Thank you Melanie for hosting this challenge. You picked an interesting topic, and did a great job of hosting. Bravo!

Thank you everyone else for participating. There were many really great entries. It always amazes me how many interesting ways people find to interpret any given theme.

Here are my votes:

Eligible Gallery:

4 Pts "747 Thousandths" by Stonefinger - This is a great
composition. I especially like the lighting and great depth of field.
I am in the inspection equipment business, so micrometers are
a familiar sight to me (although not typically as old as yours).

3 Pts "Seeing the Details" by Chris_S - This is a nice composition
with the glasses perfectly placed to ephasize the theme.

3 Pts "art deco in the sky" by andy - I really like the perspective and
lighting.

3 Pts "Conservatory Reflections" by Michael Puff - The lilly pads and the
reflections of the windows make an interesting composition.

3 Pts "A Shaft of Detail" by MFC - The clear detail, lighting, and
composition are wonderful. I've tried macros of feathers myself,
and I had problems getting the web vanes to appear in focus.

Exhibition Gallery:

4 Pts "Reflection" by Bev Brink - This is an outstanding abstract photo
with great color and composition.

3 Pts "Panes in the Glass" by Fremiet - This is a subject that few people
would recognize as a potentially great photo opportunity.

2 Pts "Empty Chairs" by Ann Chaikin - This photo kept my eyes busy for
a while examining the various details.

2 Pts "Ice Nine" by Dave McMillan - An interesting composition of
ice, gravel, and light.

2 Pts "Details from the Shadows" by Bev Brink - I really like the lighting
and rich color of the horse.

2 Pts "Adobe Home" by Bobby Tan - I really like the photo's
composition and the color of the adobe.

1 Pt "Counting the Rings" by Ann Chaikin - I really like the concentric
ripples and the composition of the sky and tree reflections.

Thanks, Melanie, I think you did such a great job with this challenge! I enjoyed reading all your comments too. I'll do Exhibition votes for now, Eligible will follow...

This gallery was very hard for me to award points to...I reviewed it many times. I left comments on many of the photos that really impacted me...and I really enjoyed MANY more than I can award my points to. Nice photos everyone.

Exhibition:
4_ Reflection by Bev Brink

Bev, this caught my eye as soon as I saw it. I liked the artistic nature of it. Beautiful, colorful, gently-rippled water pattern. Very clear..and wonderfully abstract. Something I may not have "seen" myself. I really liked it every time I looked at it...over and over again.
2_ Ugly detail by Arn

Arn, I'm not the biggest fan of flies myself; but I sure liked so much about this photo and capture...the lovely tones, the full frame interest to me, the lighting, the DOF, the main subject clarity, etc. A lot of what I liked is simply intangible...an artistic appeal to me again, I guess. I just know I liked it :)

So many more to like...here are just ten of them:
1_ Empty Chairs by Ann Chaikin
1_ Ceiling by Sweetchops
1_ Evil Detail by Klaus Wiese

Again, Melanie, great job hosting. I had fun & really enjoyed your challenge theme...I appreciate all your time & effort. Very nice photos in this gallery too IMO. I tried to comment in the gallery on all the ones that I especially liked...they're all HMs to me.

Eligible:
4_ Daily Prayer Book by Keith T.

Keith, your subject and capture really caught my eye. I especially liked the golden metallic sheen and large amount of detail here. I made my way all around the cover's border and within the center to inspect all the detailed "relief" there. I thought the lighting/color combination was very beautiful...captivating. It's a still subject I would have really enjoyed trying to capture, but I couldn't have improved on your rendition of it. Perfect crop too.

2_ Conservatory Reflections by Michael Puff

This image appealed to me similarly to Bev's in the Exhibition gallery. Here too I really enjoyed the artistic nature of your capture. The deep color and reflective pattern of the water made a great juxtaposition to the green leaves and pink bloom. I thought it was well composed and well "seen"...a beautiful "semi-abstract".

2_ staples by Katherine Kenison

I really liked your "constructed" creation here, Katherine. I especially liked how the simple patterns repeated in layers. The perfect lighting, clarity, and effective shadows made this photo very attractive for me to stare at. I thought it was well conceived and captured.

