Hi everyone

Considering getting an X100 V

One of my worries is the rated 100,000 leaf shutter rating. Let's assume my x100 V reaches that 100,000 actuation or close to it around the 2 or 3 year mark, and it breaks, will Fujifilm repair/replace the leaf shutter? How much will this cost? Or is this something they cannot replace at all?

Anyone ever had their's replaced out of warranty? How much did it cost you?

Thank you very much.

For reference, the 100,000 value came from Fujifilm's website.

I don't remember reading about anyone who's worn out the shutter on earlier X100 series cameras but I'm 99% sure the leaf shutter is part of the lens assembly so to replace it would involve replacing the entire lens. (I could be wrong)

Anyway, 100-thousand shutter actuations amount to a lot of pictures and doing that in 2-3 years is going to take a lot of machine-gunning. :-)

good luck.

That's what I'm worried about. I would really hate my first X100 to be a disposable tool.

And yes, 100,000 actuation seemed a lot to me, at first, but then I checked my photo backups and when I traveled to India for almost 2 weeks, I took around 4,000 photos.

With an Iceland trip planned, and the X100 V being my only camera, I can expect to take around 5,000-10,000 photos.

I plan to return to India too, so that's another 5,000 photos.

And with a baby planned, and with it being my first child, I can imagine myself being over eager to take lots f photos of my wife and my baby.

Just estimating my over eagerness, 100,000 Photos might not last me 3 years.

I know upgrade and replace is the norm now because of mobile phones, but I would really hope the camera would last me longer than

My understanding of shutter life ratings is not that they will break around that mark. They may experience malfunction much earlier if you are not lucky and they may last a lot longer if you are. Statistically, their testing as shown that most people can count on them for at least 100 000 shots. In film terms, that would be around 50 000$ of processing costs ;)

Since the 100V is the first of a series of camera equipped with this lens, and the camera will probably be hugely successful, I wouldn't worry about replacement parts not being available for many years. I'd be surprised if they won't service it in 10 years, or even 15, should it need servicing. But I suspect that it probably won't need it.

Have you tried calling Fujifilm USA tech support about leaf shutter replacement costs on the X100F? I doubt they have any data for the X100V yet.

It might depend on your location - in the UK service is fixed price (£155 for current X100 series cameras including parts and labour).

The other alternative would be to use the electronic shutter wherever possible.

I do not think they will do everything for the fixed price. The answer after actual assessment might be something like 'beyond economic repair' with maybe an offer for a refurb.

What’s interesting about Fuji marketing is that they don’t talk about averages or mean time before failure - the page linked to above actually states the shutter will withstand 100,000 shots. So if it doesn’t, regardless of warranty status, a customer could legitimately claim they were mislead and demand a repair that way.

That actually happened on another forum thread (not sure if it was here or elsewhere) - after having been fobbed off initially, a poster managed to successfully argue that their X-Pro2 hadn’t lived up to the advertising claim (150,000 shots in that case) and get a free repair.

Of course for that to work here you’d need Fuji to have made the same claim in writing about the X100V (not the X100F as in the link).

In the same vein, is the curtain used in the viewfinder (i.e., the bit that pops up when you switch to the EVF) also rated for a finite number of uses?

I intend on getting the x100V and was thinking about this. I imagine wanting to use the OVF a lot, but review my pics in the viewfinder immediately after, like I do with my X-H1. Should I have to think about "wearing out" the viewfinder?

The scary thing is that my casually used X100F is now at 55000 shutter accutations.. :-(

If you use it that much maybe you will wear it out. But then you will have taken a lot of hopefully great keeper images. Buy it, use it, enjoy it. Don’t let it’s eventual demise spoil that. No piece of electro-mechanical equipment lasts forever! IMO it’s a great piece of kit for the price.

Why scary? Don’t imagine the worst!

I would recommend using the electronic shutter for everything that is not moving extremly fast, this will keep the mechanical shutter pristine for much longer.

The shutter unit in integrated within the lens assembly, and so any replacement would be quite costly.

Also, I recall an announcement by FUJI that they are unable to do repairs to the original X100 camera owing to a lack of spares. I'm supposing that this is because of the 'Stuck Aperture Blade' problem that they had with that model.

The scary thing is that my casually used X100F is now at 55000 shutter accutations.. :-(
Do you do time lapses? I wonder how did you clock up so many photos casually.

Besides, it's hardly "scary" - the camera shutter is at half life after 6 years of heavy use, so it will likely last at least 12 years. Nothing lasts forever.

Not 100% sure. I've had the X100 (a month or two after its original release), the S and now the V. In all my years shooting, I only took out 1 shutter and it was on a Canon D30 I bought used in 2002. In 2004 its shutter count was well over 200k and it finally gave up. Upgrade to the 20D.

For Fuji, never had a shutter die on me. I view the "count" they state as just a statement of "it should last at least this long". I suggest just shooting and having fun. Capture the images you want and if that time comes, then cross that bridge when it happens.

Yes, the leaf shutter is part of the lens assembly.

Call Fuji’s service department and see if they can estimate the cost of replacing the lens module which would contain the shutter as well. It would probably cost more to have them replace the shutter separately.

What you could do is assign shutter type to an Fn button a leave the camera on ES until you are in situations where you want the Mechanical Shutter. I do this when I am shooting a lot of bursts.

PS. The X100V will last a long time unless you are shooting a much higher than average number of photos. By all means do that, but accept that there will be additional costs. It’s like driving a car 50k miles a year; all that wear comes with additional repair and maintenance costs not experience by someone who drives 10k a year.
