Just got my S22 Ultra and have been playing with the RAW app, and wow, its really good and available for all 4 lenses, and the jpeg it produces simultaneously are direct from the RAW file so no over processing, very natural looking output indeed, especially compared to the output from the stock camera app. Well done Samsung!

Can you share samples from all lenses?
will do so over the next few days, will take same scene with stock camera with all lenses and will then take the same scene with all lenses using the RAW app.

Please share some samples. I've tried take photos using RAW Expert, but i had different feeling about quality. JPGs looks very bad for me and RAW files was strange - i couldn't get good results using this RAWs - maybe problem was RAW Expert, which is not good enhough for modern RAW files, who knos. Normal RAW files was much better, but only 12 megapixel - no acces to full resolution.

yip after playing around I agree, the RAWs look good on the screen but when looking closer the fact that Samsung has dialed back the over-processing in the stock app a lot over the last year or so means that the differences are not as big as I thought.

And the RAWs look a bit smoothed from RAW expert, actually getting more texture from stock app. So yes a bit disappointed actually in RAW expert but am more impressed with the stock app SOOC photos which are the best I've seen from a Samsung.

Sorry all, false alarm about the 'wow' from the RAW expert app, but am happy that stock app is pretty decent, especially the 10x tele lense, wow, so much better than I was expecting. I will post some examples soon.

Can You share some samples from stock camera? Last time Samsung released camera update and i would like to see what changed until i had my unit? I had very first firmware few days after premiere, JPGs SOOC disappointed me :( It was Exynos, i heard this SOC is not good like Snapdragon.

yip its weird, in some instances there is an obvious difference (like in lower light) the RAW expert jpg is way better than stock see below (main lens). RAW expert jpg at left, stock app at right 100% crop. Think as soon as the iso climbs the heavy processing kicks in. Will try the same outside and compare.

But in daylight the differences are less obvious, with the stock app doing very well. jpeg from RAW expert at left, stock SOOC in middle and RAW at right. Again main lens, 100% crop.

another instance where the stock app looks really good over the RAW expert, even the foliage rendering from the stock app is really restrained and natural looking, the RAW expert jpg has a horrid yellow cast (in the RAW fil to).

SOOC stock on left, RAW expert on right, main lens 100% crop

Just to compare, here's the 10x using stock app (left) and the jpeg from Expert RAW app, notable difference in this case with the Expert RAW jpg looking more natural, but again for 100% crop at 10x I'm impressed with the IQ. Now if Samsung could just remove the yellow color cast in Expert RAW shots...

Please post the same crop from both - IMO there are some areas which are better with OOC (lost tonality - depth of greens and yellows - seems to be oversaturated bit) .

And post pls the sample from main lens as this is (detail wise) mediocre to judge - at best. AFAIK - from what I have seen so far- expert RAW is excellent with colors and DR but not with details - maybe I am wrong.

I've posted a few pix here https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66197234 so you can pixel peep at will ;-)

Long story, short :
  • JPEGs from ExpertRAW are so oversharpened that they are unuseable and hurt eyes. They really suck and should be avoided at all cost !
  • DNGs from stock app are not very good and difficult to handle in PP
  • JPEGs from stock app are very sharpened but not so agressively as those from ExpertRAW. There are however occasions where the heavy processing fails miserably with ugly artifacts.
  • DNGs from ExpertRAW are quite oversharpened to my taste but they look quite good in my opinion.
I think that the stock JPEG and the ExpertRAW DNG files are the best, hands down. As sharpening goes, up to your taste.

But of course, when it comes to DR, DNGs from ExpertRAW are in totally another league and dominate head and shoulders.

So overall, I thing that the best option id to capture DNGs with ExpertRAW and process them.

The 10x lens is definitely fun and the results are pretty decent, here's one of a bird using the 10x lens from about 5m (15ft odd) away, slightly cropped, not bad at all imho.

yip absolutely Vlad, if they could sort out the bit of 'smoothing' going on in the RAW expert .dng files it would be great, cos as you say DR and colors are great.
