This is my first post here but I have been a voyeur for a couple of weeks while I was deciding on a camera and where to buy it. First a little background on myself. I am a Computer Engineer who is a gadget freak. I spend roughly $10,000 annually on computer and consumer electronic related purchases, the majority of which are done on-line. I only mention this to establish that I have had a fair bit of experience in dealing with on-line vendors. That said, BuyDig has been the absolute worst e-tailer that I have dealt with so far. My experience with them is hopefully a been a unique one, but I think that it should be posted since a forum search on buydig yielded positive or non-committal discussions with peoples experiences.

Here has been my week in a nutshell:

Sunday night - Decided on a CoolPix 995. After looking at pricewatch, yahoo shopping, and bizrate, buydig had an excellent price on the camera. I looked through the forums here, and some had posted that they had bought their camera from them and that it was the US model. I decided that they were an acceptable risk (tsk...tsk).

Monday morning - Called buydig to verify that the camera was the US version (a clause on their website specifies that all products are US unless otherwise noted). Felt comfortable with them, even though they had huge shipping charges (I don't mind companies making money, I just figure it into the actual cost of the item -- and buydig still had most beat) and their shipping policy stated that they needed 48 hours to process orders. I bit the bullet and placed my order. I received an email immediately stating that the order had processed and showed the camera "In Stock".

Monday evening - I got an email that stated that they were going to need additional information to process my credit card. They wanted my to e-mail a photocopy of my CC and drivers license. I called them pronto, ready to explain how many ways that this was the most ludicrous suggestion that I had ever heard, and I was told not to e-mail anything, but that they had experienced some "problems" with their systems (which I guess is the PC way to say we were either hacked or exploited). I should have canceled my order right then....

Tuesday -- Rainbows and lollipops. In other words, I didn't have to deal with buydig.

Wednesday -- After not-so-patiently waiting for an e-mail alert for shipment, or any other discernable signs of life from buydig, I decided to give them a little jingle. When I finally got through to a customer service rep (managed to get hung up on twice -- shoulda canceled then), I was told that the camera would ship Monday, and do so overnight. I informed him that I had a order form that showed the camera 'I' had purchased was in stock and that I was curious as to whom they sent 'my' camera. I was told that their inventory tracking was not capable of doing "real-time" tracking, and that they didn't have any on hand. After informing him that most monkeys could write a Perl or VB script that decremented a variable when an item was purchased, I was off to look at my options. This proved to be a big mistake as, stop me if you've heard this before, I should have canceled my order right then. I set off to find a dealer to order from. I finally decided to use Provantage ( http://www.provantage.com ), who is one of the VERY best hardware dealers I have found on the net. They were about $50 over buydig's price after shipping, but I decided it was worth the money ... the aneurysm that buydig was giving me was going to run waayyyyyy more that that. I decided to cancel my order and called buydig back only to find out that they had closed their offices at 2:30 and would be out until Monday ... for the holidays. WHO ON EARTH CLOSES ON EARLY ON WEDNESDAY FOR EASTER?!?!?!? I am contacting my CC company tomorrow to ensure that the order does NOT get charged to me and canceling the order via email. This company is a joke.

Now I know that there are those amongst you who will say that I got exactly what I deserved for using an online vendor, but most e-tailers (at least in the computer HW realm) seem to know how to run a business. These people do not. I hope my experience with them has been unique, but if they will deal with one customer, I would venture to say that they do it quite often. For those who have dealt with these people in the past and had a good experience, count yourselves lucky. For those who are considering using them, be warned.

If there is a bright spot, the only thing that they have done right so far is to not charge my CC.

My experience with Buydig.com was much better, but I didn't go through humans. I took a chance and ordered directly through the Web with no human interaction. Surprisingly my order went through perfectly. I had an email confirmation within 24 hours and they shipped my camera and sent me the FedEx tracking number by Email within 48. They promised 7 to 10 days to receive my camera but I got it within 4!. They shipped the camera from New Jersey to LA in 4 days for $19 total shipping and handling. $19 seemed pretty reasonable compared to others listed on Pricescan.com

As you might guess, I am very happy with my camera..and it is indeed the US model.

I think your mistake was going through a human being. I might call and ask all the questions, then hang up and place the order through the web. I trust the computers more than some 2 bit sales clerk.

I had a distinctly different experience through Cameratopia. I ordered online..a day later they called to confirm at 6am west coast time. I guess calling from New York they didn't think much about time differences. Upon confirming my order they notified me that shipping and handling would cost $60! When I ordered the camera through the web and submitted my credit card they did not include the extra $30 handling charge! Also, despite the fact their website said the camera was in stock, the salesman told me it was backordered. I asked why the web site said different and he informed me they only update their database once a day in the afternoon...huh!? Needless to say I cancelled my order.

