Capture One WB

The list of settings in C1 RAW are straight from teh camera. If you read that thread awhile ago by the fellow who wrote a little PERL script to get all the EXIF info from a RAW file, you can see that the camera actually records all of the settings for WB for all of the different WB modes right into the RAW file. When you select one of them in C1 all it is doing is reading what the camera put there and dutifully applying the settings to the shot. So if you don't like the auto setting then it's the camera that had a problem figuring it out - C1 is just doing what the camera says to do.

What's so nice about it is that you can forget about WB while you're shooting and figure it out after the fact. Just leave your camera on auto all the time, as long as you shoot in RAW.

N
I'm still not sure what everyone sees in C1 - have you ever tried
hitting the auto WB button? It either turns everyting dark orange,
or dark blue.

I think David was refering to the C1 specific auto-WB option which is different from the camera Auto WB setting. Its easy to confuse the two.

And yes I agree that the C1 auto WB seems to always give very poor results. At least it is different than the Canon Auto ;) Perhaps knowing what this algorthym is trying to do will make it more beneficial. A note to Mr. Tapes would probably help clarify what it is for or if improvements are planned.

But this is no way diminishes the overall C1 Rebel package. Once I used RAW and C1 I could not go back to jpeg. I find the flexibility and workflow so much more efficient. I just wish one could save multipe setting for an image and switch between them and default easily.

I have no problem going back to the as shot settings for WB.

For exposure set EC and CC to 0 and make sure there are no levels or curves adjustment. These are not really 'as shot settings', but C1 default.

Not really sure what you mean by can't get back to the original RAW. I can easily get back to as shot WB and C1 default exposure (and focus) settings.

I agree its not so easy to switch between different variations.

But overall I suggest you post to the C1 Rebel discussion boards. Mr. Tapes seems to be very responsive and also seems to be intersted in inputs to improve the software.

I just wish there was a way to flip back and forth between my C1
modified image and the original RAW. It seems however that once
you make a bunch of modifications in C1, you can't get back the
original RAW!

I think almost all of the settings have the little "X" box that reverts to shot settings... but no, there isn't anything like the preview mode in PS where you can flick it on and off repeatedly and examine your changes.

Remember...C1 does not modify the original RAW file. You can adust settings and it will output a tiff or a jpeg but it will NEVER change the original file. ;)

The only thing I wish C1 had was different sharpness settings that you can set and choose from, I hate setting every single photo seperatly.
