Still waiting on the arrival of the 200-800 - Anyone else?

Early December, I put a deposit on a 200-800 with my local camera shop. Since they didn't get any on the release date, I paid full to get on top of the list. More than a month later, there's no sign of the lens.

Anyone else still waiting for their pre-ordered/purchased lens?

Well I ordered it for a rental, way back, like 10 weeks ago, but Lensrentals still doesn’t have any to rent ☹️

I’m pretty confident I’ll love it, so thinking about ordering it now, but if I don’t have it by the first of April, I’ll probably just cancel it, and order another 800 F11 instead. I have to have two long lenses my mid April for a 1 month, cross country birding trip.

I ordered November 2 from B&H and still no lens. Probably just as well as the light is low in Seattle at this time of year.

So Canon have not even fulfilled first day orders yet. Not a good sign for those of us further down the list.

I ordered mine from B&H about midday on November 2. Still no sign of it. I did also order the RF-S 10-18 at the same time. That showed up in December.

I managed to get my order in the night before it was officially announced. I'm sure there were others as well.

I'm also sure, as always, the hierarchy of "good customers" included a few bigger and more frequently active accounts ahead of me whether they were chronologically earlier or not. It's just good business to keep your best customers happy.

My 200-800 lens was due via UPS today and hasn't yet made it. Tomorrow, perhaps.

We are due for one more decent weather day tomorrow here in Colorado. Hopefully, the lens will arrive before sunset. I have been shuffling through the other comparable lenses in my kit during the wait in order to make better comparisons.

The owls are starting to pair up in their nests here. We're looking forward to finding a few after the new lens arrives.

I know I often talk to myself but you shouldn’t worry since I rarely listen to the conversation.

I placed an order on Nov 1st with an online vendor I normally use. I pre-ordered my R5 and R7 through them and was able to get them right on, or even a day before official release date. I'm still waiting on that order to be filled, and there's no word on when that may happen.

In the meantime, I was searching around and actually found a used RF 200-800 at a dealer in Florida for $1599. I called, had them send over a few detailed pics and decided to pull the trigger as their description seemed to be spot-on, and the vendor at a very good overall rating. The lens arrived this morning. It looks brand new, and came in the original box and packaging. The only issue with it is that it came with an off-brand lens cap rather then the OEM Canon one. I've taken a few backyard test shots with the R5 and R7, and also added on the RF 1.4x and some extension tubes as well. Everything works great.

Overall, this used lens cost me right around $1750 after tax and shipping.
I was amazed to see one, even used, marked below MSRP considering the asking prices I have seen from places like eBay.

I'll likely be cancelling my pre-order after trying to put this lens through some paces this weekend.

I have to say that I am impressed with it so far. The zoom is smooth (though a long throw) and everything feels nice. Focus seems fast and accurate, and it doesn't feel as heavy as I expected. It makes the RF 100-500 look small!

B&H lets you sign up to get notified when you might be able to buy one.

I'm guessing that people who have actually paid are ahead of me in line, but it's way less stressful this way.

So what's the guess as to how many Canon is shipping per day? 100? 1000?

The 200-800 showed up. I can't remember such extensive package layering before. I hope that doesn't mean it's fragile.

The serial number on mine is in the high 600 range.

It's definitely bigger and heavier. I don't mind the zoom requiring so many turns. It balances well as has been previously noted.

We're planning to head out to a local wetland this afternoon. I think I'll use it with the R5 + RF 1.4X Extender at first. If the backyard birds cooperate, the R7 will get some work. The weather for the weekend is to be cool and wet so it remains to be seen what sort of testing can be accomplished.

Good luck to everyone still waiting.

I've ordered from Adorama 4 days after the official announcement.

I was in the shop and the friendly rep told me that there were 130+ preorders before mine.

Needless to say, I haven't received it yet. The 10-20 was pretty quick to arrive though.

Adorama has been saying "availability 3/2024" on the 200-800 page for a few weeks now. Not sure what that means.

Guessing 0 "per day" based on the waves of online activity of people announcing theirs shipped rather than daily announcements. Canon is probably using cargo ships rather than air freight for these. By my count there have been two or three waves to the U.S. so far, one in Dec, one in early Jan, and it looks like one last week. Anyone's guess how many have shipped so far.

Ordered it 10 weeks ago, and finally got the email today saying that had "1" in stock, and how soon did I want it ? They offered overnight shipping but obviously that would cost me extra. Told them I could wait until Monday.

Anyway, hope to do lots of testing, and at first, lots of shooting from my back yard blind, from 20-23ft, @F11, for apples to apples comparisons. Will be nice too that I have two R7's so I can litterally switch back and forth with no lens swapping 🙂👍

Then I'll start shooting at different apertures and shorter focal distances....

Then a few days of real world in the field shooting.

But I digress, I'm pretty sure I'll love the lens, and order one the day I return the rental, but still, if I don't get it by the first part of April, I'll cancel and order another 800 F11, and I'll have a full year to get the 200-800. Maybe by next year, places will have them in stock and I can order one and have it in 2 or 3 days.

Oh btw, the rental place confirmed that this is the first one they will have rented out.

no..I order 2.. 1 on nov 2nd at 2am est got that jan 2nd 2nd one order nov 2nd at 830 am est still waiting

its not slow rolling out..rumors is B&H have over 900 order and Nov 2nd..that just them canon ships world wide

No..they ship by boat and maybe once a month

I don't think it means much of anything at this point. The vendor I ordered through had been saying Feb. availability since the first week of January. They just rolled over to March.

Sigh, I had hopped to get this before April. Now I'm not so sure I will even see it then.

What is causing shipping delays?

Ocean shipping routes are always in flux, but 2023 took it to a whole new level. Trade routes were blocked or impeded by geopolitics, labor and weather: sanctions on Russia, U.S.-China tensions, dockworker union unrest, drought-driven cuts at the Panama Canal, and attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
