Hi!

I have finally bought my first own camera, a Sony A7 III. I paid 900€ for it in mint condition without any scartches or signs of use, it was basically unused. The sc was only 10K and it came with two batteries, charger and the leash. I'm now buying a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for 500€.

I want to thank all of you for helping me choose perfect camera and lens for my needs and answering my long questions through last few months. I am very happy with the camera and I know I won't regret it!

Congratulations.

Good luck and good light.

I was into amateur photography for 35 years before I bought my first new camera, my current A7RIV. In my opinion, new is very over rated. All of my used equipment served me very well and most of it is still operational. I still miss my low miles used A77, which was stolen, and would probably still be using it if it hadn't been.

I don't know what the exchange rate is bit is sounds like you got a heck of a good deal! It was just a few years ago that the A7III was the hottest camera you could buy, and in those years it's capabilities haven't diminished one bit.

Any one can buy the latest fanciest camera if they have the money to do so but learning how to take good pictures with it is a whole different story. You have an excellent camera now you have to live up to its potential.

Enjoy your new camera!

Nice!

I also got a used A7III 2 months ago for 1100€, with around 7000 shots. It's a great camera, and I come from a R6! They're basically identical in capabilities, but the Sony system is much less expensive for casual shooters.

I sold my R6 plus 24-70 for 4000€ and with that money I got the used A7III, new Sigma 28-70 and new Fuji X100V 🙂

Overall I'm happy with this switch! Now someday I will get a telephoto zoom lens from Sigma or Tamron, something that Canon didn't let me.

Enjoy, it was my first Sony when I switched from Nikon few years ago.. Never any problems. Nothing against Sony and I have since gone from the A7iii to A9ii and maybe this will never happen to you, but FYI... There have been issues with the shutter. That was the main reason I sold mine when I heard about this. It was sell it while it was worth something. Maybe it was being an alarmist, but I "slept better" The A7IV did not exist at that time .

Congrats! It was an amazing camera a few years ago and still is incredible (currently shootin' on one). Ticks all the boxes for me (battery life, excellent IQ, tilty screen, IBIS, fast AF, weather resistant, lightweight, price) + that amazing lens ecosystem (soo many options and constantly getting more, not too expensive too).

You will grow fond of it. I still use mine extensively. I resisted upgrading to A7iv, then A7rv when I realized it works well for me. Besides, I usually skip at least one generation when upgrading but that's not the point. It's highly customizable so I'm never more than a button press away from my most favourite setups

I've had the camere for about a month now and I'm in love with it. My Instagram is @hnkz_photo so you can see some of my first photos as a beginner.
Glad you love it! I don’t do Instagram; can you post some here?

Nice! I ordered a new a7 III (body only) with cashback from Sony. I could easily have got used gear instead, but this time I didnt. I think I will get the 24-70 or 24-105, or maybe the G2 Tamron that starts on 28mm instead.but then i will get used gear.

For a long time I was thinking of getting the a7R IIIa (no cashback) whis is sold for a good price. That evf was tempting to have. I hope Ill be just as happy with the A7 III. I have 50 days to make a final decision if this is my bag or not. Probably it is.

Are you guys happy with your A7 III ? 🙂 Did you get it when it was new or after a cpl of years from the release.

Exept for the difference in price, what made you go for the III instead of the RIII ?

I have the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and I'm really happy with it! It's really sharp and light but if you are buying it used (like I did) make sure to check the amount of dust inside the lens. I had a little which fortunately doesn't affect the images but is something to keep in mind since this lens is known for gathering some dust.

For me the 7 III is all and need in a camera and more. As my first camera I don't need the more expensive models (for now atleast) and the A7 III had everything I wanted. I shoot mostly street and sometimes portraits but I hardly ever use the EVF, but when I do I have no problem with the quality of it. It's sharp and smooth but once again as a beginner I have nothing to compare it to. Same goes for the screen. Ofcourse I would like to have a sharper and better screen but when I preview the photos I look for the focus and the exposure and only look at sharpness in post. It's still better than I'll ever need.

