What lens to choose with M100

You ought to look at the Sigma 56 mm f/1.4 lens. It’s native M mount and an excellent lens. I’ve seen it for $319 used at MPB.

Hello All,

I have Canon EOS M100, I bought it in India, with 2 lenses 15-45mm and 55-200mm.
Both of these lenses are not ideal for Portrait photography. After a lot of research, I came to a conclusion that the lens I would need will be
Poonam

Your M100 has a EF-M lens mount, so you need to look for lenses that have a EF-M mount, or get a EF to EF-M mount adapter and then you can use either EF mount or EF-S mount lenses.

As you have discovered, you cannot fit lenses or adapters that are designed for MFT (Micro Four Thirds like Olympus or Panasonic) or Sony (or Nikon, or Canon RF mount etc etc). Lenses (and adapters) are very specific to cameras and unless you have the correct mount it will just not fit.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens, because it had good aparture.
It needs a EF to EF-M mount adapter
Now I ordered this lens and it would not fit on the camera. Hence, I tried these adapter
K&F CONCEPT KF06.090 EOS-M4/3 adapter
This is to fit a EF lens to a M4/3 camera, not Canon EF-M camera like M100
K&F CONCEPT KF06.437 EOS-NEX PRO adapter
This is to fit a EF lens to a Sony NEX camera, not Canon EF-M camera like M100
They also did not fit.
I tried lens from other brand
YONGNUO YN 50mm f/1.8 II Lens for Canon EF
This has the same EF mount as the Canon 50mm lens and also needs a EF to EF-M adapter.
still did not fit.

I have the mirrorless model with 9 pin and it seems that even though it is said that ef mount lenses will be compatible, it does not seem working for me.
EF and EF-S lenses are compatible - as long as you have the correct EF to EF-M adapter.

Your only options regarding lenses are;

EF-M mount - no adapter required

EF - needs EF to EF-M mount adapter

EF-S - needs EF to EF-M mount adapter

Note that even Canon's own RF mount lenses (like RF 50mm f1.8) will not fit the m100 and cannot be adapted.
Could anyone please help me suggest what lens or adapter I need for portrait photography?
Since you appear to already have two EF mount 50mm lenses (unless you returned them), the cheapest option is probably to buy the correct EF to EF-M mount adapter. I only ever used a Canon branded adapter, but something like would also work;

You could, as mentioned above, also look at a Sigma 56mm f1.4 lens in Canon EF-M mount (be careful since Sigma also sells these lenses in other mounts, like Sony).

While your current lenses are not ideal for portrait photography because they do not have fast apertures (like f1.8 or faster) to produce shallow depth of field, if you set them to around 45mm to 80mm in focal length, they are quite capable of taking portraits - just without the background being as blurred. Another option might be to standard further away and use the 55-200mm at a longer focal length (maybe around 120mm ?) to achieve a shallower DoF and better subject separation.

It sounds like you may be fairly new to photography (because you didn't know about different lens mounts), so maybe it is worth experimenting and learning with the lenses you have.

Viltrox has a EF-M mount lens, a 56mm 1.4 that's suitable for portraits, and much less expensive than the Sigma.

KF Concepts has an adapter that will allow you to mount EF and EF-S lenses, and it's less expensive than the Canon. I have both. The Canon is available with a mount that allows you to use a tripod to support the lens without stressing the camera mount.

7Artisans make a 25mm 1.8 manual focus with a 12 blade aperture. I bought mine for $52. It gives you a 40mm field of view that is great for street photography, and low light situations.

Good Luck

I have a Viltrox version as well, and that one work fine for me.
I suspect that Poonam was referring to the Vitrox 50mm lens, not the Vitrox EF to Ef-M adapter.
Sorry for not being clear. The "as well" means I have a both a Canon adapter and a Viltrox adapter. ;-)
I think the issue was that Poonam did not buy the correct adapter - either time, irrespective of brand - neither a M4/3 not Sony NEX adapter will work on a M100.
