Anyone tried to fit BG-E2 battery grip to Canon R7?

I don't care about functionality of the controls on the grip: I just need some extension to the camera body so I can actually hold it with more than 3 fingers. I have seen pictures of the R7 with BG-E2 and BG-E2N grips - probably modified, but this is no problem. Canon really dropped the ball on this one...

I’ve been using that plate for some time now - allows my pinky finger to participate

A BG-E2 or similar seems like a lot of extra bulk and weight just for a slightly longer grip. If you have access to a 3D printer there are several designs available for free:

Well those grips don’t fit the R7 and there is no battery connection on an R7. So if you’ve seen them, they must have been heavily modified including cutting off the battery extension. There are some 3D printer designs out there for a dumb grip extension. The lack of a grip for the R7 has been known about since release, it was clearly a design choice rather than a “dropped ball”. Maybe the mk2 will have one, maybe not, personally I don’t want one and I’m very happy with the smaller form factor of the current R7. I’m sure Canon will have done the market research.

I'm certain neither could not be easily modified to be even close. They are pinned for specific xxD DSLRs, not to mention the battery extension that not only would be non-functional but would have to be cut off.

Did a quick search and found a YT video by “Amar Tech” showing how to modify a BG-E2 grip with its battery extension and location pin removed. It actually married up to a R7 body quite nicely, as a dumb grip. So yes it can be done, if you wanted to, for very little cost. Personally I have no need for a bigger grip.

Thanks. This looks OK - certainly better than holding the camera with just 3 fingers.

I still think that Canon made a mistake here...or maybe I am spoiled by my previous cameras - 1V HS, 1D Mk II etc.

This may help:

This company have been around for a while

There's an easy alternative. Just hold it with three fingers. I just checked, and my M6 fits that way, and I had never even noticed it until I just now checked. I used to use it with a 400 mm lens, and even that was fine. I just picked up my R7 with three fingers, and I don't see the problem. Maybe you can just learn to do it.

Your 400mm f/5.6 is light in comparison to the larger wildlife lenses.

Imagine your 400 double the weight

I probably wouldn't carry one of those by the camera grip. But in any case, some people might want to reconsider whether they really need a huge grip. It's just a suggestion, and everyone is free to take it or leave it.
