SX720 HS glitch (not fatal)

I love my SX720 HS for extending my zoom range (way) past what my Sony 6000 telephoto can do. But the SX720 suddenly changed a detail without warning: when I'm in playback mode and click the button to close playback, it no longer exits. So the camera seemed paralyzed. I'm lucky enough to have a great pro camera shop just a few miles away, and a guy there had a good work-around -- just press the shutter button, and it exits playback mode. So that's a relief, but can anyone say why the playback mode button no longer exits? And why does the shutter button have this property?

FYI, the pro shop is National Camera in Minnesota.

Whoa! That's a new one.

I have the same camera and haven't encountered that problem yet. I feel your pain. The camera shop pro's tip is brilliant.

What happens when you press the playback button when the camera is off? Does it still show photos?

I presume it does, but then, probably, the camera won't turn off when you press it again as it normally does.

Have you tried the old trick of removing battery and memory card and waiting, say, 10 minutes, then reinstalling?

A better possibility, but make note of your current settings first!

Have you tried resetting the camera? There is a menu choice to do a soft reset (Menu--right tab-- last choice "Reset All". If you rummage the Internet, you may find a button press sequence for a hard reset.

You'd want to make note of your current settings as if you'd have to restore them afterwards. But that's no biggie if you have to do it. Sometimes, I find I discover some setting or tweak I didn't know about.

Keep us posted. I'd like to follow this in case it happens to my favorite camera, one I use regularly!

Thanks -- I'll try those suggestions. Fortunately, the guy's workaround lets me still use the camera.

the playback button exits playback on the older SX240 just fine , maybe they did change it on the 720 ? but the shutter button has always exited playback since Digicams started having press button playback (some makers had this 25 years ago) , really old canon compacts had a slide switch to playback but we`re talking in in the 1.3 to 3 megapixel days and the cheaper end of the A series there .
