Street MFT kit

I agree that the Panasonic 12-32 is the smallest and the quality is excellent. I couldn’t abide the lack of a manual focus ring as I use focus peaking a lot, so I opted for the Oly 14-42 EZ. Some say the Panny is sharper but I have two 14-42 and one is stellar and the other is just very good so sample variation may be the difference.
For "streetish" shooting no focus ring is a fatal shortcoming. 12-32 is nevertheless a sharp lens and until getting the 12-45 the one I'd pack for going minimalist.
I probably go to extremes, but I prefer the absolute smallest and lightest kit for street shooting. Getting the shot always counts more for me than ultimate image quality, so here is what I use:

https://live.staticflickr.com/5697/29968658970_cae5d6ebdb_b.jpg

Panasonic GM1, Panasonic 12-32mm, 35-100mm and 14mm lenses. Two spare batteries and charger.
Having used the GM1/5, I find the Sony RX100VI/VII (and Canon G5X mk2) noticeably better and lighter cameras especially if you value size and weight. Yes you can't change lenses, but their lenses are pretty good for most instances.

While the OM-1 shares the same sensor size as the smaller M4/3 cameras, it is relatively bigger for six reasons:
  1. More features require more room, and it has LOTS more features
  2. More processing power requires more space
  3. A much larger hand grip
  4. A much larger battery
  5. Weather sealing adds some weight
  6. Magnesium alloy body weighs more than plastic composite
In many ways the OM-1 exceeds the Sony a7rV in terms of features, weather sealing and build quality.

But M4/3 has something for everyone. If you want small, you can have small, you just won't get all the bells and whistles that come with a flagship camera.

I have an RX100 VII and it’s great.

Handling sucks though and I despise the power zoom.
I have added a nice metal grip and totally changed the whole handling experience. Love my RX100VI too!
I do love my RX100. But even using DXO noise magic, the little sensor still breaks down higher than iso 1600.

Also, my RX IQ is closest to my iPhone 14 Pro. I just sort of looks like iPhone images but with much better control over shutter/zoom. In fact, if it weren’t for the zoom/shutter speed, I would just use my phone.

That said, my iPhone takes good pictures, so I carry my RX everywhere.

You just can’t get great color depth and contrast from those tiny pixels

Actually, it’s the OM5. I hear it’s the same thing. $1500 with the lens. Overnighted.
Great choice. I have the OM-5 with the 12-45 and I love it. Beyo9nd the E-M10 IV you get PDAF focusing, Hand Held Hi Rez, weather sealing, in camera focus stacking and more.\

Have fun exploring the OM flavor......... I find it yummy.
I’m pretty excited about it and what I can see through exhaustive searching, the 12-45 renders exactly how I like. That’s more important than anything to me.

Now I need to find a longer zoom to go with it to use on occasion. Nothing fancy, just decent.

I didn’t have time to search, because the deadline to get the kit tomorrow was up in 45 seconds.

I’m also looking forward to the different aspect ratio of the images
The 40-150 f/4 Pro is the obvious companion. I can attest it is a least as good as the 12-45 and nice size. Here's an idea in keeping with my beer can theme from a few posts ago. It needs to be zoomed out just an inch or so to activate it, but then it's all internal zoom. On my OM-5 it is sharp from one end of the zoom range to the other and the rendering is the same as the12-45

I move fast once I get that feeling. Just watched a video of a funny Asian guy using the EM5 with the 12-45.

The images he took are exactly what I like.

So, I just ordered the EM5 (not the 10) from BH and it’ll be here tomorrow.

I really hate the idea of the side screen, but it seems like the 5 is really a step up in AF and some fun computation stuff.

If I don’t like it, it’ll go in the drawer with the Fuji gear I can’t stand.
Sounds like a great start……nice and positive

I just spent 1500 bucks. I feel like that’s pretty positive.

Im really looking forward to it and was thinking I could be out shooting right now in the drizzle if I had it already. I don’t have any other ACTUAL weather resistant gear.

Not being a street shooter, no post from me so far. That would however be the kit for me. I’d have bought a used EM5.3, which is on my maybe later list.

Enjoy your new kit. It has a lot of positives.

The 40-150/2.8 is also a tremendous lens and you can dismount the whole tripod ring to save nearly 80g, or leave it on as an attachment point for a shoulder strap.

I had the 40-150 2.8 for many years and it was a great lens. However, Upon reviewing the images from my use, two things stood out. First how little I actually used it in comparison to my PL100-400. And secondly, of the times I did use it, I almost never shot it at f/2.8. So..the f/2.8 version went on the block and the amount of money it garnered almost paid the entire freight for the much smaller and more useful (to me) f/4.

The f/4 is in my opinion an almost perfect match up with the OM-5, whereas the f/2.8 would fit better on the larger OM-1.

I think you made a very smart choice. While the EM5 is a bit bigger than the EM10, it is still a pretty small camera that can do a whole lot of things better, And it could be the perfect choice for a street shooter.

And I think you will love that lens too.
I really hate the idea of the side screen, but it seems like the 5 is really a step up in AF and some fun computation stuff
I hate the side screen too, but I suppose we will have to get used to it. Tilt screens are getting rare today because every manufacturer is pushing video specs, and the side screen seems to be prized by video shooters.
If I don’t like it, it’ll go in the drawer with the Fuji gear I can’t stand.
If you really don't want the Fuji gear you should sell it and use the cash for more M4/3 lenses. There are plenty of people who love that gear, and would be willing to buy it from you. To be completely honest, if M4/3 didn't exist, I'd probably be a Fuji X user.

I personally don’t understand the love affair with Fuji. Other than compact bodies and lenses, I don’t see a benefit and have two bodies and lots of lenses.

Throw out sharpness and I just don’t like the way Fuji files look. It always bothered me and then I finally quit. I tried different RAW converters and finally realized I just don’t like the images.

The X-Trans sensor does produce different looking images some love it. PL6 does t fulling support those files and most other programs had to create workarounds for it to work I’ll take my 20 mp Nikon files all day over the 26 or even 40 mp Fuji images

I’ll get around to selling off the gear after Christmas.

Makes perfect sense. I’d probably get a used PL 35-100/2.8 mk i to partner an EM5.3.

As you can see from my samples, mine gets used below f4 on an OM1.

Wonderful system for options, with some gaps, but well served from WA through normal to tele.

Yes they do lack in dynamic range and high iso noise but IQ is still very good
