Cards that can do 8k60p

I gave this a test today, I put the camera on a tripod in the California Sun, the parts of the camera in direct sunlight were up to 107F, the back of the camera in the 80-90F range. Then I filled the card, 11m40 at 8K/60/Fine. Flawless writing until the card filled.

The camera and lens got no hotter, clearly the heat from the video recording was no match for the sunlight, and recording for 11 minutes made no significant difference anywhere at all compared to just sitting out in the sun.

I popped the memory card out, and very briefly it measured 130F, but cooled quickly.

Thanks for testing this. My 2TB Angelbird mkii will get her tomorrow so I’ll see how it likes recording for over an hour of 8k60. Torture test them before the return windows expires!

How did it go? I need a 2TB card, and Delkin Black's don't go any larger than 650GB.

So I tested this a bit this morning. The 2TB AV pro mk2 will happily record 77mins of 8k60 in the normal setting without issue. I could only get it to record 11 minutes on the “high quality” 8k60 setting before it stopped. There was still plenty of space on the card and no temp warnings. I tried it several times and 10-11 mins seemed to be the limit. Very strange.

I’m still on the original card firmware as you need an Angelbird brand card reader to update it (which I was not particularly happy about). The card reader should be here in the next couple of days so I’ll re-test to see if I can fill the card with high quality 8k60 on the new firmware.

This is all academic for me as I plan on using the normal setting for 8k60 anyway. The file sizes are already insane and I doubt there is much difference in appearance between the two RAW settings.

Please do write back when you've updated the firmware. This is exactly the kind of nasty random abrupt failure to record problem that I'm all too familiar with on my Angelbird CFast2 card on my Blackmagic.

I also find no visible difference between 8K/60/Normal and High, so I concur with you that I'll also be using the Normal mode too. However, the fact that it fails in high is concerning, as if it's temperature based, and you happened to be shooting in the daylight on a baking hot day, perhaps it might fail in normal mode too.

What kind of environment were you in when you tested the Normal for 77 minutes?

Thanks so much!

Roland.

I hadn't tried a torture test, until today .. on the high setting NRaw 8k60 Nlog I filled a 2TB Mk2 card with firmware 2.14. 43minutes or so I then pretty much straight away filled a second card with SDR. Camera was warm as were the cards when I pulled them, but easily handholdable. With the new firmware even the 512gb SE can fill up (11 minutes) and previously it wouldn't work at all on 8k60. This left me with 2 bars of battery.

One of the primary reasons I considered the Z9 instead of the Sony A1 is because of the relatively affordable CFexpress Type-B cards. AngelBird is investing heavily in these bleeding-edge technologies, and my hats off to them for standing behind it by giving an extended 3-year warranty. I do understand we need to give AngelBird a reasonable time for them to sort out the challenges associated with Z9 2.0 firmware (especially 8K60P).

I can only comment based on my Angelbird AV PRO MK2 CFexpress Type-B 1TB Memory Card (six of them), which I returned. I will buy it again as soon as AgelBird addresses those issues. I understand this may be revolutionary (or evolutionary) technology, and wondering if any of you like-minded hobbyists are interested in CO-investing in these cards, which we can timeshare. (I use it only once in a blue moon, and at that time, I may need around a couple of hour-long recording space (which costs more than Z9). As technology evolves, we technology enthusiasts can collectively invest in similar bleeding edge technologies without getting stuck with too much bleeding.

I, too, experienced frequent interruptions in the middle of my short (max couple of minutes 8K60P) videos. Since it was a passion project and I didn’t need to worry too much about pleasing a paid client, it was not a big deal for me.

They made me buy the card reader too☹

But I am not sure the firmware update is out yet for MK2. Based on the email from AngelBird support on 5-14-22: “The Firmware 2.13 is the latest so far, the 2.14 is going to be released in few days, we are just finalizing some last tests.”

I returned the cards since I didn’t want to take the risk of 6TB Guinea Pig. Again, I truly appreciate AngelBird releasing their latest & greatest bleeding-edge cards that are relatively affordable. I will buy it again once they sort out the issues.

Dear Vince,

>>As I said 2.14 is out and I have installed it onto my cards:<<

I am relieved to hear AngelBird updated the MK2 too and I hope there will not be any more lingering issues so that I can go and repurchase 2TB this time. I waited for the response from AngelBird a couple of weeks about a month ago (I was told the person was on COVID quarantine).

>>it works even on the lower spec 512gb SE cards which I wasn't expecting.<<

For 512GB SE& 160GB SX, they release AVX2.12 and AVX1.30 versions over two months ago and I updated both 511GB SE & 160GB SE on 3/15/2022 (I did not see any further updates as of a couple of weeks ago).

I just did another torture test with the 2.14 firmware and it seems to have fixed everything. I filled the card twice with 8k60 in the high quality setting without any heat warning or stopping. It’s cloudy day in NYC so this was just inside, but I haven’t experienced heat issues with this card yet.
I’m pretty sure the previous failures were because of write speed issues (because stopping without warning was what a few people reported with other, slower cards). Maybe buffer issues or something because 11 mins is a strange amount of time to run before failing? It appears that this has been addressed with the new firmware. The normal quality seems to be about 60% the data rate of high quality so I’m perfectly confident using that for production work and not stressing about the card giving up.

I can’t recall updating the firmware of a memory card before so good on Angelbird for improving their products over time (even if they do force you to buy a $90 card reader).
