Hooray! The Z50II has a wired remote control.

It's a new-to-Nikon type, the MC-DC3, but has a big big price. £35 in the UK.

Does anyone know if the standard Canon RS-60E3 will work instead? It's under a tenner, looks the same, and works fine on my Fujifilm camera, so I am hopeful.

Thanks!

if you ever manage to try that Canon one on the Z50ii let us know the outcome. Thanks.

Honestly don't know why Nikon couldn't have kept the older DC2 connector that has been on the Z cameras for years (well, the Z50 and the Z6/Z7 I/II at least). But I guess having the option is better than no option like on the Zf.... which has remote no control port....

I'm sure if you give it some time, Vello may come out with a cheaper remote, if they haven't already.

I found this cable on Amazon that works with my Z50ii and my Vello Freewave plus wireless remote. I wish it was longer but it works.

Is the remote actually in stock? Maybe it's because I'm in Canada, I pre-ordered the cable remote at the beginning of November and in mid February I finally just cancelled and got a bluetooth one.

Well I just got to try the Canon RS-60E3, which also works with Fuji cameras. SO I was hopeful it would work.

But no, the jack plug is bigger than the Canon one. SO I will need to save up for the expensive Nikon one, or find a suitable 3rd party one.

The JJC S-PK1 is the first one I've found. I will keep looking to see what else there is.

I think given some time, companies like Vello may have a solution that isn't expensive, and they might already have something (I haven't checked). I'd actually like to know NIkon's reasoning for changing the DC2 to a DC3 plug.

To me it makes a lot of sense. The DC2 used a specific port on the camera, the DC3 uses the port that is already there anyway.
Yes i guess, but for those who have a DC2 remote it's just another thing to buy. the other thing is that the DC2 port was compatible with other devices besides remotes but I don't think the DC3 port is (such as GPS).

I am using the Vello Freewave plus with the cable I found on Amazon. See post above.
For those yes it will work ,but for people who have the dedicated DC2 connector on their release, they would have to buy a new one (same for people who want to use GPS, which I don't know if there is a cable yet that will work with the GPS units).

The Z50ii requires a 3.5mm 4-pole male connector. The 4th pole tells the camera whether a headphone or remote is connected. The Freewave requires a 2.5mm 3-pole male connector. The only cable I found on Amazon is 10” long. I wish it was longer but it works.
I think you're missing the point. Some wired remotes at least have a built-in DC2 connector, for which you cannot change the connector (it's one piece). For those people, it would mean they'd have to buy another remote. The DC2 has been used as far back as I can remember, at least to cameras like the D750. Now while a new remote isn't the end of the world, some may see this as an annoyance particularly if they own other Z cameras that don't have the DC3 option. And as for those who may want to use GPS, this may rule those out (like the GP1 and GP1A) since those (as far as I know) don't have a compatible connector. The only options for that are DC2 and 10-pin (found on cameras like the Z8/Z9, D850, etc).

Trying to think as Nikon here for a sec:

- GPS can now be aquired with linking snapbridge, you never going to see a GPS device from nikon anymore I guarantee

- DC2 port adds cost+size if the only purpose is to plug in a remote. DC3 going into the headphone jack is quick elegant in my opinion.

- it's a $30 dollar accessory, not the end of the world

I now have a nice simple JJC wired remote that works with the Z50II, including the half-press focussing. It was sold as:

"JJC Camera Wired Remote Shutter Control fr Pentax KP K-70 as Pentax CS-310"

So I guess some Pentax remotes will also work on the Z50II, should you own a Pentax as well as a Nikon.

I think when it comes to these remotes they are pretty simple in operation and cameras likely use very simple commands to focus and operate the shutter. It's when you want to do things like move th focus point where it can be more complicated and may require a specialized remote specifically for the camera. I bought a Vello ShutterBoss from that works with a wide array of cameras from different brands... just have to buy the appropriate cable. (It was actually marketed as for Canon, but i missed that when ordering it as it was a used unit, but i had the proper cable anyway, works fine).

I purchased this cable and as you can see it is quite short. I would describe it as having an effective working length of about 8 inches (20 cm).

working length about 8 inches (20 cm)
working length about 8 inches (20 cm)

Fortunately it is still long enough to allow using a pair of YN RF-603II-N flash triggers as a wireless radio remote shutter release with the Z50II.
