Lens on for firmware update?

I was just about to update firmware on my R6 and read that you should take off the lens first … I’m pretty sure I’ve always left the lens on for previous updates. I’ve lost the body cap, should I wait till I get another or does it matter?

Or I suppose ok to just put the camera face down?

Why do you think it'd be safer for firmware update?

I don't know why Canon wants us to unmount the lens. I'm always forgetting about it when doing firmware updates and it has always worked fine so far.

Never read that, never did that, never had a problem with R, R6, R5, R7 ...
About the never read that part. I have forgotten to remove the lens myself a few times. Here are the instructions.

Don't Look Up.

But if you want to update the lens firmware - they don’t ask you to remove the body!

Personally I’ve never removed the lens. On at least 10 bodies and several firmware updates.

Because I read you should not have the lens attached, and I have lost the body cap for camera. So thought I could just shield the insides of the camera from the light or dust or whatever

Good to know, I’m fairly sure I’ve never removed it before with no problems. Won’t bother buying a new cap for the body, thanks

I would think it would be absolutely impossible to update lens FW with the lens detached from the camera :-)

I don't care if people remove the lens for a body FW update or not. What I like about open forums. I don't how many times I have read "read the manual" over the years. Sometimes it turns out to be "but only follow what's convenient for you". :-)

Even if the risk is low or non existent companies will have standard procedures to avoid any possible glitches.

Ditto. Well mostly ditto - I had read that but I ignored it.

I can see why in some cases it might be a good idea. I once got a (brand new lens) that was really messed up; having it mounted to my 5D4 made the camera misbehave (lock-ups, errors at camera startup). You wouldn't want that going on in the middle of a firmware update.

In general though, with a healthy lens, I consider removing the lens to be overkill.

I too have left the lens mounted. I also forget to put it on P-mode as mentioned on the PDF.

Last time I updated R5 I had battery grip and RF 5.2mm dual fisheye lens on camera. FW install did not give any errors but some time later I wondered why autofocus was not as good and sticky as earlier when shooting swallows in flight

After that I removed lens and grip and restarted camera to default settings. Next reinstalled latest FW and I'm pretty sure that AF was again as good as it was earlier. This was second time I had to do this so I recommend to follow user manual. First time I had some AF issues after update was year or two ago.

I've never read that, and I'm not sure if I've always removed the lens or not.

But get another body cap anyway.

That was my first thought. Get two. There will be a need someday.

Suggestion: buy a set of two sets of 3rd party caps from Amazon, something like these:

https://www.amazon.com/Front-Cover-...-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

I've bought 2 sets of them and they fit perfectly. Then, modify the lens caps so they fit in any orientation (like EF ones do). There are detailed plans online, and the modification can be done with a Dremel or similar tool (recommended) or sharp knife (be very careful!). I chucked the levels, which I find useless, and now I've got spare caps in my most-used camera bags.

I just checked the R7 manual, and was unable to find any such caution concerning lens removal during firmware update. Am I missing something?

The instructions come with the FW update.

I have done it both ways and never had an issue. Most of the time I don't bother unmounting whatever lens (usually the 24-105 L) I have mounted.
