I happen to have three 2X TC's at this moment: Sigma 2X (brand new), Canon 2X I (like new) and Canon 2X (brand new). So what else is better than comparing them. Here's the typical result after several rounds of testing (pardon the purple blooming):

For Ultimate image quality, especially in the corners, Canon 2X II is the way to go. The ever slightly sharper performance may be worth the money for some perfectionists.

Thanks.
How this combo (200L + TC2x) improves stopped down to F/8 and F/11?

There's no need to. Those are untouched 100% crops from 150 feet away. Try doing a little USM on them, they're so sharp that they'll hurt your eyes, especially the crop from the EF 2X II.

Wow, that 200/2.8 + 2x tc II combo looks awfully good. Makes me want to get another 200/2.8. Is that the Mk. 1 or Mk. 2 200/2.8? Could you post the uncropped images, just to compare the corners and overall contrast, etc? Thanks!

Brian,

I have read here that the Canon TC's slow down the focusing speed and the Sigma shows no apparent difference.

Did you observe any differences ?

I'm not saying they aren't sharp.

Guess im glad i bought a new mark II instead of getting a used MK I and saving $75. Honestly not a huge difference and in real world shooting I dont think you'd tell, but at least when i upgrade to a body with a lesser crop factor (hopefully) that extra corner performance should really matter more

Which are you keeping ?

It may be a little off topic but on other pages you show a Tamron 1.4x and a Canon 1.4x. Tamron looks soft, how does the Sigma compare?(If you have one). Sigma and Canon I look very close in the 2X. I have the 1.4x Sigma. It's kinda still on topic just the 1.4x.

I have both Canon & Sigma TC. I use them on my 135 L and 300 f/4IS lenses. I can't notice any difference in speed between them. If the Canon slows down the speed it must be so little that you can't notice it.

I have the Sigma & Canon 1,4x TC. I use them both on my 135 L and 300 f/4 IS lenses. I think that they are very close in quality. Maybe the Canon has slighly better colors and is a little bit sharper in the corners. But they are very close.

The instruction sheet that comes with the Canon 2X notes that it will slow down the focus speed.

Lars
Lars, how are you able to use AF with the 2x TC and 300f/4? doesn't that combo essentially eliminate AF altogether? According to Canon's spec sheets it does..
