LEICA Q3 or FUJIFILM X100 VI?

Is anyone looking at keeping both Q3 and X100VI?

I Currently have Q3 that is paired along with my A7RV and a Ricoh GRIII. prior to the Q3 I had X100, X100S, X100F, X100V and always loved that camera. I do feel the the Q3 is superior in most aspects but at times is a little large. That’s why I bought the GRIII, I love the form factor but my herniated disk is not a fan of not having a tilt screen option.

I have a X100VI on pre-order and was told that Im close and planned on selling the GRIII but am starting to think that it would almost kill the fact of having a smaller lighter camera that I can toss in a small pack and have a capable camera on motorcycle trips when I don’t want to carry the Q3 or a larger Sony setup.
DONT SELL RICOH GRIII.

You will buy it again....

Hello everyone.

I would like to thank everyone here all this time for the suggestions, thoughts, opinions etc.

I ordered today my first Leica. Its a Leica Q3 and I will entry happily in to Leica family.

Greg
Again, congratulations. Hope you are enjoying your Q3!

Different cameras have different uses - so I still have my GRIII . . .

Hi,

Though this is late, I would like to respond to your situation. Since you are interested in JPG only, then Fuji is the better option specially that you have a big community who post recipes all the time. However, I would get one or two small primes with the XT5 rather than buying X100VI (if you get your hand on one). Having said that, the X100VI is an excellent option specially that you can sell it afterwards and make extra money. Going light is very wise, going with cheaper gear visiting many cities has less risk of being robbed. The built in ND filter and IBIS are bonuses.

While the Leica Q3 has a higher resolution sensor than the Fujifilm: 60mp vs 40mp, the Fujifilm is more compact and can easily fit in a shirt pocket or jacket pocket. For a carry around camera for street photography I believe the Fujifilm is a more practical choice. And the lens on the Leica sticks out much further than the Fujifilm. And for the money! my gosh it is nearly 1/4 the price! If I want a camera for landscapes I can go to my Canon R5 II and a variety of lenses. But that's what I want for a carry around camera. And, I recently bought some filters, including a polarizer. The Fujifilm does do it all, but it sure does a lot. So, IMHO, get the Fujifilm and pocket your savings.

Hello

I want to share some thoughts with you in order to help me choose the right camera.

I sold almost my photographic equipment and I kept only 2 cameras. Ricoh GRII and Fujifilm XT5 and some lenses ( 10-24/4 & 35/2 & 56/1,2 & 16-80/4)

My project for the next years is to visit cities and countries around the world and taking street photography and some landscape photography and publish some books with these photos.

Street photography is 80-85% of my photos now. The rest is landscape photography.

Here some key points
  1. I want to take only one camera and one lens. No big cameras, no lenses, no bags anymore. I like to be more minimalist in my philosophy to take photos and in my life generally.
  2. I shot 95% Jpeg not RAW. I know the benefits of RAW in editing, dynamic range etc but all cameras has anymore very good jpeg. And it’s ok for me. If a camera has RAW and JPEG I choose this option and keep RAW for the future when I print the books. Then I will edit my final photos for the printing. I
  3. I like 28mm not 35mm
  4. I sold my Canon and Fujis and I have 8.000$ in stock. For my new camera and for my first trips.
I read many reviews and I decided to buy one of these 2 cameras for my basic camera.

Leica Q3

Or

Fuji X100 VI with 28mm lens

Would you like please to send me your opinion about this dilemma? Which you would prefer Leica Q3 or Fuji X100VI and why?

Thank you

Greg Plat.
I bought the X100V soon after it was released then sold it (for a profit) after a trip abroad. Fast forward I bought the X100VI and took it on a trip around Africa, then sold it (for a profit) when I returned. A few months ago I bought a Q3 and took it on a month long trip to Mongolia and Europe and when I came home I swore I'd never sell it. I just love this camera.

The X100VI is not a bad camera but I just never connected with it. I didn't really care for the menu system, never really like the feel in my hands, it was ok, but it just didn't do anything for me. Now the Q3 is just a pleasure to hold and to use, I love the menus, I love the fit, finish and weight, I love the IQ and the large files which are similar to my Sony a7rv. I'll admit that I also have an m11p so I like being able to go from one to the other without issue.

For me the Q3 is just a beautifully built camera, and it should be for the price, and I love it. If I was needing a truly pocketable camera I'd get the Ricoh GR, the difference in size between the X100VI and the Q3 was not enough for me to choose the X100VI, and I tried putting the x in my pocket but it was not something I'd ever do.

if you mainly shoot jpeg, I would probably lean fuji, but I feel if you already have owned fuji and other brands then you probably know whether or not you like it.

they are not that comparable tbh.

