american airlines flight 313, chicago to new york city

i'm really pleased you liked them! this is a fun thread;>

Andy, let me tell you, I really enjoyed your NY skyline photos. I
haven't tried it often, but it's not easy to get good shots through
an airplane window. Not only is the perspective and distortion a
problem, but usually my windows frost up so that nothing is clearly
visible. There are also scratches and bubbles in the plexiglass and
other imperfections. I just haven't gotten good ones.

I loved your few skyline shots.

well, it's as close to manual as you can get on a p10... i guess the actual name is program mode, it's on the dial with a camera icon and a "p" next to it. using this setting, one can set the focus distance, ev, white balance, iso, sharpness, saturation and contrast.

thanks for your kind words, i'm pleased that you enjoyed my photos.

ok so these aren't spectacular but here they are anyway. and yuri,
i hope you see these because i know how much you love nyc shots!

after a kabillion air miles flown, i have now taken my very first
pictures from an airplane! i took my little sony p10 on this trip
as i didn't have room & energy for my 717. it's a handy little
performer. the window shots were taken mostly with nightshot scene
mode. the city shots were full manual. there are a few more in
this gallery (the last thumbnail is a short movie clip of the
landing):

The biggest town Sarah has ever lived in is where we live right now - populaton 3200, and even so we live out of town in a less congested area lol. We will be right there in midtown in a few weeks on the college scouting trip! Gulp. Give me bears and snakes, give me avalanches and snow storms, raging rivers . . . falling trees - any day over that jungle! lol. Scares the heck outta me! Cindy
totally blown away by the vast amount of buildings in such a
relativly small area. I live in a state which has 500,000 people in
the entire state. Absolutely amazing the amount of people in NY.

Thanks for shareing

We will have a day and a half of free time. Our hotel is near the Empire State Buidling. What should we see in that amount of time? Also, just looking for survival tips for city life and local tips on NYC - and for that matter Vancouver, Boston, Providence, Baltimore, DC, and SF too! This is really foriegn for us. Although we have visited DC before so we know how to get around on the METRO.

Thanks, Cindy

since you are at the esb, then make sure you get in line to go to the top early in the morning...or late in the afternoon.

go to the frick museum http://www.frick.org one of the finest art collections in the city, and you can get architecture, fine art, paintings, sculpture, furnishings, and an indoor garden all in about 2hrs. it's at 70th street and fifth avenue, so go there after you visit

central park ('nuff said)

shopping up and down fifth and madison avenues in the 50s and 60s

downtown: trinity church, nyse, south street seaport, federal hall http://www.nps.gov/feha/ this is where geo washington was inaugurated and where the us first had it's capital

  • broadway, times square also.... go to tkts and get 1/2 price tickets to a bway show
much much more if you like any of these ideas i'm happy to elaborate!

Is that because of crowds?

That sounds great, I wouldn't have known about the Frick. 70th . . . sounds like a long way from where we are staying . . . would it be best to do a subway ride or taxi up there?

hey kudzu, thanks for the pics. to answer your question, i think 7million people do live in nyc.
Andy.
I was in chicago 3 weeks ago. I went to visit my sister that moved
there 2 months ago. I really loved Chicago (Im planning to go to
live there).
I wanted to take a picture of the airport subway station. I thinks
it´s really beautiful. Thanks for sharing it. I couldnt take any
picture, since we were in a hurry to catch the plane.
We went then to NY. A really big city. Reminds me of the
Microcentro, in Buenos Aires, were you can find lots of people,
lots of taxis, lots of buildings, lots of noise and that kind of
"urban" things. Although I think NY is a really beautiful place to
visit. I guess not many people actually live in NY. Most of them do
what you do. Live near NY, take a train and go to work there. Am I
wrong?
Anyway, Here are some pics I took.
Thanks again
CkZ

Hey!, this is me!

My mom

One taken from the plane. Not sure what this is

The last one. I took this one on the bus, so that´s why it´s a

Andy,

There is a reason people are asked to shut off digital equipment at landing - and its not because airline crew are born to be killjoys. its because of a plane crash a few years ago where external equipment interfered with the plane's electronics.

by being so cavalier and continuing inspite of explicit warnings seems to brook a total disregard for the well being of other passengers. although the pics are great, i'm glad you were not next to me when you were taking them - i would have clocked you - no matter how nice the photo opportunity...

just my perspective
Well, one thing is for sure. You're not a Canadian.

well it's pretty well known that these devices don't cause electrical malfunctions. the reasons they want them off is so that people aren't distracted with them during takeoff and landing. and so that gear/etc is stowed.

check it out.

gk - i hope you won't clock me, i'm really a nice guy ;>

this is from the us faa website http://www1.faa.gov/Passengers/electronics.cfm

i searched and searched but didn't find reference to a digital camera. they do restrict other devices.... and for good reasons.

The FCC and FAA ban cell phones for airborne use because its signals could interfere with critical aircraft instruments. Radios and televisions are also prohibited.

Laptops and other personal electronic devices (PEDs) such as hand-held computer games and tape or CD players are also restricted to use above 10,000 feet owing to concerns they could interfere with aircraft instrumentation

Andy

dont get me wrong- i think you take great pics and i am sure you're a really swell guy :).

it just seems really cavalier to me to ignore safety warnings that are being issued to everybody on board a commercial airliner - i mean it would be one thing if you were up there by yourself but its another to betting the lives of all the other people up there with you that your digital camera does not have effects similar to those produced by other electronic devices. i mean - whats the real difference - they are all combinations of processors and memory and displays (i know you turned yours off).

Would you really want that on your conscience if something did happen and you made it through...? just something to chew upon...

The issue of intereference is poorly understood. Today American Airllines lets passengers talk on their cell phone while the plane is taxing and just 2 years ago this was forbidden. In fact, most passengers don't remember to turn of their pagers, even though most are 2 way.

Today aircraft contain, TV displays, Direct TV Dishes, Air Telephones and Internet connectivity. Fronteir Airlines has a cool moving map display that is tied to the aircraft's GPS system; this system is never turned off. Everyone of these electronic systems generate as much interference as a digital camera, laptop computer or PDA.

Makes you wonder why they are not banned?
