DSLR without usb C doomed in EU ? Maybe?

Certainly glad I don't live there. Another perfect example of how stupid government can be.

It seems to crazy to associate this with cameras. I would never dream of charging a camera battery inside the camera with a cord of any kind. A separate charger is required for me to charge camera batteries. So this way, no need for a camera to have a usb C connection to charge batteries. And typical battery chargers plug into mains voltage, so usb C not applicable there either.

How folks in the EU handle this will be fun to watch though.
I haven't seen any statements explicitly forbidding external chargers for the batteries in addition to in-body USB-C charging. Until someone points a such statement to me, as someone living in EU, I expect to still be able to also use a separate charger just as before and in-body charging is merely a complementary option, just as it's now with my R7 and using whichever you prefer is up to you.
Yes, I think that several missed that point.
I think missing the point pretty much sums up many comments on this thread (mostly by people who don’t live in the EU).

Given the number of different chargers / charging cables I’ve still having to maintain, switching to one is a great idea IMHO

Problem it is not only the EU...it is the future or what has been accepted as future way of doing business for Nikon worldwide as evident in their new offering the Zf. The separate charger no longer included, but an optional purchase item.

Yes, that is what I think will happen.

They will all come (worldwide) with the USB charging port and you will need to buy a separate charger if you want one but that will be your choice.

Of course some manufacturers could opt to also include a separate charger for countries that will allow that.

Flip side of having a charger included with every camera is that I currently have *3* chargers that I can use to charge the type of battery my actively used camera(s) use, and in practice two of them are redundant, just gathering dust.

I miss the times when all the phone companies their own own chargers and connectors (this was before USB charging). It was nice because I could charge my phone at my friends, because they all also had Nokia's.

I miss the times when different camera brands used different types of memory cards. My favorite was xD, not because it would have been any better than the competitors, but because it was more expensive and had a funny name.

I miss the times when all the camera brands had different lens mounts. The best brands had several proprietary mounts: Canon simultaneously produced lenses for three different digital mounts. Canon was the king. When universal lens mount was adopted in 2035, innovation died.

<sarcasm ends>

Many things have been unified over the years, such as currencies in Europe. In general Euro has been a success, but it's actually quite difficult to evaluate the full effect, as things get complicated. It's not just how the banknotes look, currency affects whole economies.

When it comes to memory cards, lens mounts or power connectors, evaluating the value of diversity is much easier, as they are only supposed to one or two relatively simple things. The shape and name of these things is really not important. What matters is that the less the better.

Likewise my OM-1 has USB C charging; the external charger is a £119 optional extra.

For once Canon is not leading the field in this tactic - the somewhat cheaper R7 has USB C charging, and also comes with the same external charger as my other Canons, in the box.

I don't think that is how it will be.

The USB specification is quite wide, as I mentioned above. Especially when it comes to the USB-PD power distribution part. A device that needs charging at 48 volts, 240 watts requires a quite different charger and heavyweight cables than say, a Mickey Mouse, mobile telephone charger.

In newspeak "Conformity is Innovation". Once everything is USB-C we can even eliminate the words for alternate technologies, or at least group them as un-USB

With no competition, USB-C will lose all meaning and can adopt a generic noun like "connector". This is the future. Get with the program

Like most people, I only really care about phones though for plug in charging. My Chromebook is already USB-C charging.
