behind your decision,
would you care to elaborate?

My reason for switching is that I would like to use 11 megapixels to print larger (11x14 and above) prints. My D1X is 5.74 megapixels. It does appear that Canon is father ahead than Nikon on the digital front. I don't want to start or contribute to a religious war here, I am just answering a question.

I can't post a "for sale" on this site, but I have a feeler posted
on http://www.robgalbraith.com in the trading post section for my D1X,
D100, 9 lenses and a flash. I am considering a move to Canon.

So will you dump your new Canon gear if/when Nikon releases a higher MP camera later this year?

Btw, you don't need more MP to produce 11x14 prints and larger.

It's a shame you don't want to break up the package of gear - you've got a few lenses I would be glad to scope up very quickly.

Hi,

I really, really needed AFS equipped prime lenses at 200mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.8 or faster. Nikon has steadfastly refused to produce these. Canon does. So, I switched from a D1H/D1X pair to a 1D. Eventually, I'll add a 1Ds to the Canon kit, probably after they come out with a replacement and the used market picks up.

For those of you that don't care about why someone that shot Nikon for over 20 years would switch, just don't bother to read this message. ;)

I hope your new gear works out well for you.

I'm getting great 11x14's and 13x19's from my 4MP D2H.

I've been so busy lately producing output for pay that haven't hardly had time to post.

Hi Brad

I guess I was in pretty much the same position as you - I shoot mainly landscapes, and the resolution on the D100 and D1X just weren't up to it.

I thought about moving to Canon, but it was a big amount of money to cough up, a huge amount of weight to carry arround, and I'm used to Nikon into the bargain.

After much fiddle assing about, I bought a Kodak 14n - it isn't the 'all purpose' camera you might want, but for Landscape and studio work it's wonderful.

It isn't the easiest camera to use - especially for low light work, but for ISO 80-200, it really sings, and to my eyes both the colour and resolution have a march on the 1DS in good light.

If I want to shoot at high ISO, or any kind of action, I still have my D1X and D100, but for most stuff the Kodak really does the trick.

One of the other joys is that lenses which really weren't up to par on the D100 seem to miraculously be wonderful on the 14n - the Nikkor 24-120 VR AFS is a case in point - I'd pretty much relegated it to my storage bag before I bought the Kodak, now it's on the camera most of the time.

Prices have dropped as well - someone on the Kodak SLR forum seems to have found one for $3000 - almost worth trying out before spending all that money on a changeover.

It isn't for everything, but in those moments when you really DO want the resolution, it does come up with the goods - over and over.

kind regards

Wait until after PMA. Rumours are that Fuji is coming out with a FF 11 megapixel DSLR. It might be even (a lot) less expensive than the 1Ds. The only thing that is not attractive is that they double up the pixels and make huge (22 mp) files. PMA is in Feb.

Jono,

Thanks for the thoughtful message. I have indeed tried the 14n. I couldn't get past the ergonomics of the camera. It just never felt right in my hands. C'est la vie.
