Awesome shots and pup! Yes, the Z6iii is a MAJOR improvement over what we had in that line of cameras.

RAW to LRC, very little editing, some cropping, Tamrikon 70-180f2.8.

It was almost TOO EASY!
Very nice, well-focused shots. I also have the 70-180; I'm eager to try it out with my Z6 III.

Very nice. Good looking puppy dog too!

Impressive AF consistency! Did you use 3D tracking? I especially liked the above two shots because the eyes were sharp despite being in the shadows or mostly closed.

This morning I tried some shots of my fellow swimmers at swim practice using 3D tracking of my D7500 and the equivalent of our Zfc. I concluded that for swimming it works best with the focus point or area always fixed. Would a Z6III with a fixed focus point or area work better than my present cameras?

Good question as I actually forgot what I set U2 up for. These were with Wide L People. It is a bad Z7II habit I'll try to break, but I'm used to it. Since it was working so well I didn't change it up as planned. Wide L will track subjects outside of the box.

I never use full area though. I could use a Wide XL mode, and surprisingly Nikon did add subject detection to Wide S. Which I don't think is necessary, but I may find a use for it. I've moved away from dynamic as it can have a hunting delay when there is very low contrast that is longer than Wide has.

I like not having to "mark" the subject, but I also like having some control of the subject area. Ideally, I would REALLY like to modify the size and shape of C1 and C2 as I did with Canon, and Canon remembers the positioning of these modes separately from each-other. I could keep one for horse photos because the rider is high, but you still want to frame the horse.

I think I can get a little more sharpness out of this combo/lens, but now I'm open to getting the 2.8S zooms. With Expeed6 I wasn't ready to invest in more Z glass. I had used the f2.8S lenses on the Expeed6 Z's.

I crop quite a bit, so I do wish I had a few more MP's, a well as some longer battery life.

Mae just turned 1yo. My daughter's teacher brings in rescue puppies to her classroom. Being used to larger working dogs, I was hesitant to get a smaller black dog with dark eyes, but I was outvoted. She's great around the house, with people, dogs, and our cats (sort-of.) Surprisingly good office dog too.

So that meant I just needed to get a better camera. ;)

Well, I'm a sucker for good dog photos and those are just super. We once had a black bearded collie and when he was a puppy he had 100% light absorption. On film, there were just detail-less black holes in the shape of a dog. Those shots are perfect.

This sounds like a reasonable explanation as to why dynamic with the Zfc hasn't worked as well for me for swimming compared to the D7500.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying your new camera. More importantly, thanks for rescuing a local black dog! Sadly, black dogs are often the last to be rescued and first to be euthanized. Our oldest pup, Zoey, was featured in a book on this subject: https://www.fredlevyart.com/index/G00007N.NR0KFZ5I

Hopefully this means you won’t have to waffle between brands any more 😉

I guess I like all dogs and cameras, but there are only a few I want to live with. LOL

Still happy with my OG Z6, but definitely interested in getting a Z6III ! (in a few years when the prices come down)

sky runner, good job on your dog photos they look somewhat 3D on my 10th gen iPad. Kudos to you and Nikon !

Nice! Those are better than I ever did with my Z6, though I only tried dogs once or twice and it was before firmware updates. No idea if that helps.

I think I can get even more out of this combo IQ wise. I'm only focusing on tracking and hit rates.

I did well enough with the Z5/Z50/Z7II, even shot an airshow without much trouble. I'm after better hit rates for general sports and dog photos with and less fiddling around. The Z6III offers this. My A9-II and A7CII hardly get firmware updates, and Nikon really gives us that much more to look forward too over time. The Z6 and Z6II were nothing like the original releases. Even the Z8 had a substantial update within the first few months. Firmware support matters!

Great set of photos!

I am most likely going to get the 70-180 f/2.8 as soon as my bank account recovers from buying the Z6iii. Although 70-200 f/2.8S is still in the running, right now I am thinking that the compactness of the 70-180 will trump the IQ of the 70-200.

Thank you. Exactly, half the weight, much cheaper, 3" shorter, and just don't view them at 200%. I need to compare my e-mount to the f-mount. It is too bad the G2's (e-mount) are larger and heavier (35-150f2.8 as well) than the original designs.

I'll try and get some lower ISO shots. These aren't doing the lens justice, unless I have a bad copy.

Oh yeah, it definitely helps. Focusing on the Z6 with firmware post 3.0 (we're on 3.60 now) is substantiually impoved compared to 1.0 firmware.

It will never touch the Z6III, or even the Zg of course, but hey I'm happy with it for now, and I can wait ;)

Great pictures and great dog!

Enjoy your Z6 iii. Curious to read more about your first-hand experience.
