Is 8 MP enough for you?

I had fun comparing two 8 MP cameras with each other.

To be exact between

My Olympus E-300 (2004) with 8M and my little iPhone 5s (2013) also with 8MP

I would like to have your opinion on this rather unusual comparison.

Interesting comparison. I prefer the images from the E-300, mostly for color and contrast. Possibly slightly sharper when studying details.

The iPhone does reasonably well.

I wonder how the images would look if prints were made from each.

Nothing could be simpler, you download the photos “original size” and print them at home. 😁

Hurry before all the leaves have fallen 😂

Olympus E-300 (2004) 100% / iPhone 5s (2013) 100%
Olympus E-300 (2004) 100% / iPhone 5s (2013) 100%
I think the Olympus takes the prize for this one, too.

What's your opinion between the two?

In 2013, smartphones were not yet perceived as a threat to the photography industry.

But the performances were beginning to be felt.

In my eyes, this little iPhone 5s suggested a bright future for future generations.

We know the rest...

I color-corrected both images using the same location, and lightened shadows on the iPhone image to match the E-300. I don't know the actual shade of those dried leaves, but the E-300 (LHS) shows a redder hue.

The iPhone has better resolution.

All in all, not much difference. But if I had to choose one of these for a photo-walk, I would take the iPhone.

Interesting, but photo editing with modern software is another story.

The number one advantage of this iPhone is its small size, it's a shame that Apple stopped producing them.

But the big disadvantage for me is that I don't enjoy taking photos with a smartphone, the pleasure of photography is absent!

I agree with you - I'd much rather use a "real" camera.

But there are times...

 iPhone image. 0.9 sec f/1.6 iso 2000

This comet (from last year about this date) was barely visible with the naked eye. But bracing my iPhone against the deck railing, I got this.

Very nice photo 😎

I'm having a little trouble finding my way around this new version of the Forum 😵‍💫
