Ricoh May withdraw or sell multiple businesses to increase profitability

Presumably, if everyone produced fewer camera bodies on average, profits would be greater.
Less model less sell less profit volume.

Normally, GAS make consumer buy more camera body although only minor different 😛
no. GAS is something for the stupid 1% of the customers who first hit the buy button and think only afterwards whether they need it really.

A brand can not live from these 1%.

As we have seen it now for the last 10 years. More models does NOT lead to more sales. Or how do you want to explain the drop of 120.000.000 units in 2012 to around 5.000.000 units in 2021?

That is not correct. The market of people wanting dedicated cameras is saturated if not becoming slower. Each brand producing five to ten different models means the brand has to spend a lot more money developing products for the same customer base.

Checking the DPREVIEW clientells, purchases, what cameras we buy, we want, there is no Pentax to be seen in any devision, GR3 is listed in the compact camera's in top 10 owned and wanted.

The MF of Pentax was already well known in the past, so you have a succesformula in GR3 ,

a few rugged IP rated compacts onl used by professionals in a decreasing market,

MF also professionals,

360 "things" you drown in on second hand market so nobody seems to hold on to thiese things.

I would; spent my research money on GR as cashcow, make money , create more research budget .

I f they want to continue with Pentax, make a FF fast and loose the APSC, which is too expensive for being an APSC...

Loose the 360,

loose the rugged types

Never call customers stupid. They save camera maker via their own money. They too kind.

  • Camera price increase over year, out of normal consumer budget. Camera maker no interest on high volume low profit margin entry level camera. Canon M50 (which top 5 selling over many year) discontinued.
  • Consumer found that new affordable phone (which less than $400) IQ better than P&S camera (which in same price range).
  • Used phone cheaper than used camera. Besides it, no need buy PC/Mac.
  • Less people become professional photographer since some consumer no money hire photographer. Less consumer print photo too.

The GR is a huge success, they sell much more of them than Ricoh expected.
Curious what this looks like in terms of actual units sold and the trend. Anyone?
Hi,

quote:

”One of the most important products of our group is the Ricoh GR, the ideal device for street photography. We launched the Ricoh GR III 6 months ago and we are enjoying an extraordinary success: compared to the sales we made with the GR II we have had an absolutely incredible jump, especially in Europe where we have multiplied our sales by 7 or 8. It’s therefore one of the pillars of the group today and one of the areas Ricoh are investing heavily in. In the future, many developments in the GR range are to be expected.

The date of that article is 2019. Much has occurred in those 3 plus years that may have altered outlook. As one indicator, CIPA data for Jan-Oct of 2019, that would have been known at the time of that interview, showed over 3 times as many fixed lens digital camera shipments worldwide (5.7 million units) as compared to same Jan-Oct span for 2022 shipments (1.7 million units). There is no breakdown by brand.

The topic and reference of this original post is likely a response to Ricoh business analysis of various divisions and Ricoh’s use of terms “low probability”, “unlikely”, and “low probability” in reference to meeting productivity criteria, marketability, and integration into their digital services model in the portion related to cameras.

I suppose that some here overestimate the costs of developing a new model.

Sony or another company might offer a new improved sensor, some improvements in AF might have occurred, a better battery or better power management might be available along with a slightly better but less expensive display…

Some cheap changes might prevent dust from reaching the sensor😎

Ready is the new model that might convince some new and many older customers to upgrade.