The Q3 is a better camera in every possible aspect. This should be expected as its 3.5x the cost of the Fuji. If you can afford it, you will be rewarded with a great shooting experience and fantastic image quality.

I own both and will be selling the X100VI shortly.

The OP posted on March 7 2024 that they purchased the Q3. He is now a (presumably) happy Leica owner. It would be nice if they reported back in here to bring their hunt, and decision, to full circle.

It's just my educated opinion. Don't get bent out of shape.

I was a Nikon Pro and then Fuji X Pro user until summer 2024. Something happened cognitively. I lost a few steps. I came home from a cruise with almost nothing ( many out of focus shots) from my 100V. I bought a Q3 and DLux 8. I also have 4 other Fuji X cameras and a lot of glass. The Leica menu system is without a doubt more user friendly. However, the Leica “look” that I have seen and admired in prints I have yet to experience in my Q43 and DLux. Perhaps more important is the Q3 is much heavier than the 100vi. 960 vs 520 grams +/-. I’m a 76 year old leg amputee and 450 grams - almost a pound is significant weight. I know the Q is with me. The 100VI is pocket-able and easier to hide, the Q is not. If you can easily cope with the Fuji menu cluster ____, put the money into travel. If you want to swing for the fences with image quality …I think the Q.

If you predominantly shoot JPEG and already have an XT5, I would buy a 16, 18, or 23mm lens to go with that. Spending significantly more on a Q3 would be a waste of money.
I agree with you on the XT5 advice. If he already has it, that is already light and minimalistic and with a small zoom he has a lot more versatility.

I had many x100 series cameras for many years when I shot Fuji X, but then I leaped to Fuji GFX medium format with the Q2 and then Q3 as a compliment to that heavy gear.

I love it.

But anytime someone says any Leica product is a "waste of money" I chuckle.

The Q3 is a waste of money only if you can't afford it, and if you can't afford it, don't even think about it.

I love the Q3 because it is beautiful, very compact, Leica build quality, and that great Summilux 28 mm lens. (Note: I like the Q2/3 size way better than the smaller X100 series - the Q3 is much better in hand).

The IQ of the APSC sensor is probably just fine for the OP but I prefer FF over APSC now and also prefer MF over FF because I am a resolution IQ junkie on big 6K monitors and like the latitude in post one gets as you climb the sensor size chart. But again, that is not an issue for the OP.

I also prefer 28mm FF of the Q2/3 than the 35mm FF equivalent) X100 vi for a fixed lens camera because I like wider if I have only that one fixed lens.

Also, I don't like the conversion of that fixed lens or any kind of cropping options. If you need that, get a zoom on your XT-5. Treat the X100 vi for what it is. a 35mm equivalent lens. (Many people prefer 35mm to 28mm if you have a fixed lens, but I don't.)

Back in the day I'd always shoot with a 35mm on my Sony a7rv (still own it) because it was safer and allowed me to stand back a bit. These days I enjoy being more in the mix (for lack of a better term) and closer to what I'm shooting which is mostly street photography so the Q3 suites me perfectly. I also have an m11p and also have a 28mm in addition to a 50 and 35.

I often wonder if the people who are so critical of the Q3 have actually shot with one for any length of time. Cameras these days are all very good so after you get past the pixel peeping you're left with the pure joy of using the tool itself and for me Leica is completely different from the rest. It just feels good and in hand and makes me happy every time I take it out and get ready to hit the streets. This isn't something you can describe to people who have never shot with one, believe me I've tried, they have to experience it for themselves and see if they feel the same way.

I had the X100v and X100VI and sold them both, but when I finally bought and used the Q3 I was sold, I just connected with the camera in a way that no one could have described to me prior to owning and using one. Is Leica for everyone, of course not, but it certainly checks most of the boxes for me when considering what I look for in a camera for what I like to shoot.

Great post Allen. I agree totally.

So now, 18 months later, do you still have the Q3? How are you getting along with it?

I recently bought a Q3 (still have a X100vi and an XT5) and couldn't be happier with it. Even though I often just shoot jpegs, turns out the only fujifilm film sims I liked trended towards Leica Looks - and the Leica Looks look like perfection to me. The colors, contrast, the camera, the foto app and the whole experience, just wow.

Are you using the grip attachment? My Q3 is only 743 grams with the battery.

I agree 100%. I still have my 100VI because it's such a beautiful camera (and can look very nice sitting on the shelf) but the whole experience with the Q3 (including the IQ) is just on another level. Something I've not experienced before with any other camera.

The experience is second to none. Something the spec warriors will never understand.
