70-200 f2.8S + Z 2x TC samples

I was contemplating splashing out for a 600 F4 FL lens, but seeing these shots made me reconsider. If the 70-200 works that well with the new TC´s, how well will the new Z telephotos work with it!

God the wait is killing me.

Well, there is a lot more to it than just sheer sharpness. The 600 f4E FL will have better AF, being able to shoot at f4, nice bokeh and as good as the shaprness is shown here with this combo, the 600 would be sharper for sure. But then there is a price and weight penalty! :-)

I would think the new Z mount zooms like the 100-400 should be better than the 70-200 f2.8S + 2x TC for AFing, bokeh and edge to edge sharpness, CA etc. But this combo is a great way to 400 if you want the added benefit of being able to shoot the 70-200 f2.8S bare and having f2.8 at your disposal. As with everything, there are benefits and drawbacks! :-)

The first tiger shot is amazing! Congrats.

Hi how does image quality differ when used in dx mode with 2x tc
I would say, no difference with the same shot in FX. Unless you want to produce a very large print.

The DX part of the FX frame might be abit sharper at the edges. See Ricci's 70-200 mm and TC lenstest videos. He did not actually try DX of course.

Never tried myself, I rather use the wider view to find my subject easier. Crop later, as needed.

But that tigershot of Lance was great!

Certainly Lance’s examples with Z TC 2x look good, but now question is whether to wait for the Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 to become more readily available and potentially get a TC 1.4x for both lenses instead? More money, but better optical performance all the way from 70mm out to 560mm! 😊

Exactly.

The 100-400mm range can also be extended with a 1.4x or 2x but then the same question will be posed about the 200-600mm as being a better option. Etc etc

Thank you kind Sir! :-)

Thank you very much, RMcL!

It will be indeed interesting. From the small test Ricci did between the Z 100-400 f4.5-5.6S compared to the F 180-400 f4 VR, it would seem that the 100-400 *should* be better than the Z 70-200 f2.8S + Z 2x TC.

The 100-400 is great for larger animals, larger birds and the perfect zoo lens.