I did order via the web. I had just called to ask a few questions before I ordered.

I am glad that your order went off without a hitch. I wish mine had. Like I stated earlier, I hope this isn't their M.O., but I felt that my experience with them needed to be relayed.

My buying experience with Buydig.com (WorldWide Direct) was very positive. I ordered via live human and not online. They are not the lowest priced but are at the lower priced end of the spectrum. I received my products in one business day which did cost a shipping premium. Yes, they sent a USA warrantied model, e-mailed me upon shipping and provided tracking info. Perhaps I was lucky. It was flawless for me. It is interesting to note that Buydig has many strong endorsements posted on their web site. I did however have a similar negative experience as you did with PCMall. I guess it's all just like being dealt a poker hand and rolling the dice.

Area,

Out of curiosity, did the salesman try to push any accesories? Usually the accessories are high priced. I went through a walk in store called Beach Camera, I remember reading somewhere that Buydig and this place were possibley linked. Don't know.

The salesman I got was polite but very short once he knew I wasn't biting on any of the accessories. I read some other reviews that once these lower priced companies realize that you aren't biting, suddenly your order becomes a back order and delayed.

Welcome to the Nikon forum, Area. I hope you enjoy your camera when it does finally arrive.

Just a cultural note: BuyDig is probably not closing early for Easter. They are probably closing on time for Passover, which started at sundown yesterday. Some other reputable NY firms (B&H Photo is one) also shut down for the 8 days of Passover, so this by itself isn't an indication of flakieness. I haven't delt with BuyDig, and probably won't after hearing your experience, but on this one detail they have good company.

.....

Just a point of information - They aren't closed for Easter - They're closed for Passover. Like a lot of the discount photography and computer stores in the Metro NY area, the business is run by people who abide by some very strong tenants of their faith.

My officemate and I are both waiting for shipments of the cp995 from Buydig. Looks like we won't get to take any Easter pix!

Whenever you go to the current low priced vendors on the major price guides, it should come as no surprise if they blow through their inventory. I've bought from buydig before and gotten exactly what was promised in a reasonable amount of time. I guess I have as much faith in them as I have for any other vendor on the web. Is there a site out there that NEVER screws up an order or mis-handles a customer service inquiry?

BM.

I'm sitting here with my, less that 24hr old CP995 I ordered from BuyDig. I never talked to a human, just did the entire transaction via the internet. My computer talked to their computer and everyone got along fine. I received exactly what I ordered at the correct price. They will continue to get my business as long as their good service continues. I love not having to talk to a NY (area) salesperson!

Compared to many horror stories about buying online, yours doesn't come across as very impressive. Certainly asking for a photocopy of your information was crazy, but the rest just shows you're an impatient sort. I don't see a lot there to worry me. People do get time off, phone systems do cause difficulty, inventory is way more complicated than Perl.

Talked to my bank, and everything is A.O.K. with them. No harm, no foul.

To answer some of the questions:

No, I wasn't pushed towards accessories.

It didn't dawn on me until much later (but before reading these posts :P) that they had closed for passover, which is respectable.

My point is that the whole process seemed disjoint. There was never any feed back to the consumer. No e-mail letting me know that the camera was on back order, No phone call to let me (or some more niave customers) not to send in the photocopies. It was always me pulling teeth to find out what was going wrong. And as for the inventory being a complicated beast.....hey....thats their beast to tame. There are ready made tools to handle that sort of thing. I am glad that so many of you have had positive experiences with them, I did not. I just wanted to relay my story to those who needed some feedback. I may be impatient, as Steve pointed out.....but usually when others have not held up their end of the bargain. Was it the end of the world? No, not even close. It was just not the way I believe business should be conducted.

Buydig.com and Beach Camera are the same store. Buydig.com is the mailorder side and Beach Camera is the in store side. I found this out when I tried to return my refurbished 990. I drove from md. to jersey to personally take it back because they are open such strange hours. I wound up with a new 995 out of the deal. It worked to my advantage because they were going to send me a refurbished 995. I explained to them that the 995 new was actually cheaper than the refurbished 990. yes they tried hard to push some cheap quality lenses. no offense intended but they are open such strange hours because they are a version of jewish that we dont have in md. No business closes it's doors on friday afternoon and stays closed until sunday. Yeah I know all about the sabboth but by the same token there is also thou shall not lie and thou shall not steal. When you try to sell me things I dont need at inflated prices and you charge inflated shipping , why be hypocritical and hide behind this talk about closing early on friday because it's the sabbeth.

Well,

I ordered a CP995 2 weeks ago from these folks. I received my camera within 3 days and was totally satisfied....They seemed on the level and did not try too hard to push accessories.

Best regards and good luck,

BTW, I am really happy with the camera....Good quality.

