Switch from Canon R5 to Leica SL2 - would you do it?

Have you tried to adjust the picture styles to see if you can get the look you prefer?

YouTube is not a reliable way to compare image quality. Also, any color differences you see could simply be due to the way the images were processed. If you shoot RAW you could probably get the same or nearly the same results from both cameras. When you look at photo comparisons online they are almost always out of camera JPEGs at the default settings. If Raw they are probably at the default settings.

I've spent too much time and lost too much money chasing my tail believing the marketing hype for 'new and improved.' If you want a Leica then by all means (including robbing a bank) go out and get one.

A lot of people here would sell a kidney for your Canon kit. I don't know enough about the Leica systems to get rid of what I now own.

Do they look at 13 x 19 pigment prints or a 1900 pixel wide monitor, or a feed into a 60 inch 4K television set, or a 1024 x 768 screen on a 15 inch notebook?

Hey guys!

A while since last. And I have a role to play regarding my username, that's to be continuing looking for upgrades in gear, while I should be looking for upgrades in skills.

Should I sell my Canon gear and get a Leica SL2?
Pshaw! You're not a true GAS aficionado if you're contemplating selling(!) a camera. Besides, if you know how many cameras you currently have, you're only a GAS wannabe anyway. Get busy acquiring gear if you want to be recognized as a GAS sufferer.

I think you're right and I'm leaning towards keeping the Canon r system. After all I'm happy with everything except size.
Well, size and handling are important, and they make the decision for some people. How do you think you can judge those by asking random people (us) on the Interwebs?
I just have a few friends that shoot the Leica sl2 and come from other mirrorless systems and say while the Leica af, buffer speed etc leaves a lot to desire, the image quality, the colors and microcontrast makes it all worth it.

Check out this comparison of the rf 50mm 1.2 vs the Leica summicron sl 50 1.4.

I feel like here the Leica looks better, stronger colors. But it's not by a mile.
Yes, and the differences are due to slight differences in exposure or default brightness set during development of the raw photo. I'd bet a kidney that the differences could be erased by a slight difference in the position of a single slider, or at most, two sliders. I didn't listen to the guy, but the comparisons appear to be the ramblings of another random idiot on the Interwebs. Microcontrast - schmicrocontrast. There's no useable evidence in the video, but if you ever find a difference, in all likelihood you can deal with it by small differences in sharpening parameters. By the way, the Leica lens shows vignetting that the Canon does not. You can see it in the shape of the out-of-focus highlights.
Far from it. And I love the fact that both the 50 and 85 has 1.2. I shoot wide open all the time and especially the 85 is just strangely sharp. Don't think I've ever seen the color of people's eyes stand out so markant from a distance where you have their whole length in the camera frame. And I've owned 10 85s as least 😂🙈
Well there you have it. If you feel inclined to burn money, then send me your Canon equipment.

Have you tried any other RAW tools. I used Lightroom since version 1 until June of 2021. I still have my Adobe subscription. I was unhappy with LR and the R5 and tried several tools and for my usage I licked DXO PL4 the best. I have since update two times to PL5 and now PL6. I know others like CaptureOne.

I am personally much happier with DXO PL for my RAW work.

Yes, I had a DXO lab trial a few years ago, thought it was alright, but maybe it's even better now?

As for Capture one, I've actually used that software quite a bit, but decided that paying for a license both for C1 and LR was too expensive. Cut C1 out since LR is more practical.

But tbh, I felt C1 gave me better results, espcially for my Fuji files.

Starting With PL4 and Deep Prime NR the program has become top-notch. With each version improvements and features are added.

Hey guys!

A while since last. And I have a role to play regarding my username, that's to be continuing looking for upgrades in gear, while I should be looking for upgrades in skills.

I actually like my current setup which consists of:

- Canon R5

- Canon RF 85 1.2-

- Canon RF 50 1.2

- Canon RF 70-200 2.8

- Canon RF 24-105 4

- Canon RF 35 1.8

My backup camera is a Leica Q which I bought used recently.

And the image quality in this Leica, and the rendering got me thinking.

Should I sell my Canon gear and get a Leica SL2?

these days I'm mostly into colors and microcontrast.

I know i wouldn't get the same lens lineup as Leica is expensive, but I might for example be able to switch it with a kit consisting of:

- Leica SL2

- Leica 24-90

- Leica 50 1.4

What do you guys think? Worth it? Or would the image quality difference be too small? Gotta say I love those RF lenses and R5 body too...
To my mind, it makes no sense whatsoever. But these things aren't all about sense. I have a theory that photographers produce better photos when they use gear that they are really happy with. And that happiness is a completely personal thing. You might like things for reasons that seem strange to me, but the reverse is exactly true. So I would say, if you have the urge to do it, and you can afford it, why not? You'll get a good price for your Canon kit, and if you feel good with it, you'll likely take good photos.
I know nothing about Leica. But I just have to say this; Every time I hear someone speak about "getting a certain amount of money, to fund a whole new purchase" I immediately think, "Ha ! Maybe they could ! But not me" ! Never in my life have I been able to sell anything, for even a small fraction of what I thought it was worth... or heck, for that matter, even what others agreed it was worth ! I swear if I had $10K worth of equipment, I'd have a hard time selling it for $3K :(

So, when I think about how much I'd like to own a Nikon Z9 > mostly just so I could also own a PF 800mm F6.3, I NEVER think, well I could get X $ for my R5, and maybe I could get X $'s for my 16-35, and my 24-70.... Ha ! A life time of negative used selling experience has taught me, if I have something nice, I should probably just keep it. So when I start thinking about that Nikon Z9 and PF 800 F6.3, I think, Hmmmm, I wonder how I could scrape up an extra $12K ? I could always keep my R5 for a backup, and landscapes...

Maybe it would be different for the OP.

The things you mention are included in DXO photolab 6? Maybe I should give it a go. I don't have a lot of problems with noise in my images though. Only an issue if I'm printing large and shot over ISO 1600 ish

No you're kind of right, well you know best yourself regarding your own experiences. But for me it goes both ways. Fujifilm for example is highly sought after in the used market IMO. Let's take the Fuji X100v for example, they are out of stock everywhere and used cameras are more expensive, but the same goes for my X-T30 which I got a decent amount for after 2 years of use.

100% yes I would. That's how one actually learns. Actual experience, actual hands on, shooting your own actual photos and processing your way with different lenses. Get what you like seeing for sure!

There's a more immediate option you should consider as well. Get some of the older Zeiss ZE lenses for your R5 and be shocked and awed by the unmistakable German IQ.

Yeah, that's the way it goes, isn't it? Besides, when I'm done with something, it's so old that no one wants it. But sell something that's so new it's just a little bit outdated? Preposterous.
