Great captures Jerry!

Heading to SA Kruger area later in the year. This would be my number one attraction but I hear they're not easy to find.

I have done a morning safari in Ramthanborne India but no tiger on that day.

Another morning run in Wilpatu Sri Lanka but no leopard sighting there either.

We did see other species and birds both times including a sloth bear and they were a great experience.

We'll be doing about 5 runs around Kruger so hopefully we'll 'spot' a leopard 😃

Cheers

Paul
Thanks and best of luck on your upcoming visit. I hope you're fortunate enough to find one while you're there. I've been to SA on a second visit, but we were not nearly as fortunate and only saw a leopard at a distance and late in the evening. It was difficult or impossible to get a decent photograph for a variety of reasons, unfortunately (but still an an amazing encounter). I felt I'd won the Safari Lottery after we came across the leopards resting in the tree shown here. Unforgettable.

I'd love to return, but I'm afraid the 24+ hours of travel to get there are a bit more than this old dude can handle these days.

Yeah I can appreciate how you felt. That's just a stunning shot. Otherwise seeing one in the distance would be great as well.

I'll have the 100-400 with me so hopefully it'll be enough and a 1.4tc if needed. But light and luck are the 2 most needed items.

The other option would be my 100-400 on MFT instead but with the tc I should get similar reach.

I think it's similar distance for us living on the Aussie East coast. It's probably closer to 20 hours. I'm definitely feeling my 68 years though so we'll see how it goes.

I hope you get another opportunity maybe somewhere closer to home.

Thanks

Paul

Thanks, Paul. Not sure how many places closer to my home (Pacific NW, USA) would host the sort of wildlife that you can see in Africa. If you can handle the travel (both costs and distance), the trip is absolutely worth it, IMHO. Have been fortunate enough to travel there twice.

I have the fondest memories of our travels to Australia (and NZ). Magical places.

These are superb Jerry. You were very close and there above you, I'm glad you are still with us to share these wonderful images.

Very diverse set of images(and equally diverse locations)
Yeah I'm not the most technical photographer but I'm fast! Travel photography is a bit like speed chess and you never know what you'll see.

Thanks, Morris. It was quite a bit safer than it looks, but it was arguably one of the most exciting wildlife encounters I’ve had. Would love to return by I’m not sure this old dude can handle over 24 hours of travel to SA any more.

Love this one, must have been a special moment. That is chilling par excellence! That said, it does not look like the most comfortable position.

I did see Leopards in Kenya, but never saw one up a tree this close, as I say a special moment.

Thank you. Indeed it was very special and a complete surprise. We were cruising down the path in our safari vehicle when our driver hit the gas and said we needed to hurry to see something very special. Needless to say, we were pretty well gobsmacked when we pulled up to this tree with the sleeping leopards. Leopards are hard enough to find as it is, but seeing them this close and in such an interesting setting felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Just glad I managed to come back with a few decent images.

Just one more from that set.

The last one is a stunner. if I have taken it, it would be framed and hung. Yes, knowledge + intuition (of local guides) = a great photo opportunity (then it's down to us!).

Thank you, Jules! That one is printed large and on the wall. Not sure I’ll ever have the opportunity to see something like this again and it brings back fond memories every time I walk past it.

For me, travel and photography are inseparable.

My trusty, beat-up little x20, with its blurry viewfinder, and broken flash, was still a good enough camera to convince me to jump into the x- system proper recently, with a X-E1.

It's been up mountains and to Italy with me and bizarrely is the one camera I'll probably never sell...(no-one would want it in it's current condition 🤣).

Here are my top 10 shots with it.......

I joined DPR in 2012, however I was lurking the site since it's early days (late 90's early 2000s)

Early days with Canon

I was because of Phil Askey's reviews that I bought my first digital camera in 2002 - the Canon IXUS v2

Don't judge me on my early work I wasn't much of a photographer then.

one of my first digital images 20years ago. It's pretty terrible, I know. I SWEAR I've gotten better.
one of my first digital images 20years ago. It's pretty terrible, I know. I SWEAR I've gotten better.

Then in 2003 Canon announced their first "budget" dslr - the Canon Rebel aka 300D. Again it was DPReview that convinced me to pull the trigger in 2004 even though at the time it cost me 2 weeks pay for the camera and a kit lens (my second most expensive personal purchase at the time aside from my car)

this was my favorite image from my time with my Rebel.

Still a crap photographer in 2009....I thought I was so arty (hahaha)

A switch to Fuji

In 2012 I started seriously thinking about getting a new camera and I officially signed up for DPReview after 12 years of lurking about. I asked questions on various forums and continued to read the reviews then in 2013, I switched to Fuji with my purchase of an X-E1. I couldn't resist it's beautiful retro style which I chose over the Canon 6D. DPRs camera comparison tool convinced me that the difference in IQ wasn't big enough to fork out nearly $1000 more for the 6D.

Here are some of my best photos with the X-E1 and X-Pro2 (purchased in 2018). I know I don't post here much and you probably don't remember me from the last time I posted but your advise and support has been invaluable none the less...

Thank you
DPReview and Fuji X forum members.

This won 3rd Place in the "Motion" challenge back in 2015

See, I did get a little better as a photographer. Hopefully this was worth the wait.

I printed the following image as a 20x30inch canvas print. Not bad for a 16MP image.

It's at this point I discovered ultra wide angle lenses

dabbling with adapted vintage lenses. This next image was selected by DPR staff to feature as one of the images to promote the new Adapted Lens forum

Not one of my best photos but whatever
Not one of my best photos but whatever

this next one is one of my favourites...

The Samyang 12mm has become my most used lens.

Some night photography

Samyang 12mm again (ignore the exif if it says the anything other than 12mm...I was never good at remembering to change the FL setting for my MF lenses)

Fog seems to be a recurring theme for some of my latest images as evidenced by the next two shots.

finally a shot with a different lens

Nope...back to 12mm

I wish everyone all the best for what ever you do and where ever you go xxx

Lovely post with so much info about your journey, I guess we are all in similar boats when it comes to this hobby.

Your post made me think, have I made any quantifiable progress when it comes to taking pictures, guess I would need to go back and look. :)

I loved your UW shots, I guess it's time to buy a UWA lens for my RF mount. Somehow this thread had me looking into various fuji gear thinking I would need it on hikes and during my travels.

I bought my first canon camera(1000D) in 2008 after checking dpreview and recently upgraded to eos R in 2020. Man I would miss this place.
