DPReview Shutdown Thread - Nikon Z

Long time member. Bummed to hear the news. First order of business is to find another forum or two. Members here have any suggestions?
Few of the good members here anymore. You are one of those few.

I see a little further along someone mentions FM in a reply to you. Find enough I guess. Not as good as DPR used to be.

An FYI There's a hierarchy of members over on FM that in the background kind of control the forum. The Nikon one anyway. I recognized what was going on, but also had a couple of long time members PM me and point it out as well.

I was always turned off a little by their aggressive push to upgrade to a paid membership.
Yeah, me too (though I did contribute a few times). The thing that finished it for me was the combination of pay-to-view forums and aggressive controls over personal content -- I couldn't edit or remove links to my own work, which meant that if I stopped paying, I couldn't see any responses to things I'd posted.

That rubbed me the wrong way.

I was a member of photo.net back in the '90s, though I haven't visited in ages. I still use FredMiranda.com, and I think it's ultimately the best alternative. I generally prefer it to here anyway, though this site has been especially good for new releases.
I agree that I am not a huge fan of their “pay to win” policies…however, maybe that is the only way these forums can keep their doors open nowadays :(

I was a paying member for a few years at that site, but the traffic was so low I haven’t bothered upgrading for a while.

From a youtube comment below Chris & Jordan's latest video:

Never expected Pentax to last longer than DPReview TV..

;-)

Still, sad news. This website is so helpful...

Sad news!

Best wishes to all the dedicated photographers here who shared their insight and experience in a kind and respectful way. I will miss connecting with you here.

My thanks to the hardworking staff who served us here also, including Chris and Jordan, whose content I, for one, enjoyed a great deal.

Best wishes and hope to meet some of you in another place or internet space.

this is terrible. i didn't really need a lot of help with my nikon DSLRs, but jumping into the Z system raised a lot of questions that i felt required a robust and lively forum that i could lean on. i found that in DPR (and all of you fine contributors) and now i'm being evicted and have to find another home in some other roach-motel forum? no thanks! i saw the lack of content other places and picked this forum for a reason! :-(

i visit this board daily because i like reading about, talking about and using these cameras and lenses and will be hard-pressed to go cold turkey when this is all over. i hope we pick a new home quickly and propagate the messaging in time for all that want to continue reading/posting daily.

What is Nikon going to do without DPReview's truly helpful members answering difficult questions about Nikon's products? Often providing help by comparison settings and test images.

What is Nikon going to do without DPReview providing trusted (unbiased) professional reviews of Nikon's products? Nikon is most likely to suffer over other two biggies.

I've been on here since 2001 and wanted to say thank you to the owners and moderators. I've learned a lot here over the years and you will be sadly missed!

Now I will recommend Back Country Gallery and Fred Miranda two other excellent sources of Info!

Back Country Gallery (Steve Perry)

Fred Miranda

Good luck to all!
Hey, George. Expect I’ll you over there. 🙂
Been to both for quite a while now! ;-)

Very sad and a little strange.

I wonder what the mechanics are for shutting down such an established website? I can't imagine any metric where revisions wouldn't have made more sense than throwing out such a key resource.

Oh well.

The good news? Something will rise to take its place.

Thanks for all the comments recommending Nikonians and Back Country Gallery. I'm a long time moderator on Nikonians and moderate the Nikon Z camera and Z lens forums. I also host the Nikonians Webinar Series. I'm also a moderator on Steve Perry's BackCountry Gallery Forums.

Both sites have both free and paid levels of membership with premium access and features for higher levels.

You'll probably see a little more emphasis on polite discussion on both of those sites than we have at DPR. Both are trying to make interaction pleasant for everyone involved while still allowing free speech. BCG has a specific rule against Brand Bashing and Nikon has a similar approach.

If anyone has any questions, contact me directly.

What I find shocking is that Amazon apparently has no plan to try to sell the site (and site content) to any buyer or keep the content available (but static) which is probably an infinitesimally small cost to them.

This is such a slap in the face that I am seriously considering boycotting Amazon from now on.
I've been boycotting them for several years now. This just confirms that I was right in that.

The stuff for sale anymore is such cheap brandless garbage it's more work trying to troubleshoot it and later return it.
That's kind of silly. If you CHOOSE to buy brandless stuff without proper research, that's your choice. You can choose to buy branded stuff if you want or you can choose to do enough proper research to make sure you're buying a good product.

Amazon's site is not particularly curated. If you pay, you can sell your stuff there. There's good stuff there and bad stuff there, just like there is on eBay or Walmart.com.

On the other hand, you can buy a ton of well-known brands on Amazon too. That's really your choice.

Now, if really you're just venting because you're mad at Amazon for shutting down dpr, I'll have to agree with you on that one. Such a shame.

indeed, this is a very sad piece of news .. since there is no much for us to change the decision already made, all there is left is for me to say a BIG THANK YOU to the staff of this site as well as to everyone who has made contributions to this forum as well as to the others. I have learned a lot from many and will remember well the many takeaways from the chats and banters and back-and-forth here.

Again a big thank you to everyone as well my best wishes to all the photographers out there. May be we will meet again somewhere.

Regards and cheers. "escaping"
