Has Photoshop been affected by a Win10 upgrade?

Has anyone using Photoshop experienced loss of functionality lately?

I'm running an old copy of Photoshop 7 on Win10. It worked fine the last time I used it, probably about 3 months or so ago.

Yesterday I tried to use the levels adjustment but it's not working properly:
  1. Layer > New adjustment layer > Levels
  2. The small preliminary "New layer" window pops up (the one that gives a chance to rename the layer and asks whether to group with previous layer). I click OK.
  3. The new adjustment layer window does not pop up.
  4. The new adjustment layer entry appears in the layer palette.
  5. Everything freezes in Photoshop.
  6. Press "Escape".
  7. The new adjustment layer entry in item-4 above disappears.
  8. Photoshop is operational again.
The same thing happens when I try to use other "New adjustment layer" operations.

The same thing happens when I try to use "Image > Adjustments > Levels" or other image adjustment operations.

Image size and printing works normally.

I plan to remove and reinstall PS7 but before I do that, just wanted to know if other folks using CS2 or any non cloud version of Photoshop are having functionality problems. I'm wondering whether a Win10 update is the cause.

Thanks,
Sky

SUCCESS !

I tried Win95 compatibility mode but it said it could not run it.

Then I tried Win98 compatibility mode and now PS7 adjustment layers are working normally again.

BUT there is a catch. The last thing I did yesterday was to delete the Photoshop settings that are retained even when PS is removed. The settings that are carried over to a new install of PS. So though I believe that using Win98 compatibility mode was the fix, if that doesn't work for someone, delete the PS settings in the "AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Photoshop ......." path.

Thanks!
UPDATE:

I had saved my previous PS7 settings in another folder before I deleted the PS7 settings.

So just now I replaced the new PS7 settings with my old PS7 settings...
Absolutely double check me on this, but I think PS 7 was from the era when Photoshop required Java for certain portions of the application. If you did indeed have something change on you that caused your present symptoms, then perhaps it’s Java related and not Windows.

Photoshop 7's twenty years old.

I'm surprised it still works at all.

Regardless of the age of Photoshop 7, the question is:

Not me but realistically, you must realise that you're comparing chalk with cheese . . .

CS6 is fine, CS5 is fine, CS4 is fine and PS6 (pre 7) is fine. Have you been using compatibility mode for the exe?

Just curious:

Have you tested all those personally, or is this a compilation from multiple sources?

2002: that's when XP was Windows. Vista came out in 2007.

I have all of them installed and running on various Win 10 machines (forgot to mention CS3, it's fine too). I have used them all since the last Win update except PS6. I can test it tomorrow.

I'm typing this on my #2 desktop at the moment...

Thanks for the confirmation for your four versions of PS not having any problems.

I've been using PS7 with Win10 fine up to about 3 weeks ago. I just installed PS7 normally when I started using Win10 and don't recall having to use compatibility mode. PS7 was working fine up to 3 weeks or so ago. All of a sudden, yesterday, PS7 is not working properly.

I'll remove PS7 and reinstall it and see what happens.
Thanks.

Good heavens!

I may be mistaken, but that seems highly unusual.

Helpful to the OP, though.

  • The small preliminary "New layer" window pops up (the one that gives a chance to rename the layer and asks whether to group with previous layer). I click OK.
  • The new adjustment layer window does not pop up.
Tip: When a window that you expect fails to appear, sometimes it's because it popped up behind another window. Try moving the foreground window to one side to see if there's anything behind it.

It is unusual but they all have their place. CS6 is my workhorse, CS5 I use mostly for the Pixel Bender plugin and CS4 is on the computer my wife normally uses. CS3—good ol' CS3—is actually very important in that it's the only version of PS on my main work machine that runs all my legacy plugins correctly. Finally, I keep PS6 around for the novelty of it and the fact that it's portable (will run from a flash drive on a computer with no installation needed).

Good tip. I've also seen a window launched that was almost entirely off screen and thus easy to miss. And then there's the reset prefs trick which Sky might try before a reinstall. Back up those prefs first though in case the reset doesn't fix the problem. That way the old prefs can be restored and various customizations won't be lost.

UPDATE: I just tested PS6 and ran into a similar issue with an adjustment layer freezing the program to the point where I had to use Task Manager to end it. I changed the Compatibility Mode from Win 98 to Win 95 and that took care of it. In my case, PS6 is the only version that requires the use of CM with the minor exception of CS3 which gets it on an ad hoc basis for one old plugin.

UPDATE 2: FWIW, PS6 via the flash drive still runs fine with CM set to Win 98. I guess the takeaway is to try both of those modes to see if one might provide a fix.

Yes, the first thing I did was move palettes and the main window for the jpg image around, to see if the new adjustment layer window was behind. Nope. And no trace of that window anywhere.

Good thought, thanks.

Tip for offscreen windows - if you click on the window icon on the taskbar (the strip of icons of open windows that's normally at the bottom of the screen) then the window becomes activated. With the window activated you can hit "Alt+Spacebar" to open the window menu (the menu you get when you click on the icon at the left end of the window's title bar) and then press "M" on the keyboard to put the window into "Move" mode. At that point you can use the arrow keys to move the window back onto the screen, even if the window itself is invisible because it's completely offscreen.

Thanks for testing and confirming a similar issue. So your PS6 was working normally all this time but just now it had the similar issue. I assume that PC is running Windows 10.

Some update (Win10 or something else) must have changed something that can affect non cloud versions of Photoshop.

FWIW, I removed PS7 and reinstalled it. I did have to use the "troubleshoot compatibility" option and it chose WinXP, version3. But still had the exact same adjustment layer freezing problem. I'll try the Win95 compatibility mode and see what happens.

Thanks for your valuable update!
