I have an older Canon Pro-100 and am considering getting the new Epson ET-8550. There isn't really any way for me to try out the Epson so I can compare the quality of the prints to the Pro-100. Does anyone have experience with both and can comment? I've read many positive reviews on the ET-8550. Thanks.

A few weeks ago my Pro 100 bust (wouldn't power on). After a thorough survey I bought the ET-8550 and sold the bust Pro 100 for £50 on eBay.

The ET-8550 prints fine on a variety of papers and is at least as good as the Pro-100 whilst being far cheaper to run using OEM inks. I would ignore A74Me about premature fading since he has never specified his workflow and I couldn't find any other supporting evidence. I've had ET-8500 prints on my wall for 3 months and all is fine.

i dont trust there tests at all. you never see any of the prints do you 🤔there is only one way to test print longevity. do it yourself 😎

Just fake news then? I have displayed my prints on the wall and all are fine but I don't put them in front of a UV lamp.

Thats great ,i dont live in a cave, i live on top of a hill with many large windows and 360 deg views of the ocean and country side, every window and door is open to the breeze and the last week has been 37 deg in the day and 30 at night and 90% humidity. this is how you test an unprotected print 🤨😁😎

Sounds awful compared the chilly dull UK climate my genes are used to.

Hmm! a challenging location for sure......high humidity with likely higher than is common Ozone presence plus greater levels and longer periods of sunlit exposure of the prints.

The fact that you see such rapid fading bears no relationship to a standardised testing procedure.

Yes, you are 'testing' for your purposes in your environment, that does not mean such experience is relevant to the (vast?) majority of others lived experience, does it???

its called real life accelerated print testing, what do the testing sites use 🤔 a camping torch and a stop watch 🤣

I don't know their testing protocols and have no time to go read it for myself.

Though to give some context from another 'market' in the portfolio of the last company I worked for we had a specialised sign material with genuine gold in it. The basic dye based ones had a history of fading and losing their 'gold' colour, anything from 6 months to 5 years ~ depending on location and exposure to the sun. So the USA makers of this product had conducted their own accelerated aging tests done in the Arizona desert IIRC, so they could then justifiably claim its calculated longevity.

The testing environment bore little relationship to the global usage conditions other to give a high level of confidence that it would outperform its competitor products.

@A74me,

Could you please provide more details of your tests with the Epson ET-8550?

How long have you owned the printer? Did you do your tests with Epson original paper?

Could you perhaps share some pictures of the faded prints compared to the ones not exposed to light. My prints in normal room lighting show no signs of fading.

thats the best way, out in harsh conditions, i like to know my prints will last because i mount them in a folder that can be opened and left on a side board of kitchen bench, or in a kids bedroom with no protection.

did that a few weeks ago. you get what you pay for and inks that are 10x less than canon pro printer inks is all you need to know. i have an epson printer that uses the same inks.

As pointed out before Epson charge a price premium for their Ecotank printers to compensate for the cheaper ink. It's a marketing strategy and nothing to do with ink quality.
