RX100 VII on Safari

Hello, great photos.

I am off on Monday to Cape Town then Victoria falls then Kruger. I am currently buying a new camera and on the list is the rx100vii and the canon r10. I love the Sony size but concerned re getting closer enough to get good animal shots as the zoom is not a zoom zoom lens. The Canon r10 can have zoom lens attached but I am finding these very expensive and so would only have the 150mm lens. Help me decide please. I currently have both camera but need to return one . I know with the rx100 you can zoom passed 200mm but you lose the quality of the image so reluctant. Thank you in advance for your help

I'd go with the RX100.

Lots of great photo opportunities in Cape Town and Vic Falls, and the RX100 would be ideal.

Yes, you can engage digital zoom on the camera, but only if you restrict yourself to jpeg's. Depends how you feel about post processing - if you shoot raw you can probably squeeze more out of the image, but if you are not familiar with post then stay ith jpeg's.

You probably know there are are two different digital zooms modes available, as described here:

Other than that, we all want the best photos we can get, but in my view what we are mostly collecting are memories. I'd spend the nextfew days practicing with the Sony!

Finally, a safari is a magical experience. Don't just live it though the lens.

Enjoy. Me, I'm off to Zambia next month :-)

Thank you for your reply, really very helpful. Enjoy your trip.
have you been on safari before?
I've been very lucky and I've been on many safaris: in cars, on foot, and even in boats. Unfortunately I'm not very well, so I think this year will be my last.

But anyway. A zoom is just essential. Suppose in Kruger elephants walk across in front of you, which they very well might. You'll be close to needing a wide angle!

Again, I don't know your intinerary for Cape Town. If you get the chance to visit Robben island, where Mandela was imprisoned, the RX100 is an ideal camera to capture the inside of his cell and the bleakness of the island.

Regards, Dave

I'd say it's not wide enough. I used a 15mm equivalent lens:

I’d actually look at the rx10 mk4 for safari, great quality lens and very fast auto focus but if your on a tight budget and want lots of zoom I’d take a look at the Nikon P950 .
take a look at the images in the link on this thread

enjoy your experience no matter which camera