I used buydig.com to order my 5000. Very low price, US model, and no hassles. I did the get call for accessories, though. When I heard the price they wanted for extra batteries, I made a loud "HAH!" sound and he said, "what was that for?" I told him I could get the batteries for less than half his price. I had everything else since I own a 990 and when I told him that he sounded depressed. But, the camera was here 3 days later. I would buy from them again.

I just bought a CP995 from Gateway. Ordered it Monday about 4:00 MST. They shipped it Tuesday after noon. Cost with free shipping and no tax was $525 Thursday after noon checked with UPS tracking and camera will be delivered to my house friday morning. Now do a rebate with AX.
This is my first post here but I have been a voyeur for a couple of
weeks while I was deciding on a camera and where to buy it. First
a little background on myself. I am a Computer Engineer who is a
gadget freak. I spend roughly $10,000 annually on computer and
consumer electronic related purchases, the majority of which are
done on-line. I only mention this to establish that I have had a
fair bit of experience in dealing with on-line vendors. That said,
BuyDig has been the absolute worst e-tailer that I have dealt with
so far. My experience with them is hopefully a been a unique one,
but I think that it should be posted since a forum search on buydig
yielded positive or non-committal discussions with peoples
experiences.

Here has been my week in a nutshell:

Sunday night - Decided on a CoolPix 995. After looking at
pricewatch, yahoo shopping, and bizrate, buydig had an excellent
price on the camera. I looked through the forums here, and some
had posted that they had bought their camera from them and that it
was the US model. I decided that they were an acceptable risk
(tsk...tsk).

Monday morning - Called buydig to verify that the camera was the US
version (a clause on their website specifies that all products are
US unless otherwise noted). Felt comfortable with them, even
though they had huge shipping charges (I don't mind companies
making money, I just figure it into the actual cost of the item --
and buydig still had most beat) and their shipping policy stated
that they needed 48 hours to process orders. I bit the bullet and
placed my order. I received an email immediately stating that the
order had processed and showed the camera "In Stock".

Monday evening - I got an email that stated that they were going to
need additional information to process my credit card. They wanted
my to e-mail a photocopy of my CC and drivers license. I called
them pronto, ready to explain how many ways that this was the most
ludicrous suggestion that I had ever heard, and I was told not to
e-mail anything, but that they had experienced some "problems" with
their systems (which I guess is the PC way to say we were either
hacked or exploited). I should have canceled my order right
then....

Tuesday -- Rainbows and lollipops. In other words, I didn't have
to deal with buydig.

Wednesday -- After not-so-patiently waiting for an e-mail alert for
shipment, or any other discernable signs of life from buydig, I
decided to give them a little jingle. When I finally got through
to a customer service rep (managed to get hung up on twice --
shoulda canceled then), I was told that the camera would ship
Monday, and do so overnight. I informed him that I had a order
form that showed the camera 'I' had purchased was in stock and that
I was curious as to whom they sent 'my' camera. I was told that
their inventory tracking was not capable of doing "real-time"
tracking, and that they didn't have any on hand. After informing
him that most monkeys could write a Perl or VB script that
decremented a variable when an item was purchased, I was off to
look at my options. This proved to be a big mistake as, stop me if
you've heard this before, I should have canceled my order right
then. I set off to find a dealer to order from. I finally decided
to use Provantage ( http://www.provantage.com ), who is one of the
VERY best hardware dealers I have found on the net. They were
about $50 over buydig's price after shipping, but I decided it was
worth the money ... the aneurysm that buydig was giving me was
going to run waayyyyyy more that that. I decided to cancel my
order and called buydig back only to find out that they had closed
their offices at 2:30 and would be out until Monday ... for the
holidays. WHO ON EARTH CLOSES ON EARLY ON WEDNESDAY FOR
EASTER?!?!?!? I am contacting my CC company tomorrow to ensure
that the order does NOT get charged to me and canceling the order
via email. This company is a joke.

Now I know that there are those amongst you who will say that I got
exactly what I deserved for using an online vendor, but most
e-tailers (at least in the computer HW realm) seem to know how to
run a business. These people do not. I hope my experience with
them has been unique, but if they will deal with one customer, I
would venture to say that they do it quite often. For those who
have dealt with these people in the past and had a good experience,
count yourselves lucky. For those who are considering using them,
be warned.

If there is a bright spot, the only thing that they have done right
so far is to not charge my CC.

It's good for those of us who think of the "good old days" lol. I used to buy extensively from both Provantage and Buy Dig lol. I bought cameras and computer monitors from them.

I think the last time I bought from them was back in 2011. Buy Dig Fuji HS20 camera for $400.

I bought an 18" 1280x1024 LCD monitor from Provantage back in 2001 when they cost $600 lol.

Oh and for the person who asked 20 years ago-- YES Buy Dig and Beach Camera are one and the same and are located one state to my west in NJ.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