Also, 8 more of the many more I really enjoyed:

1_ art deco in the sky by andy (The interesting spire detail set against a beautiful blue sky at an effective angle)

1_ Dipping into aurora by Shay (the wonderful capture of a unique celestial/lighting event I'd never witnessed...nice constellation detail too)

1_ "747 Thousandths" by Stonefinger (excellent clarity, lighting, and composition...a unique subject to measure precise detail )

1_ Ottoman Detail by Helen Betts (rich lighting and color to compliment the unique & interesting medallion...seemed like a museum piece)

1_ Ki-Yoo by Fremiet (great idea from several perspectives about capturing detail...creative vision)

1_ A Lone Turkey Feather details by NC (moody color and lighting...nice capture of delicate detail in the down)

1_ Crystals in Morning Light by Michael Klemmer (the creation of the pattern was as captivating to me as the beautiful capture itself...lovely abstract)

1_ Prints by Bev Brink (beautiful lighting, color, and clarity...interesting subject that felt somewhat surreal & mysterious to me)

Also. I sincerely enjoyed the photos and learned something from everyone else in this gallery who "took the challenge": Melanie, Amy M., TassieD, Simon B., Jeff K., Paulo G., Harry B., Brendan O'., Bill B., LanceD, Chris_S, Alec E., xsdg, Greg Z., Dave V., Ric S., steward84, Arvin C., Michael B., and Brett M.

melanie, a great challenge - well run - and of course very fun! i had a ball shooting my "details" - this time, i made sure to stretch myself. thanks to all for the comments on my photos - this is what makes stf such a great place, i learn so much every day here. you all help me to become a better photographer! everyone deserves a mention, the entire challenge is filled with incredible photographs.

now - on to the votes!

Eligible

4pts_ Tiny Details 2 by Brendan O'Connor

i was captivated by this series (both 1 and 2). #2, incredibly well lit, composed, sharp detail, an image that really hits me with a feeling: peace, calmness, serenity

3pts_ Prints by Bev Brink

a fantastic capture - the ripples in the sand say to me again, calmness, serentity - but then someone has trod thru them, causing some distress, and left their mark - i love this image

3pts_ Fig Newton by Katherine Keniston

not just because they are on my top 3 all time favorite cookie list;) this is a great closeup - it's well lit, lovely texture and i can feel the "stickyness" when i view the photograph - and that's what capturing the details is all about!

2pts_ Grand Central Lighting by Harry Behret

i was there when he shot this, and i took many shots of the same lighting - but mine didn't come out nearly this well - fantastic capture in a very difficult lighting situation. the fixture's details are very evident, they jump out at you. well done!

2pts_ Oranged by SFishy

a great capture, of an everday object. i think i got wet with oj looking at it! well done.

1pts_ Details Set Asunder by Stonefinger

lovely use of dof and very on target for the challenge.

1pts_ Veins by Harry Behret

i like the quality of this shot, very sharp, the details jump out at me as if i'm holding the leaf. and the composition/crop is excellent, love the diagonal flow from lower left to upper right.

Exhibition

4pts_ Hospital Details by Yuri Pautov

can't imagine how you get a good portrait of someone wearing a surgical mask, but yuri's done it! the lighting and expression is fantastic and this is an oh-so-important detail, the mask! congrats on a fine image, yuri!

3pts_ Ceiling by Sweetchops

i'm mesmerized by this photograph, very well done a pleasant composition of details to view.

3pts_ El detaille imprescindible en los Toros by Doris Baillet

this image speaks volumes to me. incredibly sharp, well composed and lit. it is a cross-cultural masterpiece. congratulations doris on a really, really fine image.

3pts_ Theater. Details. by Yuri Pautov

lovely composition here - the framing of the "subjects" and the lighting.

3pts_ Musical Detail by Helen Betts

another great composition, showing beautifully crafted details. i can hear the music!

Thanks much for your comments. As this was the first challenge I've entered, you have inspired me to further effort . I'll try to live up to your expectations, especially given all the great entries from the crowd. And of course, the fact that you couldn't vote for yourself eliminated a lot of the best competition....
