One of my weakest points in SP is to turn a complex scene into a great photo (I'm better at isolating a few elements).

Here's a thread for those of you who can distil meaning and order in a chaotic jumble. Let's see those photos!

(I'm not going to define what "complex /layered" means, or indeed whether they mean the same thing, even in this context. Feel free to make up your own definition and post the photos that fit it).

Good thread idea, Cedric. I love complex/layered shots and I think they're one of the hardest but most interesting to get. To me they can have rhythm and can often have little individual but simultaneous stories going on with people in their own worlds. They can be in a line from left to right or layered in the sense of foreground, middle and back which Alex Webb was amazing at capturing. I looked through your website and you have some very nice photos. I particularly like your concentration shot with two very contrasting things. A chess match on one side of a wall and a loving couple on the other.

Hey Cedric, great idea for a thread! I don't think I've ever really thought much about what a photo having 'layers' means, so the set below may or may not stand up to anyone's definition. I have several images that are purposely cluttered but the ones I selected are more about multiple elements that relate to one another, IOW rather than one definitive subject surrounded by filler, the subject really is a 'connection of the dots' across the entire frame, some stand out immediately, some don't; well and some just don't relate much at all but the absurdity makes me laugh :)

Cheers!

This thread doesn't seem to be attracting much input at the moment so I have added another one....Sri Lanka. I like (amongst other things) the blue balloon top left and the blue bag at the bottom of the image........oh and the yellow in the middle :-)

Paul, thanks for kicking off with a photo in this thread.

The figures here seem caught in a sort of dance and I like the asymmetry - two moving right, one moving left, one standing still. Good colours, too.

I've seen this before (or perhaps another in this series) and commented that I really liked it. This is exactly what I'm talking about (well, at least one of the things I'm talking about) - lots of things going on but somehow they're in sync rather than just a jumble.

Thanks also for the comments on my site! (I really need to update it a bit).

Wow ant, a beautiful image. Ghostly, almost. I always wish you'd post more of your images, I think this is the third one I see in several years, and it's another that I really enjoy.

Nice one Sam. A window on NYC. Shame we can't see what's being read on the Kindle :-)

Not sure I would have the bottle to photograph on a bus though, there is no where to go (apart from the destination!

Nice shot Sam. I'm like Paul, don't really have the bottle to shoot on public transport and I use the underground trains a lot so there's always opportunities. I photographed a woman once on the train and she noticed me. Another passenger also noticed me and went over to talk to her and they both looked at me. She obviously had told her I had my camera pointed towards her. At the next stop the one I photographed got off the train, walked past where the doors were open opposite me, she then stopped and took a photo of me with her phone. I was worried she was going to report me. I was wearing a mask at the time which was no doubt to my advantage. Nothing happened but it's made me wary of taking photos in an enclosed space like that.

Lee, I’ve been shooting on buses (and at bus stops) for many years and published a book about it. Developed techniques for doing it, never had issues. You can see a preview here:
