loving this new setup. these are the sharpest glass cube images i have produced to date.

olympus 10.5mm objective with new designed tube lens



my nikon 16.5 objective that i thought was not good ,it just needed a good tube lens. its not quite as sharp as the olympus but i couldnt of got the image as the spider was shot at 16mm towards the back of the tube, a great result.

Awesome details, great shots,

the eye in the 1st photo it almost looks like a sunrise 👍

did you like the first image, it was the sun shinning through my window and hitting the back of the spider. i should have the raynox 150 arrive this week so i will give you my findings after i have tested it, i have used the canon 500d and 250d back to back and adjusted the tube infront and behind the tube lens so i could get near perfect FF focus with only the slightest vignette. takes some time to get these right as you could well imagine.

Thanks, its been a real learning curve thats for sure. i havnt had to use a tube lens before and even though from all the utubes ive been watching on the subject none of them have been positive with the canon 250d filter. and i have to agree by itself it has alwasy been poor but years ago ive alwasy stacked it backwards with the 500d filters on my tele zoom lens with great results. so i gave it a try while waiting for the raynox 150 to arrive and im thrilled to bits with the reasults as it equals my best finite 10x objective for image sharpness even though it does exibit a bit of chromatic aberation at times.

Thanks Jim, i broke a couple of cubes playing with the new setup. i have added a motor to my rail. not a stepping motor just a 1 rpm geared motor that i control the speed through voltage and still shoot with continous mode at 10+ frames. ive had to make a clutch for it as it still is combersome while chasing the spiders around the cube, but i can save on processing times as my stacks are arounf 130 now not 3 to 4 hundred.

that reduction in shots must be a time saver, I cant remember if your using helicon or zerene but the latter used to be very sloooowww at stacking.

running the rail continuously must have pros & cons (with my engineer hat on) but the results seem to indicate its working well

If I told you that I thought flames or an explosion would improve it, would you accept that I think this of virtually all insect pictures and it's not a critique of your photography?

Yeah, mounting two lenses facing away from each other or towards each other isn't easy.

my raynox arrived and i have tested it. (They sent me the 250 instead of the 150)😌 WOW it was a tight battle but my 2 canon filters stacked pipped out the raynox just in the extreme boarders and corners. they were identical in the center with the exact chromatic aberation. the raynox had slightly less vignette but really in all practical use not a big deal.

Must admit the 250 is super sharp on my 18 300 tamron zoom and it 20mm FOV.

these are straight out of camera no processing at all.

Nice shots!

I can't speak to the difference between your old setup and the new one, but I think you're losing a lot of detail due to the quality of the light source you used. If the light isn't even (diffused), if there is a hot spot in it, then it's specular and specular light makes shiny surfaces shinier. Specular light causes specular surfaces to return the color of the light source, instead of the color of the surface itself, and you'll lose detail. I think you're at a point where working on your light quality will make a bigger difference than changing lenses.

just testing some lwd objectives atm, just quick and dirty light atm. i need harsh light to show defects in the lens setup. you can see defects on very fine white/translucent hairs at the edges of the frame. good fun testing multiple configurations 😊so far im very pleased.

Nice, I’m glad it’s working, amazing to see the levels of detail on the spider

that’s a good stack too (some blue ghosting in lower right hairs which could be tweaked in ps)

what else can you get in the cube ?

wasnt to worried about the gosting just the sharpness at this point. its taken a few days to get the tubes right, ive gone with the raynox reversed 125mm from sensor 30mm to objective ,i know why i have the 250 now i was after 7x not 10x and the raynox 250 gives me that with smaller tube length.. cropped in post makes the image about 10x though.

Great results. Did anyong notice that this secies has six eyes. Most spiders have 8 eyes but there are a few that only have 4.