The main advantege of the higher megapixel count is the only major difference. It all depends on what you shoot, for landscape and portrait the extra resolution is always nice but you won't notice the difference between 24 vs 42 megapixels when looking at the photo unless you crop in. The a7 III's 24 megapixels is fantastic especially when paired with a sharp lens like the Tammy. I crop in all the time and have no problem especially when i know that after the edit I and everyone else is going to look at it on a phone anyway. It's still really good and performs well even when shooting in super 35 crop mode and even still you can cropp in a bit if you have exposed the photo well.

In Finland the A7 III is 1800-200€ new and A7R III 2600€ new and in that case I would go for the regular A7 III (again depending on your needs and usecases) but if buying used the A7R III goes for 1400€ in which case I think it's worth it since the A7 III is weirdly around the same price used if bought from an authorized reseller.

Hope that helps!

Henrik

Followed, you've got a good eye, keep it up!

That 28-75 has probably sold as many cameras for Sony as any of their own lenses tbh!

Hello, Henrik!

Thats some really good info. The 28-75 seem like nice catch, and today I can get it with 110 euro off, I guess (new). I just wonder if the 24mm of lets say the 24-105 would be useful. Is there a 24-75 as well? I have to think of the weight of my setup as well, so maybe the 24-105 with the a7 III is not a combo you would like to walk around with on your shoulde or neck?

Glad to hear it gives you nice results. I actually was about to get the body + kitlens combo, but the last time I tried it, I kind of felt it was "meeeh".

Is there a useful close range with the Tamron? Not macro, but how close would you get?

Thank you once again.

=)

...oh, and the a7R III is only 1900 Euro where I can get it from. Question is - better to use that money for lenses? Or is that a better buy over all..? 1900 for R (the even newer "a" version) vs around 1500 for standard a7 III. Just worried about that evf and lcd... and do i need that mp-count? Harder to edit maybe?

I wouldn't worry too much about this - they sold huge numbers of this camera and there are comparatively very few reported shutter failures. And it's relatively cheap to replace even if you're unlucky enough that it does break :)

Hi again!

I got to try the sony 24-105mm f4 in a store with a A7R II and while the reach was great, it did feel quite front heavy. It's something you could probably manage but not for long. I personally need more reach aswell and am looking to get a 70-200mm, either the Tamron 70-180 which is apparently very compact and light or a sony 70-200mm f4. Sure those lenses are heavy aswell but you're also getting a lot more reach. I would get two nice lenses instead of one that doesn't cover as much. However if you do travel photography forexample or you want to travel relatively light or with only one do-it-all lens, the 24-105 from what I've heard is a great option. I do suggest you watch a few reviews or comparisons on youtube. Another option could ve the Tamron 28-200mm. I originally considered this lens but ended up with the 28-75mm f2.8 because of the fixed apperture.

With a 400€ difference I would probably go for the R version. However I don't know your budget or usecases. What kind of photography are you planning on shooting?

When it comes to the screen, I recently did an industrial photoshoot as a part of my summerjob. Some of my favourite shots looked awesome on the LCD but when I had a quick look at them on my computer I realised I had used a bit too low of a shutter speed and you could really see it when zooming in a bit. It was impossibe to tell it on the LCD. On one shot my ISO too high and it had a lot of unwanted noise that couldn't have been seen on the cameras LCD. Maybe a sharper LCD could help...?

If you have the budget and need I would go with the A7R III and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and the buy a 70-200mm later on. Sony is rumored to launch a 70-200mm f4 mark II which would be even lighter and sharper. The 24mpx of the A7 III is incredible 80% of the time but the 42mpx could allow you to use the crop mode more often and crop in even more in post without losing much quality. That could help before you get a longer zoom. Both the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and 70-180mm f2.8 are incredibly sharp and light weight so carrying an extra lens shouldn't add too much extra weight, especially if you have a camera bag to put it into. I'm currently saving up for either the Tamron or Sony.

Hope that Helps!

Henrik
